Work Text:

Tubbo shifted his feet nervously.

He had been waiting in this empty room for a few minutes now and it was not helping with his nerves, and it was also way too hot.

He cursed himself for deciding that a puffy jacket should be part of his hero attire but he couldn’t take it off because he didn’t know when he would be called out. He adjusted his gas mask and wiped his sweaty palms on his baggy jeans, he unconsciously reached to his head but paused as he remembered he was using his hybrid cloaking.

There was a large mirror in his room and he stared at himself, not knowing how to feel. He looked cool and presentable but he was still nervous that his costume was worse than all the others. He ran his hands through his hair to smooth it down, it was being stubborn and was sticking in every direction.

He was so focused on taking care of his hair that he jumped when he heard a robotic voice.

“Can all hero trainees please step out.” The voice blared from a seemingly hidden speaker.

Tubbo attempted one last time to smooth his hair down but it failed and stayed all messed up. He took a deep breath and opened the door, pausing a moment before stepping out.

He stood in front of the door and looked to his right, there were 3 other boys lined up next to him.

The one closest to him was freakishly tall and was wearing a black suit with a black and white split face mask, their hair was also split, one side white and the other side brown, his hair was so puffy that it mostly covered his eyes.

The person beside the tall guy was only a bit taller then Tubbo and was wearing a red sweater with varied shades, his entire face was scrambled up so you could see any of his features except for the curls of golden hair peeking out from under his hood, even though he couldn’t see his face, Tubbo had the impression that the guy was grinning.

The last guy was a bit taller than Split and was wearing a full gold jacket-sweater thing, it had accents of light blue and there was a shark mask over his face, he had brown hair and bright green eyes.

Someone in front of him cleared their throat and he whipped his head around, he had been so busy looking at the other trainees that he had forgotten that there was a hero in the room as well.

He faced forwards with his best posture but almost fell over when he saw which hero it was. It was Obsidian, the #3 hero.

Obsidian was so cool, he had the power to manipulate the earth and create stuff like tunnels and caverns, he was also an amazing builder and mechanic. He could build almost anything!

Obsidian was wearing his regular hero attire. A obsidian chestplate with a black creeper mask covering most of his face, his curly green hair covered part of the mask because of how long it was.

“Hello trainees and welcome to the hero program.” Obsidian started “I can see that we are missing Imitation but we will start regardless of that.” He started pacing in front of the trainees.

“Today we will simply introduce ourselves to eachother and we might even get to talk to the other hero’s. We will start by stating our hero name and power, any takers?” He paused in his pacing and looked around, when no one looked anxious to go he let out a low chuckle. “Alright then, why don’t I start. As you guys must know my name is Obsidian and my power is to manipulate earth.”

The boy in the red stepped forward and loudly introduced himself, “Hey! My names Chaos and I have the power to show people what they fear the most.” Anyone could feel the positive vibes that Chaos was giving off, he seemed like a very enthusiastic person.

The guy at the end stepped forward, his green eyes flickering around. “The names Ojal and I have X-ray vision.” He looked around at everyone and the corners of his eyes crinkled to indicate he was smiling.

Tubbo decided it was time for him to stop being a baby so he stepped forwards and tried to make himself look taller, “My names T-Nuclear and I have the power to create explosions.”

Chaos tilted his head at Tubbo. “Cant anyone make explosions if they have the right equipment?” He snorts, “doesn’t sound very fuckin special to me.”

Tubbo frowned at Chaos and replied “yeah they can, but I don’t need equipment..” to support his statement his hands started to glow orange, what normally happened when he’s about to blow something up.

Obsidian notices his hands glowing and rushed forward. “Okay no need to blow anything up! Especially not the hero tower.” He sighed and face palmed. “They’ll never let me do this again..” he muttered before regaining his composure and gesturing to the guy who hadn’t introduced himself, “why don’t you introduce yourself now?” He suggested tiredly.

