Work Text:

Twilight never really knew what peace and comfort meant before.

Maybe when he was still a kid, back when there was still innocence running through his veins...maybe he knew back then. But when the war took everything from him, when he decided to abandon his identity for a new one, he forgot how it felt. There was no room for his peace and comfort because every second matters as a spy. His job is to make sure that no one would experience the same chaos he had experienced. He had to sacrifice everything he has for world peace. For the comfort of many. His purpose, he realized, was to be a tool for people's happiness. No, his happiness didn't matter, because it'll be too selfish of him. The people he's trying to protect, the country he's fighting so hard for, and the agency he is working for, have to come first before his needs.

So when Anya and Yor came into his life, he didn't know what to do.

With Anya, he kind of expected that he'll get attached. The little girl isn't hard to love. She was everything Twilight wished to be back when he was still a kid. Full of life, full of love, full of innocence, and trust in the world. She had so much trust; in him, in Yor, in the world she was living in. She's a kid. Still so young. Still has so much to learn. But still, Twilight would rather have Anya be full of life than end up like him. That's why he was working so hard for world peace. Because no child like her should experience what they had experienced.

With Yor...that was unexpected.

They weren't lovers, to begin with. They were two strangers who managed to co-exist. And then they slowly became friends...partners...parents to Anya. But that was it. They got married for convenience. He needed a wife for his mission, she needed a husband to prevent people from getting suspicious. The marriage was for their benefit. There was no love there...before...attraction, maybe. But they didn't love each other the way normal married people should.

But she...she slowly crept into his heart. She was like a warm blanket covering him in the middle of the cold night. She was like a warm cup of tea. She was full of love, passion, of kindness, and he didn't think such a woman exists but she was real and she was with him.

Was.

"Papa, Anya's gonna be late for school."

Twilight's thoughts were interrupted when he felt Anya tugging his pants. He shook his head as he helped her put on her backpack.

"Do you have everything?" he asked. Anya nodded before turning around to kiss Bond.

It had been a month since Yor left. And if he was devastated, Anya was much worse.

She woke up, screaming and crying as soon as she realized that her Mama was gone. She threw her stuffed toys at him, sobbing as she repeatedly called for Yor. He couldn't even remember how he explained to her that her Mama won't be coming home, that she left them, because he too, was so lost. He didn't realize how much he depended on Yor until she left. And Anya...even after a month, she was still too angry at him. And he couldn't blame her.

Because he was angry at himself too.

Gone was the kid who was all smiles as soon as she enters their home. Gone was the kid who blabbers too much about how her day went. Gone was the kid who was full of life and love. Because the woman who gave her those things was gone.

When Yor left, the Forger household was filled with nothing but darkness and sadness.

And for the first time since the war took everything away from him, he didn't know what to do.

After making sure that Anya rode the bus to Eden safely, he went back to their apartment. He inhaled deeply as soon as he closed the door and his heart broke all over again when he noticed how he couldn't smell Yor anymore. There was no trace of her left. Well, she really didn't have anything when she moved in with them, but the lack of her presence screams so loud that he swears he could still see her in every corner of the room.

He was about to enter his room to go and change but stopped in front of Yor's old room.

He didn't have the heart to go inside. Didn't have the courage to touch the doorknob and twist it. Didn't have the strength to peek inside and see how empty it is.

But he misses her. So much.

And so he took a deep breath and twisted the doorknob open, and just as he expected...

The room looked like no one stayed there. No trace of her, not even her scent. He balled his fist. This was stupid. He didn't stop her from leaving, didn't do anything when she cried, didn't even explain himself properly, didn't even ask her questions he should've asked her. He needed to move on. The world needs him to move on to do his job properly. And Anya, God, Anya needs him, even if Anya is making him feel like she doesn't need him anymore.

He was about to close the door when he noticed something gleaming on top of Yor's table. He walked towards it and he inhaled sharply.

He slowly reached for the grenade pin that he stupidly gave her as an engagement ring before and it felt cold in his palm.

And for the first time in a very long time, he found himself crying.

Thorn Princess lurked in the shadows, waiting for the perfect time to attack. She was itching to finish this task and just go back to her apartment and lay on her bed. But there are still civilians around her target and she didn't want to hurt them, let alone, be seen by them and so she stayed in the corner, holding her golden stiletto tightly in her hand. When she finally saw the perfect opportunity to attack, she took a step forward and was about to run towards her target when someone beat her to it.

Her eyes widened when her target suddenly collapsed on the floor, a bullet buried deep in his skull.

She turned to her left and her breath hitched when she saw the man she loved the most.

Twilight was breathing heavily, his green suit covered in blood which she assumed isn't his, and his gun tight in his hand. He was looking straight into her eyes and it took a lot of energy to not collapse in front of him.

No, no, no, he wasn't supposed to see me here.

Did they happen to have the same target? Or did he look for her and followed her here?

It must be the former.

Because if he didn't stop her from leaving before, why would he go look for her? It won't make any sense.

She blinked twice before straightening her shoulders.

"Agent Twilight," she said, almost like a whisper.

"Thorn Princess," he said, his voice breaking (or was she just imagining it?).

"You killed my target," she stared at him, waiting for something...anything...but he just stood there, his eyes never leaving her face, as if he was memorizing every contour of it, but she doesn't want him to just stare at her, she wants him to do something.

"So I did."

She didn't say anything after that. She just stood there, not even moving an inch towards him even though she wants nothing but to run in his arms and never let go again.

But she was too tired. Too tired of fighting for them alone. Too tired of being the only one in love. Too tired of giving and giving and giving.

A minute passed. Then it became two. Then it became too long that Yor was once again heartbroken and disappointed.

She tore her eyes away from him before putting her weapon back into the holster on her leg. She could feel his eyes on hers as she walked past him and for a moment, she felt his warmth against her skin, and she thought that this was probably it, maybe he would start fighting for her, for them.

But he let her go.

Yor cracked her knuckles.

"You're so stupid, Agent Twilight," she couldn't help but mutter under her breath.

He didn't say anything and that was enough indication for Yor.

She walked away without saying anything after that.

And once again, Twilight let the woman he loves the most leave.
