Work Text:
You never really know when you’ll die and Akito certainly wasn’t expecting the kitchen to be his deathbed. But as he looked at Toya picking up a knife and bringing it down on the cabbage, he’s pretty sure his life just flashed before his eyes. Toya grunts as his knife is wedged into the cabbage. He’s brought the wrong side of the knife down first. Maybe that’s a blessing in disguise. Akito reaches forward and pries Toya’s fingers off the knife. “Toya I told you to let me handle the cooking tonight.”
His boyfriend looks at him a defeated pout on his face. “I wanted to help you, it was my idea to host the dinner here in the first place.” That was so not fair. The look on his face practically made Akito weak in the knees. Frantically he glances around the kitchen which he had already set up. “Uh how about you wash the rice first? We need to get the rice cooking in the rice cooker anyways.”
Toya perks up at the notion of having a job to do. He bends down to the bottom counter and pulls out a bucket of rice before walking over to the rice cooker. Akito lets out a quiet sigh of relief. As much as he loves Toya, there is no way he’ll leave Toya unattended in the kitchen. Akito picks up the knife and resumes where Toya left off on the cabbage. He’ll quickly make the salad preparations before moving on to the curry and pork cutlets.
He works quickly as he rips apart the cabbage and lettuce before cutting them. He then goes over to the fridge to grab a couple of tomatoes while purposely avoiding the carrots. A somewhat sinister grin forms on his face as he dices the tomatoes and throws them into a bowl. He could practically hear An whining about the tomatoes.
In truth Akito wasn’t so keen on the idea of letting so many people into his apartment. Especially since the weirdo combo were invited. But An had came up with some excuse about how her and Kohane’s apartment were under going “reconstruction”. It was bull and they both knew it. Akito internally curses for not thinking of some lame excuse before Toya could offer to host the dinner at their place.
“Akito I’m done with the rice.” His thoughts are interrupted by his boyfriend. Toya is waiting there patiently for Akito. “Ah shoot yeah. Can you put the pizza we bought a couple of nights ago into the oven? There should be instructions on the back.” Cooking something in the oven should be a task even Toya could accomplish. Although Akito does remember when Toya once mentioned how he underdid some cupcakes and gave them to Kamishiro. Akito cringes at the thought.
“Once you get that in do you mind mixing all the vegetables together for the salad.” Toya hums his agreement as he pushes the frozen pizza into the oven and turns on the knob. Akito focuses his attention to the potatoes next as he rinses them and starts peeling. Thankfully he and Toya weren’t assigned with desserts. Kohane mentioned that she would bring some pie and cheesecakes so as not to overwhelm the two boys. It’s a good thing she offered because Akito has seen the outcome of some of Toya’s attempts at baking. One of which ended up with them replacing their entire oven.
A tap on his should causes him to look back. “I’m done with the salad and the dressing.” Shit that was faster than expected. Akito opened and closed his mouth as he tried to think of some other busy work for Toya to do. “Uhh great..! Could you set up the dinner table then?” Toya’s eyes narrow. “Akito I know what you’re trying to do here.”
Perceptive as always. Akito slumps his shoulders. “Sorry. I just don’t want you to accidentally hurt yourself. I can handle all this by myself anyways.” It’s not like he doesn’t appreciate Toya trying to help him, Akito is just genuinely a little worried that one of these days their cooking antics will end up in tragedy.
The concern on his face must be very evident because Toya brings his arms around his waist as his chin rests on his shoulder. “It’s fine Akito, I’m not a child I can take care of myself. But if you’re really all that worry then I’ll just be your moral support. How about that?” The answer is probably already very obvious based on the blush in his face and ears.
Trying to ignore how Toya is quite literally wrapped around him, Akito goes back to cutting up the potatoes. Beside him Toya hums a song from a performance of theirs. The two of them stay like that for a while as Akito makes the curry.
Eventually he lightly shrugs Toya off and turns around. He gestures towards the curry in the pot. “You mind stirring for me so I can work on the pork?” Silver eyes instantly light up as Toya eagerly nods. It’s almost childish and Akito can’t help but laugh.
Although Akito has his reservations the curry turns out pretty nice underneath the gentle stirring of Toya’s hand.

Actually out of the two of them, Akito is the one who ends up actually hurting himself.
“Oh shit!” He exclaims in pain as oil pops out of the pot. He was making fries and had accidentally dropped the potatoes in too harshly and was immediately met with some back lash. “Akito?!” Toya’s head peaks over from the dining room, his face is scrunched in concern. Once he was done with the curry the blue haired boy had actually ended up going out to set up the table and clean up the dining room. Akito is wiping his hand against a cold towel. “Don’t mind me! It was just some stray pops of oil!”
Of course Toya doesn’t actually listen and he walks over anyways to inspect his hand. He gentle holds his hand and runs his thumb over the top of it. “Does it hurt?” Akito shakes his head. “Just a short burst of pain on contact but I’m good now.” Toya has his scolding face on so Akito tries to quickly defend himself. “Sorry man! I was in a rush so a dropped the potatoes in too quickly. Won’t do it again alright?”
Toya shakes his head and brings his hand up to his lips and gives it a quick peck. “I’m not mad Akito, just don’t want you hurting yourself either got it?” Akito’s brain short circuits at the gesture so he just dumbly nods. Being the teasing bastard he is Toya notices and grins. Akito looks away in embarrassment. “I gotta get back to the fries…” Toya laughs and tilts his head down for a kiss on the lips this time.
They part quickly and Akito hides his face in the crook of Toya’s neck. Even years later he still can’t get over the embarrassment of his boyfriend’s teasing affection. In retaliation he just hugs Toya harder. They stay like that for quite a while.
That is until Toya sniffs. “Uh Akito? Is something burning?”
“OH FUC-”
As it turns out Toya accidentally set the oven’s temperature way too high. So when they opened the oven they were greeted with a huge puff of smoke and a pizza so charred it look like a huge piece of coal. They later had to push the dinner back by an hour because the smoke detector wouldn’t stop beeping and in their panic they had also forgot about the fries. The oil somehow managed to boil over and the kitchen was promptly shut down.
On the bright side everything else was already made so dinner still happened. If you ignored the the yellow hazard tape keeping people out of the kitchen, everything else about the dinner turned out pretty good.