The last guy closed his eyes for a second before opening them and speaking in a quiet voice, “My name is Split and my power is to steal other peoples powers, temporarily of course.” He stared at everyone blankly and kept their voice even.

Tubbo unconsciously pulled his hands closer to him, as if that would protect himself from the other powers. To be honest he was most scared of Splits powers.. sure Chaos is able to show people their worst fear but in theory Split could do that too if he took Chaos’s power, Split could take the strongest power and take over the world with it, even if it is only temporary.

Obsidian smiled and clapped his hands, “alright, now that we are all introduced let me tell you the rules of being a hero. First of all, you can never tell anyone your secret identity.” He stopped and let that sink it, “others knowing your identity puts you and the other hero’s at risk so you can not reveal yourself or you are kicked out of the hero’s. Second, you must always listen to what the higher in commands say. They will do what’s best for you and for your learning experience, the higher ups have been doing this for a long time and know what they are doing. And finally third, do not destroy anything on tower property unless it’s something you’re supposed to do or it’s absolutely necessary.” He paused and looked at each person in the room, “is that understood?”

Tubbo nodded and out of the corner of his eye he could see the others nodding too, though Chaos’s seemed a bit forced.

Obsidian turned and gestured for them to follow him out of the room. “We will now be giving you a tour of the tower, and if we happen to run across any hero’s I’m sure they would be happy to meet you.” He started walked down the hallway and to the elevator, he pressed the button to open it and they barely had to wait anytime before the doors opened.

They all walked into the elevator, which surprisingly held all of them comfortably, and Obsidian pressed on a button that Tubbo couldn’t quite see.

The elevator started moving upwards and he jolted a bit, accidentally running into Split.

He muttered a quick apology and squished himself into a corner, his heart beating wildly. He was about to get a tour of the hero tower. By Obsidian, mostly his favourite hero.

They got to the floor and Chaos stepped out first followed by Obsidian and then the rest of them. Obsidian gestured for them to follow and walked towards the middle of the room.

The whole floor was open and set up to be a gym, with punching bags and treadmills and all that other equipment. He stared at Obsidian as the hero started talking.

“Here we have the hero training floors, now you guys will not be allowed to train here unless invited by a hero or until you become a full hero. You will be training on the lower or higher public training floors. There is where all trainees and security go to train, I will explain which floors are the training ones later.”

Split raised his hand.

“Yes Split?” Obsidian asked and nodded at the trainee.

Split cleared his throat before stuttering “If we’re not allowed on this floor, then why are we here?” He straightened the suit he was wearing and overall just looked really nervous and slightly uncomfortable.

Obsidian laughed and pointed at Split. “good question.” He responded, “you are allowed up here because I have invited you on to this floor, because you guys need to learn the rules and where everythin-“

He was cut off by somebody yelling across the room, “Hey S- Obsidian. Are these the newbies?”

Tubbo whipped his head around to see Singe walking across the floor towards them, his eyes widened and he shook his head to clear it. Okay so now they were in the presence of 2 very powerful and awesome hero’s, this was officially the best day ever.

“Woah. okay now Obsidian you’re cool, but fucking Singe? Sorry but imma have to give it to him” Chaos’s distorted voice was loud in their silent room and it shook Tubbo out of his shock. He grinned under his mask and turned towards Chaos.

“Huh, I don’t know. I think that Obsidians better.” He threw at him, the confidence in his voice shocking him.

Chaos turned to him and the mask made him look so strange, blond hair peeking over a warped face without features. I mean none of them could see each others features thanks to the masked but it was a bit creepier than that.

Chaos crossed his arms, his voice held a challenge. “You wanna bet?”

Tubbo glanced at the hero’s who looked mildly amused by this and his grin grew bigger, “oh I wanna bet alright.” He tried to stand up taller to match the other boys height but lost that battle, how were all the others so tall?

