When Jason said, "This was never going to work out…I'm sorry, I'm never going to be the hero you want me to be. I have every confidence in you that you'll stay the hero that I know you are", it had hurt like hell. Roy wanted to scream at him that he was only a hero because Jason broke him out of a cell and kept him honest about his sobriety; that he'd never wanted Jason to be anything but himself and that'd been more than enough; that this didn't have to be an ending - but in the end, he'd let him go, because you can't keep a bat in a cage and claim that you love it.
And, you know what? Maybe, if they'd never fucked, Roy could've walked out of this without feeling like he'd been shot in the chest - but they had…multiple times…all over Starfire's ship and Gotham's rooftops.
