Humans are Space Orcs

Summary:

Just my small addition to the "humans are space orcs" trope on Reddit and Tumblr. This is the first thing I've ever written, so please be nice.

Chapter Text

Our human crew member has been acting rather strange for the past 20 cycles or so, retreating to her quarters as soon as the work was done, keeping to herself, much unlike her usual energetic self, and it's beginning to worry me. Humans are a decidedly emotional species in my experience, and their emotional state affects their health as much as their physical. As captain with a responsibility to my crew's wellbeing, I took interest in the problem but was promptly told to "kindly fuck off" and "let her bitch for a minute". This strange behavior wasn't affecting her ability to complete any maintenance tasks that presented themselves, so I obliged.

Yesterday we got notice of an indefinite station in a very remote quadrant in which the only significant race was the humans. I begrudged the prospect of spending hundreds of cycles so cut off from every other significant life form, but, like the good soldier I am, accepted. Surprisingly, Tessa, our human, recovered rather well from her slump at hearing the news. I'd think that such a social creature would share my sentiments, but, alas, I've long since ceased trying to understand humans and their ways. Sensing it was safe to breach the topic again, I asked her what brought about this sudden change in mood.

"Oh, it's nothing really. Just the idea of being so close to home, having the possibility of seeing my family soon. It makes me happy," she explained with an expression I have come to know as embarrassment. How could I have been so stupid? I know well enough by now that humans have a strange tendency to get emotionally attached to the things they find familiar. She doesn't seem to be in the mood to talk, so I leave it at that, making a mental note to request an extended supply stop on Earth.
