She rolled a rock across the frayed asphalt using the bottom of her shoe. It clicked and rattled, scraping like nails on a chalkboard. Cars passed by, too many cars for this time of night. In Hatchetfield, none of this would be happening. It felt like a lie, even in her own heart, but Grace stood firm against doubt in this, her final feeble defense against the tears she felt budding in her eyes. None of this would have happened if the gym hadn’t flooded. None of this would have happened if she’d been in her own town, with people who cared, with a church that would take her in unquestioningly. None of this would have happened if there had been a split-gender prom.

School spirit is high, teenagers are preparing to go to college, and two weeks before prom, the Hatchetfield High gymnasium floods. There's nowhere to turn, so this year, the graduating classes of Hatchetfield and Clivesdale High are being forced to hold a united prom in Clivesdale. Welcomed poorly, Grace Chasity finds herself alone, lost, and uncomfortable in a city very unlike the one she’s used to. For one night, she decides, she will let herself be different. And indeed, she ends the night a very different person than she began it.
