Work Text:

Only seconds after Sunny was awoken to the sounds knocking on his front door, he immediately knew who had come to visit. There was, at the very least, a ninety-nine percent chance that it was his boyfriend, Kel. No one else he’d ever known knocked like he did. He didn’t stop until there was an answer, and he was practically beating the door down. It wasn’t like Sunny was that light of a sleeper. He’d sleep for thirteen hours, if given the chance. However, he couldn’t complain. No matter what Kel was there for, he would be happy to see him.

He got out of bed as quickly as he could, still in his pajamas. He knew that didn’t really matter all that much. Sunny would have called out to Kel to tell him that he was getting to the door as fast as he possibly could and there was no need to keep on knocking, but he knew that was no way he would hear him. So, he was just speed-walking as fast as his tired self could manage.

Just after wiping the last bit of sleep from his eye, Sunny opened the door. Just as he expected, Kel was standing there, looking just delighted to see him. However, there was something about him that wasn’t within his expectations. Kel was holding a box, a gift box in fact. It seemed like the most stereotypical form of one he could imagine, too: a white box with a red bow ribbon. Maybe it was bad to assume…however, he could guess that it was for him.

“Good morning, Sunshine!!” Kel beamed. It was probably cheesy to say, but Sunny was certain that Kel’s smile could light up a dark and empty shopping mall. It seemed Kel noticed the fact that Sunny was in his pajamas pretty quickly, and probably his tired expression, too. “Uh, sorry if I woke you…I know it’s super early. I just really wanted to see you, and I didn’t want to wait, and I also got you something!”

So Sunny was correct. It wasn’t necessarily that big of a revelation, but Sunny still decided to let himself feel partially accomplished with that feat. He eyed the box curiously. “It’s okay. It’s good to see you." Kel looked to be much happier at hearing that, any minor apprehension in his facial expression now gone. “What’s in the box?”

“It’s a surprise, silly!” He replied, “You have to open it first.” Kel almost handed it over, before pulling it right back to himself. “Actually, can I go inside first? It’s, uh, kinda cold out here...”

Sunny yawned. Although he was rather happy, he was still tired. “Oh, yeah, of course,” Sunny said, holding the door open so he could walk in. Kel seemed more than happy to do so, and since he’d been over time and time again, it took him no second to rush straight to the living room to sit on the couch. Sunny followed close behind, though at a slower pace, after he closed the front door.

By the time Sunny got there, Kel was already sitting on the couch. He seemed just ecstatic, like if the two of them had to wait another minute he would certainly end up spoiling the surprise before Sunny opened the gift box. Finally, Sunny sat down next to him, and it wasn’t even seconds later that Kel handed the box over to him. “You gotta open it!”

“Alright, alright,” Sunny said, with a small laugh that was just barely noticeable. His tiredness made it so his hands felt more weak than usual, annoyingly enough, but that wasn’t enough to stop him by any means. Kel watched with wide eyes as Sunny began to neatly undo the ribbon, before pulling off the lid to the box, and peaking inside. Before he’d done so, he could only guess it might be something stereotypically romantic, like a necklace, or something of the sort. Maybe he should have known better, though, since his boyfriend was Kel.

Inside of the box was a clock. Not just a plain one, not at all. It was a clock that was made to look like a moon, and as Sunny carefully took it out of the container, he observed with awe. If you asked him, it truly was an amazing piece of art, beautiful and bright. Sunny couldn’t stop a smile from forming on his face. He looked over to Kel, who looked just as happy as he did when he wasn’t even the one receiving a gift.

“So, Sun’, do you like it?” Kel’s voice was hopeful. “I remember you mentioning that you think the moon is super pretty, so…”

He remembered that? Sunny had only mentioned that once, from what he could recall. And, wasn’t that months ago? Sunny felt his heart melt.

“I love it, Kel...” His voice was genuine, and full of love.  “Where did you manage to find this?”

Kel seemed more than willing to tell the story. “Oh! Yesterday, my mom went to the furniture store, and took me along to help her pick out a new couch. But, every time I suggested something, she disagreed with me. And you know me, always wandering around or whatever, so I decided to take a look around the store, just to see what they had! Since I obviously wasn’t helping my mom, anyway, she didn’t really mind.” Sunny nodded, so Kel knew that he was indeed listening. “Then I had the idea to get something for you! So I looked around, and I didn’t really find much, because most of the stuff in that place was pretty boring, honestly. I ended up in the clock section, and I didn’t really expect to find something there, but then I saw that moon clock! As soon as I saw it I knew I had to get it for you, since, you know, you said you like the moon! Which I said already, didn’t I?” His sentence was punctuated with a slightly awkward chuckle at that realization.

Kel always seemed to ramble, but that was okay. Sunny loved listening to him talk. “...Thank you, Kel. I really love it.”

“Of course, Sunny!! I’m really glad you like it so much, because I love you so much!” Kel exclaimed, reaching his arms out and leaning to give Sunny a hug. Sunny did his best to hold onto the clock, which almost ended up getting knocked right out of his hands. However, since it was perfectly fine, that was alright.

“I love you, too, Kel,” Sunny replied calmly, returning the hug with his one free hand. At that moment, he felt so unbelievably happy. He adored the gift a lot, but that affection was nothing in comparison to how much love he had for Kel.
