Work Text:

As shinazugawa was walking back home from work, he couldn't help but hear the light sounds of footsteps from behind, it was way too light to be a stalker, well a human one at least.

He glanced behind him to notice a small black cat, its most notable features being his sapphire blue eyes that seemed to bore into his soul.

This exact same black cat has been following him for about a month now, it was strange, maybe it was just homeless? It didn't seem hostile nor shy like the previous street cats he had met throughout the years, in fact, it seemed to like him which made sanemi feel quite proud of himself.

He slowly crouched down and offered his hand to the little cat in an attempt to befriend it.
Almost immediately to sanemi's astonishment, the cat leaned into sanemi's hand, not even bothering to give it a sniff.

Sanemi gently scratched the top of the cat's head with his free hand, running it through his surprisingly silky fur. For a street cat, it seemed to be well groomed.

Sanemi shrugged the thought off, jotting it down as cats being cats. They always liked to groom themselves so maybe that was the case with this little fellow as well. He gave it another scratch, this time under its chin before slowly getting up with a small grunt.

"Well then, I'm off."

He gave the small cat a wave and for a second, he thought he saw the cat slouch and frown, as if it didn't want him gone but he quickly shrugged it off as him being tired from work, it was just impossible for a cat to look upset over him leaving.

As he began to walk home, he continued to hear the soft sounds of pittar patter behind him. He let it slide again, assuming the cat just became attached to him and would leave when he arrives back home or by morning.

The evening was quite dark, meaning it was about to rain soon, well more or less. That's what the weather cast said this morning as well. He quickly rushed back home and just as he arrived back to his little home, he had turned to see behind him and he saw that same cat, now sitting on his porch with its head tilted to the side.

Sanemi gave it a smile and a wave before unlocking his front door and entering inside, locking the door behind him. He figured he'd give him some left overs and leave it on the porch if the cat is still there after dinner.

And lo and behold, the cat was still outside of the house. Except this time, it was pouring and the cat was jumping and dancing in the rain without a care in world.

Sanemi walked towards the door and held it open, sitting down just behind the door to watch the small black cat play around under the rain. It was cute to say the least, watching the animal run in circles, jump up with its tongue out to lick the rain and even lay on his back and squirm around, as if the water droplets tickled him. It was adorable to see an animal so happy.

Watching the cat made sanemi, maybe one day he could be this carefree with someone he likes, that'd be nice. He'd love to do this with his high school crush, it's silly but he still does miss him..

This went on for about twenty minutes until it looked like the little furry creature lost all its energy and laid down on the ground. He figured it'd go back home afterwards or wherever it lived when he regain its energy so he stayed their for another thirty minutes until the cat got up, but instead of leaving, it looked towards him and walked towards him soon after.

It startled sanemi but he watched and even offered him his hand again to which the cat once again happily took, licking gently before rubbing it's cheek against it.

The action reminded sanemi of his high school best friend and crush, he'd occasionally place his hand on their cheek and they'd lean against it. It always made sanemi's heart go crazy. He wishes he could have that back.

Once he figured the cat really doesn't have a place to go back to, he'd gently pick it up, not bothering if his clothes got wet from the animal's drenched fur. He'd close the door, locking it before taking it into the bathroom for a proper bath. He used to have a cat that he took care of for his younger brother and thankfully still had the products even after his brother took him back after his trip.

He'd put the little animal on the counter as he filled the sink, making sure it was lukewarm before placing the little creature in it. It wasn't hard to see the cat loved water; unlike most. It happily splashed and spun, enjoying his time.

"You seemed to like water, huh?"

He chuckled, the cat let out a soft meow as a reply and sanemi took it as a yes.
He grabbed the cat shampoo he had and started to gently scrub the cat clean before rinsing it all off and wrapping the kitty into a towel. He knew he should've cleaned it better but the cat looked well taken care of and cleaned so he chose not to, maybe he'd take it to a vet in the morning.

He gently towel dried the furry creature.

"Hey hey—! No trying jump on me with that wet fur of yours"

He laughed, pulling the cat away from his torso. It was clear to him that the cat was attached to him, it was cute. He could get used to having him around the house.

-

It's been a month since then, the little cat that he had chose to name 'yū' began to live with him. He definitely didn't choose that name because the cat reminded him of a special someone (that's a lie.)

Currently he was laying on the couch, watching some shitty dramas on the TV with his cat napping on his torso. One hand was holding onto his phone, scrolling through old pictures from his high school years, more particularly his high school crush who he still had the hots for, while the second stroked yū gently. The tv now being more of a background noise.

It wasn't exactly a good morning, it had been raining all day, occasionally stopping before beginning again and it was hard to keep yū in the house, thankfully this time, he was asle—

"Meow.."

Oh no..

His cat slowly sat up, its ears perking up to the sound of the rain. Sanemi placed his phone on the coffee table, using his arms to keep the cat in place on his chest.

