Warmth

Summary:

Scott isn't thrilled when Coach assigns Isaac to be his roommate for the annual team camping trip, but finds that it isn't so bad after all.

Work Text:

Scott swore at the freezing gust of wind as he stepped off the school bus behind Stiles. Leave it to Coach to pick the coldest weekend in Beacon Hills History for the lacrosse team’s outdoor team-building camping trip. At least he would be back home by the end of the weekend.

Coach took attendance as the rest of the team gathered around him. As he announced that he would be assigning them the roommate pairings for the weekend, Scott instinctively moved closer to Stiles.

Unfortunately for him, Coach noticed and shook his head. “The purpose of this is to bond with a teammate that you don’t know as well, McCall.” He cleared his throat and announced, “Stiles, you will be rooming with Danny.” Danny opened his mouth to protest, but Scott noticed that Stiles didn’t seem completely against the pairing.

Coach ignored the reactions and continued announcing the pairings. “Greenberg, you’ll be rooming with Jackson. Scott, you’ll be rooming with Isaac.” Scott stopped listening to Coach as he turned over to Isaac, who was smirking at him.

Scott glanced back at Coach but knew he would get nowhere if he tried arguing. Isaac was new to Beacon Hills High and Scott didn’t know what to make of him. At times, Isaac seemed cocky and eternally armed with a snappy comeback of sorts. Other times, there was some kind of vulnerability to him that Scott didn’t understand. They had barely talked, and Scott didn’t know if he liked Isaac that much. One thing was for certain, he would definitely find out for sure this weekend.

Coach concluded announcing the pairings and gave them the rules of the weekend before sending them off to their cabins. Isaac approached Scott but they barely spoke as they walked towards their cabin together.

Once they arrived, Scott threw his duffel bag on one of the beds while Isaac threw his bag on the other. Scott looked up to see Isaac looking at him, but not saying anything. “What?”

Isaac looked away, still remaining silent. Scott shrugged at Isaac’s weirdness and walked out of the cabin to join the rest of the team for the start of their mandatory team-building exercises. Scott found Stiles sitting on one of the logs and sat beside him. Coach led the team through several drills and trust-building exercises.

Scott noticed Isaac watching him out of the corner of his eye, and Scott was still confused about him. He decided to just ignore it as the day went on. After all, he needed to focus on what Coach was making them do.

After dinner and an evening campfire, the team dispersed and returned to their respective cabins. Scott shivered as he moved further away from the campfire, the cold air nipping at his face. He returned to his cabin and got ready for bed. Scott slipped into his bed without saying anything to Isaac. Unfortunately, he was dismayed that the flimsy blankets that were provided to them weren’t enough to keep him warm.

Scott felt his teeth chatter as he shivered under the covers, unable to fall asleep. About an hour later, he heard movement from Isaac’s side of the room. He turned over to see Isaac walking toward his bed and was shocked when Isaac ordered him to move over. “What?”

“I can’t sleep,” Isaac snapped, “I can hear you shivering from across the room.” Scott was stunned by the request but moved over to accommodate Isaac. After all, Isaac’s body warmth was far more welcome compared to the flimsy blankets failing to keep him warm.

Isaac lay next to him and Scott looked over at his face as he relished in the warmth. Looking up close and personal, Scott realized he had never noticed how handsome Isaac looked or how tempting it was to run his fingers through Isaac’s hair. “Thank you,” Scott said appreciatively, trying to ignore how fast his heart was beating.

Shrugging, Isaac replied, “Can’t have you be a popsicle this weekend, now can we?” He added a wry smile, but Scott noticed the sincerity in Isaac’s eyes that undercut his attempt to be nonchalant about the whole thing. Scott laughed softly and fell asleep soon after.

The next morning, Scott awoke to find Isaac’s arms around the middle of his body. To his surprise, he found himself hesitant to leave Isaac’s embrace. As he looked down at Isaac’s sleeping form, he was surprised that he was tempted to lean down and kiss him.

It wasn’t until the door banged open that Scott shifted his focus from Isaac as he awoke with a start. Scott could see Stiles gaping at the two of them and Isaac quickly removed his arms from him. Scott quickly stood up despite lamenting the loss of contact and asked, “Is everything okay?”

“Coach is looking for you,” Stiles said, still looking between the two of them with amusement.

Scott forced himself to get up, changing out of his pajamas and into his clothes for the day. Once he and Isaac were ready, they followed Stiles to the mess hall for breakfast. Scott apologized to Coach for their lateness and took his usual seat next to Stiles. Isaac took a seat across the room, but Scott blushed as he felt Isaac’s eyes on him.

“What was that with Isaac?” Stiles blurted out, glancing over at Isaac with bewilderment.

Scott shrugged, attempting to play it cool. “We were trying to stay warm.”

Stiles raised his eyebrow in a disbelieving way. “That’s it?” Scott opened his mouth to reply, but hesitated. He found that he couldn’t deny how good it felt to lay in Isaac’s arms and remembered his temptation to kiss Isaac that morning. “That’s what I thought,” Stiles smirked, and Scott looked down to avoid his eyes.

Scott didn’t answer, the realization that he actually liked Isaac finally hit him. He hadn’t thought about anyone like that since Allison. “What do I do?” Scott asked, turning to glance at Isaac, who was deep in conversation with Boyd across the room.

“It’s up to you.” Stiles shrugged. “For the record, I think he likes you too.”

Scott glanced over at Isaac, who caught his eye and gave him a small smile. Scott couldn’t help but smile, a small blush forming on his cheeks.

He could barely focus on the activities Coach made them do all day, as his mind was back in his and Isaac’s cabin. Once it was time for bed, Scott practically ran back to the cabin and changed into his pajamas. Isaac came in not long after, clearing his throat awkwardly. “It’s not as cold tonight,” Isaac commented.

Scott nodded in agreement, feeling slightly crestfallen. He climbed into his bed and pulled the flimsy sheets over his body. He tried to fall asleep, but his mind kept traveling over to the bed across the cabin.

After an hour, Scott had finally had enough. He threw the sheets off and made his way across the room. Isaac was still awake, surprised yet looking slightly thrilled to see him. “Mind if I join you?” Scott said. “I’m still cold.”

Isaac looked surprised but nodded with a small grin gracing his lips. Scott climbed into his bed and Isaac looked pointedly up at the ceiling. “I really enjoyed last night,” Scott confessed softly. Isaac looked up at him in surprise, and Scott looked back, struggling to work up his courage.

To both of their surprise, Isaac acted first, leaning in to capture Scott’s lips. Scott eagerly kissed back. After a couple of moments, they lay back on the bed, neither of them daring to say anything. “Are you free next Friday?” Scott was the one to finally break the silence.

Isaac hesitated before nodding. Scott racked his brain for an idea before asking, “Want to check out the new laser tag arena?”

“I’d like that,” Isaac said, his smile bigger than any Scott had ever seen from him.

Scott grinned, mentally fist pumping in elation, and said, “It’s a date.” Isaac’s beaming smile was the last thing he saw as he drifted into another comfortable sleep in his arms.
