“You like Regulus right?” Lily ask’s out of nowhere. James and her were sitting quietly together in front of the fire in the Gryffindor common room, alone as everyone else went up to bed or to the Ravenclaw party. Lily had been doing homework and James was planning a prank on Sirius, when Lily abruptly asked a question James never expected.
“What?” James wipe’s his head over to look at Lily in shock, eyes growing wide and cheeks warming in embarrassment. Lily looks at with an eyebrow raised, body turned towards him, and homework away.
“It’s a simple question.” Lily sounds so unbothered like she didn’t just ask if he liked his best friend's brother.
“Why do you ask?” James inquired, why the hell would she care.
“I like him.”
Fucking what
”What do you mean?” Lily doesn’t like like people so she has to mean platonically right?
”I like Regulus,” She says it slowly like he’s dumb - which yeah maybe he is but come on this is weird. “And I don't want to step on your toes.”
“You Like like Regulus.”
“Yes, James.”
”And you don’t want to hurt me?”
“yes.”
James burst out a surprised laugh, of course the girl he like likes has to like like the boy he like likes. Lily look taken aback by his laugh clearly misinterpreting what he’s laughing at.
“What, you think he wouldn’t want me?” Lily's voice is tight and rising to a pitch that hurts his ears.
Fuck she’s mad.
“Listen Lily you are an amazing person truly but,” Lily’s eyes narrow as he speaks, hand twitching towards her wand. “I don’t think you're his type.”
“Really.”
Regulus gets nothing when she kills me.
“Kinda.”
“Well you're wrong.” Lily turns back into her previous position ignoring the look of disbelief on James face.
“Just like that.”
”Yup.”
“Well then I just have to win his heart before you.” Looks back over to James eyeing his determined face.
“Is that a challenge?”
”If you want it to be.” James is starting to wonder if he really is stupid.
“I’ll win.” She states before going back to her homework.
“Then it’s on.” He went to planning his prank