"No. Bad. You're not getting wet tonight."

"Meow."

"Yū, we've spoke about this."

"Meow~"

"Yū. No rain."

"Mmmmeeeow~!!"

And with that, the little blob of darkness wiggled it's way out of sanemi's grasp before making a beeline for the small cat door sanemi had installed for him.

"Yū! Get your ass back here!—"

Sanemi quickly got himself off the couch, grabbing the front door's keys before dashing behind his cat. Unfortunately the cat just had to be faster, he swears that thing isn't a normal cat, it's just too weird.

Before he could grab it, yū slipped through the little cat door. Sanemi grumbled to himself as he unlocked the door and put on some flip flops, he quickly followed behind his cat in the empty street, not forgetting to lock his doors before he left.

The two ran with yū taking the lead while sanemi chased after, calling it so that he'd come back. By some point, he had lost yū when they arrived at a park so sanemi just walked around aimlessly until he saw a little shimmer somewhere behind a tree, he decided to walk over to it, maybe yū found something and started playing with it, he hopes that's what it was.

What he didn't expect when he peaked around the tree was his cat transforming into a person, not just any person, but tomioka giyū. The same guy he had been rambling about to his cat, the same guy he had been crushing on since high school, the same guy he planned a foolish future with. All this time. He was a cat, a shapeshifter? The cat that he lived with..

He looked just as beautiful as he did in highschool, if not even more now. God does he have to thank kochō's younger sister for letting them meet in high school.

That conversation suddenly replayed in his mind as he fell backwards on his butt, falling on top of the wet grass. He thought it was all a joke but clearly..clearly it wasn't.

The sound of sanemi falling for the ground caught giyū's attention. His face flushed a bright red as he whipped his head around to look at sanemi with his eyes wide open and his lips slightly parted.

"Shina— I can explain! Please."

Sanemi watched as giyū got on all fours, but it was clear he was hesitant in actually crawling towards him.

He quickly shook his head, deciding to be the bigger man in this situation and ask about this despite how crazy this was. Hybrids weren't like mythical or anything, just rare. Extremely rare. Perhaps just 0.7% of the world were hybrids, so it wasn't as if giyū being a cat was completely weird and foreign..just new.

He slowly sat up properly, wanting one answer.

"Why? Why did you do all that when you could've just contacted me?"

He could see how giyū only froze at the question before lowering his head, he leaned back to sit on his knees. It looked as if he were ashamed of what he had done.

"I..I just— I was scared. I didn't think you like guys, and contacting you..the idea of doing that and you ignoring me terrified me."

He paused for a moment, taking in a sharp breath.

"Even after learning you like me, something in me just told me not to, to not do it yet, to wait until the right moment. Perhaps now..i wanted to be with you, even if it meant living as a cat for the rest of my life."

Sanemi's gaze softened at giyū's words. So that's how he felt? Maybe somethings never change.

By now, the two were drenched in rain and mud. They were dirty, but something about the moment gave them comfort, they felt content with what's happening. Maybe it was because they knew each other for years, maybe because they had always loved each other.

He slowly moved closer to giyū, gently placing a hand on his cheek just as he always did, and like always, giyū leaned on it, a small purr emitting from him as he did.

"Yeah..maybe waiting wasn't so bad."

Sanemi laughed, he raised his other hand, using it to gently stroke the top of giyū's head, feeling over his soft ears.

"You're such a goddamn idiot for waiting this long."

"Your idiot..?"

"My idiot."

He smiled as giyū quickly raised his eyes up, his eyes twinkling like the stars in the night sky. God, how beautiful could this man get?

Giyū jumped on him, causing both him and sanemi to fall backwards and roll down a hill. The two laughing as they rolled together, their arms wrapped around each other.

As they finally landed, the two laid on their backs, staring up at the sky with their limbs sprawled out while holding each other's hand.
The rain was now gone and the moon had come out. It was as if nature was on their side.

Giyū hummed softly, catching sanemi's attention.

Sanemi turned to look at him, he could see the blush growing on giyū's cheek as he began to speak again.

"Sanemi..you know, the moon, It looks really beautiful tonight..wouldn't you agree?"

He asked, keeping his eyes on the moon above them.

Sanemi smiles wider, as he looked at giyū in the softest and most affectionate way possible.

"Yeah, I agree. Beautiful."

Sanemi watched as giyū whipped his head towards him, realizing it wasn't the moon he was talking about but him. His face burned up, his face and even the tip of his ears now red.

Groaning, giyū rolled towards sanemi, burying his face in his chest as sanemi laughed, petting his head.

Yeah, he was his cat alright.

Fate's such a silly yet wonderful thing.

Sanemi's glad giyū waited because this was the best confession ever. Hopefully, their future would stay just as bright.
