Work Text:
There’s always something surreal about the ending of an adventure. Sonic just always feels at ease with the world, like he manages to complete the impossible. Freeing the knights and returning them to their worlds matches with the feeling of defeating Arthur and Merlina, two moments that he doubts he’ll never forget.
The struggle of fighting King Arthur and the heartbreak of fighting Merlina.
Sonic stands on a hill overlooking the castle and the surrounding town.
Everyone is putting things back together; houses need repairs and the townspeople need healing, plus more. The Knights are working hard at helping and patching things up. Sonic tried to help out but the Knights kept pushing him away; almost like they are scared to let him near them again.
He can understand that since he did defeat (kill) their former King with the conclusion of their Sorceress soon after. Not to mention he abandon them once before. Then the whole thing with King Claudin and Eggman.
Sonic wouldn’t want him around either.
Meaning that they don’t need him anymore…
The World of Camelot is at peace again and Sonic doubts anything else could upset it. Plus the Knights are here and would refuse to let anything bad happen all over again.
Suddenly, Sonic looks down at his hand and sees that it’s suddenly see-through. He’s glad that Sonic was the only one to appear in Camelot when the fighting was over (though he wonders what Merlina, Nimue, and Morgan did with that spell).
He hid it behind his back when Lancelot came skating up to his side.
“I’ve been told to come to tell you that lunch is ready.” Lancelot had - at some point - removed his helmet, allowing Sonic to see the very Shadow-like face underneath. All the knights had removed their helmets during clean-up, making Sonic very homesick all of a sudden. “But I see that you aren’t staying.”
Sonic pull his hand out but that doesn’t matter since his feet are disappearing now. “I’m sorry. I really wanted to stick around and help out, be the King that everyone needs right now but…” His time in this world is over and it’s clear that Sonic has no say in the matter. “Just make sure that everyone is taken care of…” Sonic laughs softly and sadly. “I grew attached.”
Lancelot scoffs, even though there is a layer of sadness in his eyes; “don’t worry so much. Just focus on yourself.”
Sonic gives a bow (surprising Lancelot one last time) and he tried to focus on the knight but everything suddenly became dark and -
…
His living room is the same as the day the Knights arrived in his world. Sonic sits up and wincing when he heard something crash to the ground. He looks over and gently picks the book up; setting it on the coffee while swinging his feet back onto the floor.
His hand never once leaves the book not until he heard the front door slam shut and Tails come walking in with the sound of rain and thunder outside.
“Evening!” Tails said as he shakes his umbrella out. “That must have been one good book.”
The book in question in the Arthurian Legends and Sonic smiles sadly at it.
“Yeah, it was actually.” He takes a second to look at the bookshelf - having to move a couple of other books to make room. He has just the spot in mind for it, right next to Arabian Nights. “Anyways, what do you want for dinner?”
“Doesn’t matter, just as long as I get to help!”
“Sure, buddy.” Sonic ruffles Tails’s bangs as his brother walks past to get to the kitchen. “Just give me a second.”
Sonic got up from the couch and takes the book to the shelf. He stops when he notices that the cover is different. Each of the knights is present - even Galahad and Lamorak since they came official knights - along with himself holding Caliburn in the middle.
Sonic breaths out before sliding the book into place; finally being able to leave Camelot behind.
A strange feeling wash over him but it's one Sonic knows by heart.
It’s not a goodbye…
Just a ‘see you later’.