His thoughts were interrupted by a chuckled from Singe, he saw Singe turn to Obsidian and grin. “They want us to duke it out, how you feel about that?”

Obsidian adjusted his mask and stared at the excited trainees before sighing, “let’s do it..”

Chaos pumped his fist and gave a loud whoop in triumph, Tubbo was also really excited to see the hero’s fight each other.

The two hero’s walked over to the mat nearest to them and prepared themself. By that it means Singe stood on the mat and practiced his punches while Obsidian shrugged off his armour and he could see the visible parts of his eyes close. Holy shit they had actually gotten the hero’s to fight, on their first day too!

Apparently both hero’s were ready and they stood opposite each other on the mat, Obsidian paused and looked at Tubbo. “Are we allowed to use our powers?” He asked while staring at Chaos and Tubbo. The two boys exchanged, well the best look you can do when one’s face is distorted and the others is almost fully covered by a mask and long bangs, they nodded at the exact same time.

Singe smirked and flexed his hands, summoning fire immediately. Obsidian sighed again and stared at the floor intently for a moment. Tubbo wondered what he was doing before a couple large stones flew through the window and hovered in front Obsidian. Tubbo gaped at the semi large hole in the window in shock, what did the window ever do?

The fight began with a bang. Quite literally as Singe blasted Obsidian with flame and he blocked it with one of the rocks, that in turn flew away from him and hit his armour. Tubbo could barely keep up with the fight. Fire and rocks were being thrown everywhere and Singe and Obsidian were moving so fucking fast, he was so excited to learn this in the hero program.

Next to him Chaos was yelling and cheering for Singe so Tubbo decided to start cheering for Obsidian even louder.

“Oi, Nuclear, shut it.” Chaos yelled, his voice and mask crackling.

“Never!” Tubbo screamed and continued to cheer for Obsidian as loud as he could.

The two other boys stayed back and he could see them occasionally exchange amused glances, they were watching the fight with interest. Tubbo could barely think through all the noise and heat but.. he kinda liked it this way, maybe this was the right choice.

The fight went on and eventually Obsidian was able to get a good hit in to knock Singe off balance and to blast a rock at him, the rock slammed into him with a bit of force and shoved him to the ground where he wheezed. Obsidian laughed and doubled over, he had a few minor burns and scratches but it didn’t look like he was in to much pain. Obsidian staggered over to Singe and offered him his hand. Singe grabbed it and immediately pulled as hard as he could, Obsidian came toppling to the ground on top of Singe.

Chaos was roaring with laughter and rolling on the ground at this, the two that stayed back were openly laughing but not too much, Tubbo was laughing so hard he was almost crying. His eyes were blurry from the happy tears and he just couldn’t catch his breath, all he could hear was lot of laughter and some screaming coming from the hero’s.

Obsidian and Singe both eventually got up and Singe limped off to the elevator, he waved to them as the doors closed and then he was gone. They were left with Obsidian again.

Obsidian laughed and walked towards the elevator before doubling back to grab his armour.

Chaos and the golden dude that he forgot he name of were chatting about something but he couldn’t hear what they were saying.

Tubbo took this chance to try to observe everyone closer. He focused on Split because he seemed a bit more laid and shy, the split mask cover the bottom half of his face and gloves cover his hands so he could see the skin. He could see some skin above the mask and it seemed kind of.. mottled. There were patches of park and light skin all mixed together, he had never seen someone with that skin before but it looked cool. Also Splits height, the dude was like 2 feet taller than him, how is that possible? The only dude he new that was taller is his roommate, Ranboo.

Ranboo is actually a enderman hybrid so he’s like 8 feet tall and it’s fucking crazy.

This guy is definitely shorter then Ranboo but still so freakishly talk that he must be some kind of hybrid. Tubbo decided that he’s gonna talk to him, he should try and learn something about someone.

He sidled up next to Split and awkwardly said “Hey, how you doing?”, he closed his eyes for a second and cursed himself for how anti social that sounded.

