Despite the silence that filled the room, there lay some kind of tension between Rui and Nene. Not in a bad way, of course. It was… Some kind of unresolved emotion.
A plate lined with chocolate chip cookies, a few crumbs left behind from some missing cookies, sat on top of the table, made and prepared by Nene’s mom for the two teenagers who sat in the green hair’s room.
It was just a normal sleepover. At least, it was supposed to be.
The two had already had countless sleepovers beforehand, but… What made this one so different? What was this weird feeling between the two of them?
Nene didn’t give herself a single moment to dwell on it, button-mashing on her controller as she played yet another FPS game, ramming multiple enemies with her bullets as she bit down on her lip, entirely focused on mowing down the other team.
Rui watched in silence as the girl furiously, yet effortlessly shot down player after player. Nearly everyone was complaining, accusing Nene of being a hacker considering she was a relatively new player, but she was still handling each and every one of them with the skill of a veteran. The purple boy could only help but giggle to himself as he watched the events unfold.
The silence that was crowding the room was surprisingly comfortable. It wasn’t awkward in any way, it was the usual type of silence the two shared when they were alone together. It was nice having a person that you can just be silent with, to still have a sort of connection without the use of words.
Well, not entirely silent, as Nene kept groaning every time she died, but that was quickly blocked out from the purple hair’s ears.
After the match was over, it displayed Nene’s in-game avatar at the #1 spot, calling her the MVP of her team.
She checked the time and noticed the time had just struck twelve, meaning that it was probably about time to head off to bed for the two of them. “Hey, Rui.” She turned to look at the purple boy, who was laying down on the bean bag chair. “Turn the lights off, would you?”
“Gladly.” He said, sing-songy, as he got up from his seat and flicked the light switch. The lights dimmed enough just to be able to see just a little. “Am I sleeping on the bean bag yet again?”
It was tradition for their sleepovers that Nene took the bed and Rui took the bean bag below. Of course, this wasn’t entirely fair, but Rui couldn’t really complain, could he? It wasn’t his house after all.
“Um…” Nene blushed through the darkness, she seriously hoped that Rui couldn’t see it in the dark. “You wouldn’t mind sharing the bed with me, would you…?” Nene couldn’t believe what she was saying. Even though she had rehearsed this line, like the way she would in shows and performances, she still nearly voice-cracked at the end due to her anxiousness.
This was it, this was the moment. She’d been preparing this for a while, but only now she had the guts to. She kept mentally preparing herself for this throughout the day, barely focusing in school and in practice for her troupe’s next show. She didn’t really mean to be silent through the sleepover, but… would all of that make up for this?
“No, I wouldn’t.” Rui kept the same tone, despite the fact that he was about to shatter into a million pieces at this very moment.
“Oh… good.” She sat down on the bed and lay down, waiting for Rui to join her next.
Hesitantly, he lay down next to her, making himself comfortable. They were so close… It was like Nene could just…
Kiss him.
She blushed furiously at the thought, making a tiny noise. Rui flipped his body to face her, and now they could both see how equally red the other was. “Um… Come closer, you might fall off the bed…” Nene put an arm around his waist and brought the boy closer to herself.
“Ah- Thanks.” He would usually say more than just a single word, but this situation was overriding the entire code of his brain that he could barely remember anything about himself. His mind was just filled with Nene, Nene, Nene.
She could just… It was fine, right?
Without much warning besides stroking his cheek a little with the palm of her hand, Nene just went in and softly kissed the purple boy. He quickly closed his eyes, fully expecting this to happen, and reciprocated the kiss back.
The weird tension in the room slowly melted with their kiss, the room remaining as quiet as ever.
Once the kiss had ended, Rui wrapped his arms around the smaller girl, holding her close to his warmth. “Goodnight~” He whispered softly into her ear, making her flustered all over again.
“Night…” The girl muttered and closed her eyes, drifting off to sleep in his arms.
What a soft feeling…
A feeling that the both of them shared, connecting the two like a string.
And it would remain as theirs and theirs only.
