Dealing With a Doctor

Summary:

Madara knows how to do his job.

He'd just prefer if it didn't involve doctors.

Notes:

Part of Prompts for Pride 2023, this story was written for Dawen who requested humorous fluff and coming out via puns.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Madara turns the prescription in his hands around, squinting at it from every angle.

No matter how he looks at it, it still doesn't make any sense.

He's pretty sure that's 'D/C', but is that AZT or AST? And if it is AZT does that mean this patient is currently taking zidovudine? Or azathioprine?

"I could scan this thing in upside down and nobody would be able to tell the difference," he waves the paper at the doctor on the other side of his pharmacy counter. "Why can you never write straight?!"

"I can't write straight because I'm not," Hashirama grins at him, showing the same mischief that Madara's seen every day since he accepted this job. "It seems to be a terminal condition."

"Fuck off," Madara yanks his keyboard over. "Your himbo gay ass will never seduce me. Now spell!"

"Z-I-D-O-V-U-D-I-N-E," Hashirama reels off the letters without hesitation and Madara types the order in, making sure to get the dosage right. "And she's being discharged."

"See, you can be competent when you want to be." Madara points out as he turns away to find the medication he needs. "Why you persist in pretending to be an idiot, I don't know."

"It's an excuse to come down here and pester you!" Hashirama yells after his retreating back. "Can't blame a man for trying!"

Madara groans at the way everyone in the pharmacy - many of them patients - turn to stare at them, and he can feel his ears flushing.

Still, he can't deny that Hashirama's persistence is... nice.

Flattering.

Ah fuck, he's in such trouble.

"Here," he yanks the label out of the printer and slaps it on the box before shoving the whole lot into Hashirama's waiting hands. "Now go away and leave me alone to work."

"Okay, but that means I can still bother you after you finish your shift right?" The doctor bounds away with all the energy of a golden retriever puppy, not waiting for an answer before he slides between the glass doors, and Madara sighs with exasperation.

He'll have to figure out what to do about that at some point, but Hashirama is a problem for another day.

"Next!" He turns towards the waiting queue instead.

Right now, there are sick people who need him more.

Notes:

The medications mentioned are real, as are the potential mistakes Madara is wary of making. It's also why Hashirama came down to make sure Madara dispensed the right ones.

Zidovudine was the primary form of prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission between 1994 to 1999, the time during which this story takes place.

On a completely different note, I set up a server on Discord for my writing and you can go poke me there.

Since I actually write directly onto the server, all the warnings for my stories apply to any content that may be found on there and I swear. Just FYI.

I'm also on Tumblr!
