Prompts: "I trusted you."

...

Rain was pouring heavily when Naruto arrived at the memorial. It was a good cover as it made it impossible for anyone who might have been watching to tell he was crying. The earthy scent of the rain that normally comforted the orphan only made it worse. His shoulders shook as he leaned against the cold stone of the memorial.

Several new names had been engraved onto it from their losses at the village attack. The first being Hayate Gekkou. He hadn't even made it to the attack on the village. His mentor has been brutally murdered a month before the exams when Naruto was off training with the Pervy Sage.

He slammed his fist into the stone. Pain flared into his fist but he ignored it. He should have been there! Hayate shouldn't have been alone that night! If he had been there maybe he could have helped!

Again and again he slammed his fist into the stone remembering Hayate's kindness. Warm home cooked meals. Taking him out to Ichiraku's Ramen Shop. Or just sitting with him when he was trying to study.

Hayate made him want to be a better version of himself. Naruto said he wanted to be Hokage but didn't really take action to do so. Hayate made him want to study and do better in class.

Now he was gone. He was gone and Naruto was alone again. Why did he believe Hayate when he said that he would be there for him? No one ever stayed around. They either died or abandoned him.

Naruto had thought Hayate would be different. Even with the man's chronic illness he always made time for Naruto. They had plans to speak after the Chunin Exams. Naruto had passed thanks to all the work he put in. Shikamaru and he were the only ones who had passed.

To make matters worse no one thought to tell him Hayate had died. He didn't find out until the day of the damn funerals that Hayate had died. Kakashi said it was because they didn't want to disrupt his training. Naruto called bullshit. They just didn't want to risk the Nine Tails going on a rampage due to his emotions. No one trusted him and he trusted no one. Not anymore.

"I trusted you," brokenly whispered Naruto as he stopped striking the stone, "I believed that you would be here for me. Why? Why did you have to leave me alone?"