Split stumbled over his own feet and looked down at Tubbo, his eyes widening in what looked like nervousness. “Oh.. hey. Im doing good, I mean this is all kinda scary, yknow being a hero..” he trailed off and covered his face with his hands, groaning.

Tubbo laughed and looked up at him. “Not very social?”

Split nodded while still covering his face, he let out a small chuckle, “you could definitely say that again. I’ve never been one for talking, but I guess I’ll have to start.”

Tubbo nodded and looked down, he clasped his hands together and bit his lip awkwardly.

Why was being social so hard? I mean sure he didn’t get out of the apartment that much but he still talked to people. Well mostly Tommy, Ranboo, other people… did he have any other friends?

Tubbo snapped himself out of his thoughts when they entered the elevator. He squished into the corner next to the golden dude, Ojal, that was his name.

The elevator started moving down and Tubbo zoned out until they got to the first floor, They all stepped out and Obsidian walked out and started explaining the tower to them.

—————————————————————————————

Tubbo slipped into an alleyway and took off his vest and folded it up. He tucked it under his arm and pulled his mask off, shaking his hair out of his eyes.

He stuffed his mask into his vest and was left in a black shirt and baggy jeans, his light brown hair was lightly covering his eyes.

He was about to step out of the alley when he remembered the thing he was forgetting.

He stepped back into the shadows and concentrated, he felt something release inside of him and he relaxed his shoulders. He reached up to touch his horns and grinned, his goat ears twitched and he walked out of the alley and towards the closest store he could find, which happened to be a small clothing store.

He kept his vest tucked under his arm and walked into the store. He started browsing and found a few shirts and jackets he liked, which he quickly payed for and got a bag. He moved the items around and shoved his vest and mask to the bottom of the bag so it was hidden.

Tubbo briskly walked back to his apartment building and walked up the stairs, nodding to his neighbours as he passed them in the hallway. He pulled his keys from his pocket and accidentally pulled out a folded piece of paper as well. He snatched it quickly and stuffed it back in his pocket, that paper held the training schedule for the hero program.

He unlocked the door and walked inside their apartment to find Ranboo was home and reading a book on the couch.

Tubbo went straight to the only bedroom with a quick “hello” to his roommate before shutting the door, he opened his clothing drawer and shoved all the new clothes in, making a bit of a mess. He made sure that the vest and mask were hidden under his mound of clothes before walking out of the room and to the computer.

They had one computer that they all could use but Tubbo used it the most for his classes. He was the only one out of them who was determined to finish high school and maybe even get into university.

He sat down in front of the computer and started learning what he could about the hero tower and what the security was like, he was tempted to try and hack into the hero’s system but he had heard it was one of the most secure in the world.

He only wanted to learn a few things about it, not everything.

Ranboo seemed super invested in his book and wasn’t paying any attention to him so he decided to go in the official hero website and look at the training parts. He learned that it had been a few years since they had actually had any new trainees so this was going to help a lot, he also saw that they had posted that new hero’s were going to join soon and had put out a bit of information about each trainee.

Tubbo first saw Chaos’s and had to stifle a laugh as he saw how the hero’s described him. ‘A kind, patient and excited student, he certainly has the potential to do great things with his powers and skills.’ He completely agreed with the great things but describing Chaos as kind and patient? His name was literally Chaos and he was the most arrogant yet funny person ever, he got two of the hero’s to fight each other.

He was nervous to look at how they described him but when his eyes settled on the words he smiled brightly, as they had described him as quiet, generous and slightly cocky but with the abilities to go far in life and being a hero.

He wondered if anyone of the other trainees had seen what they had been described as. His thoughts were interrupted by the door banging open and his roommate Tommy walking through, Tommy was laughing at something in his phone but put it away when he walked in.

Tubbo sighed and wondered why everyone was interrupting his thinking, it was starting to get annoying.

