Signs of Wizardry

Summary:

Mr Clarke knows his students. He knows they have never shown signs of wizardry before this
So how come they're showing it now?

Work Text:

Wizards are solitary as much as they can be. Schools like to keep records of the wizards that visit them in order to know what their local area is known for. The magic of wizards is powerful but oh so specialised, enough that sometimes it'll work on say orange mint, and nothing else, not even other types of mint.

Between Hawkins high school and Hawkins library they have no clue at all what their town is known for, because just about every recorded specialisation for wizards has visited regularly, if not simply made Hawkins their home.

Mr Clarke is one of the wizards with a stranger specialisation in that he's specialised in collecting information, but doesn't want to run the library. He's also heard a few people say that he's specialised in Hawkins which he can't quite deny. Over his time in Hawkins he's kept the studies of many wizards as well as recorded the near unending accounts of spells that should work everywhere else failing in Hawkins only. He keeps a map of the area to show where the possible to likely failure zones for magic are over Hawkins.

Then Wills Byers goes missing and is found again. If Mr Clarke hadn't known Dustin, Lucas, Mike and Will as kids in town for years, he'd have assumed they were awaiting training in wizardry from the things suddenly just happening around them. They had all the signs now, when before they'd had none. If it was just Will, he'd understand, but what trauma could the other three have gone through to cause this?