Tommy walked over the couch and stared at Ranboo, who didn’t pay him any attention, before coming over to where Tubbo was looking at the hero stuff.

Tubbo freaked a bit and clicked off the tab a moment before Tommy looked over his shoulder.

Tommy frowned and turned to him, “What were you just looking at? It can’t be so bad that you gotta hide from your roommate aka best friend aka most amazing person in the world.” He grinned.

Tubbo sighed with playful annoyance and clicked into the tab again reluctantly, he scrolled up to where it introduced the new hero recruits.

He felt Tommy tense for a moment before relaxing again. That was strange, Tommy doesn’t have any reason to be scared of new hero trainees unless he was a vigilante or villain, and from what he had heard Tommy thought hero’s were the coolest.

“There’s gonna be new hero’s, I saw them post the news and thought I’d check them out. Ojal, Nuclear, Split, and Chaos.” He decided not no ask what had freaked his best friend out for a second and instead pretended to be interested in the article.

“Cool names, Chaos, now that’s a good one.” Tommy gave an approving nod after the comment and turned around before walking to the bedroom while pulling out his phone, “I’ll be in the bedroom doing absolutely nothin’ if you need me.”

Tubbo sighed and glanced at Ranboo who was still staring at the book.

Tubbo was about to go back to his searching when he noticed Ranboo’s ears, they were tilted towards him, that means he had been listening to his and Tommy’s conversation for whatever reason.

Something about hybrids is that a lot of them have ears that can move and twitch so it’s easy to tell if a hybrids listening to you.

Only Ranboo and Tubbo were hybrids but Tommy was an avian descendant so they all had strange blood. Ranboo was one of the rarest hybrids, he was a Enderman hybrid. All Enderman lived in the End and humans were not allowed on the island so he was one of the like two Enderman hybrids in the world, or at least on the Smp. Tubbo was a Goat hybrid, which was pretty common but still pretty cool.

Now that he thought about it, a lot of people on the mainland were hybrids. Some of the coolest hero’s were hybrids. Obsidian, Blackout, Singe, and probably others but that was all he knew of.

A ton of vigilantes and villains were hybrids too, the most famous being Thantanos, Blade, Risktaker and Plague.

Tubbo shook himself harshly, why was he thinking about how cool the vigilantes and villains were when he was training to be a hero. He should be hating the people who break the laws and hurt others, no matter how cool they are.

Tubbo closed the hero tab and instead checked if he had any homework. He had 2 assignments due by Monday, which was in four days.

He checked the time and was shocked, holy shit it was almost 10. How did that happen?

They had gotten off of training at like 6:30pm and he had taken a while to come back to the apartment so he had gotten back just past 7, he thought.

Had he really been researching for three hours?

He closed the computer and grabbed a snack before walking to the door of the bedroom, he stopped in the doorway and looked back at Ranboo. Ranboo was stare at him with the saddest eyes you have ever seen. This man had perfected human puppy eyes and it was so hard to say no, he was not going to fall for this again.

“Bo.. can I please have the bed today?” Ranboo mumbled in a small and pleading voice that completely melted Tubbos resolve.

“Finnneeee…” He growled and trudged towards the couch, he purposefully bumped into Ranboo on the way there before laying on the couch and pulling a spare blanket over him with only a bit of grumbling.

The rule was, and always had been since they moved it, that the two people who first got to the bedroom got the bed for the day. The last person left had to sleep on the couch. Now don’t get me wrong, the couch was quite comfortable it’s just that it’s narrow and there’s a big chance you’ll fall off.

Ranboo was skinny enough to not fall off the couch but no, Tubbo had to sleep on it and there was a guarantee he was going to get a rude awakening in the middle of the night.

Tubbo pushed himself as far into the back of the couch before giving in to the tired muscles.

It took only a few minutes for him to fall asleep, though they hadn’t done much training on the first day.

He fell asleep to dreams of a new life, where he was a hero as he had always wished for.
