Chapter 1: 1. Spooky house exploration (Kenda, Romantic)

Chapter Text

“I’m saying, it’s perfectly safe!” Ken pushes the door open to the house, the door making a loud creak noise. “I’m not so sure I trust you in that, Ken. This place looks one swift breeze away from collapsing.” Ken walks in and Brenda goes in behind him. “Just trust me. You do trust me, right?” Ken inquires. “Of course I do. Otherwise I wouldn’t be here, silly.” Brenda ruffles his hair.

It started out as a joke. Ken loudly exclaimed that if someone were to go with him to the old (supposedly) haunted house about how romantic it would be. And he expected no one to take him up on it, because this was just one of his shenanigans.

He didn’t expect Brenda Miller to take him up on it. Brenda Miller, AKA the girl he’s been crushing on for the last couple of weeks. At first, he wanted to explain, but then he realized he couldn’t say no to those blue eyes so he agreed to take her.

So here they were, in one of the most infamous houses in their small town. The story goes as so: a wife and husband, singers, soulmates, always near each other. They bought the mansion in hopes to have their own family one day, but the wife couldn’t have children. The townspeople declared her a witch and set out to hunt her because of her siren-like voice. But her husband had defended her so dearly that when the townspeople finally captured the wife, the husband begged and pleaded, to no avail. The townspeople brandished knives and axes, and when they attempted to swing at her, the husband shoved her aside and took the attack. As the husband bled out, the wife held him in her arms, singing and singing while she sobbed, and it was only then that the townspeople realized their horrid actions. The wife became a recluse, and it’s said you can still hear her singing to her late husband.

“Hey, Brenda? Do you believe in ghosts?” Ken turns to look at her. “Hm? I mean, I guess so. It’s kinda like how you believe in aliens.” She shrugs. “It's not the same!” “Whatever you say. But I’m saying, if a ghost showed up I’d have no choice but to say “well that’s a ghost!” “Alright. Want to go upstairs?” “Sure.”

They take the rickety stairs upwards, noticing their hands not covered in dust after touching the banister. They turn right and walk down the hallway. That’s when Brenda stops in front of a certain portrait.

“Hey, she kinda looks like me, huh?” Brenda tilts her head to get a better look. Ken goes to stand next to her. “Wow. Those are definitely your eyes.” He breathes out. “Yeah. It’s a bit creepy, huh?” Brenda chuckles.

The portrait depicted a late wife with her husband, in each other's arms. “So you notice my eyes a lot, huh?” Brenda smiles. “What?” Ken feels his face heat up. “You heard me. Now, lets go to the big room!” Brenda grabs Ken by the hand and then they’re running down the hallway.

They stop when they reach the end of the hallway, where a cedar door stands right in front of them. Before either of them can open the door, they hear it.

A melody. A beautiful, harmonic melody that doesn’t seem to have any actual words but the notes were soaked in love nonetheless.

“Please don’t tell me I’m the only one who can hear this, right princess?” Ken moves closer to Brenda. “No, no. I heard it too. It’s beautiful.” Brenda uses the palm of her hand to gently push the door.

What it revealed was truly a sight. It was the couple, dancing around the room while they sang. They spun around and around, like they had all the time in the world. Well they did, considering they were, y’know, dead

The wife notices them, beautiful blue eyes of hers making eye contact with Brenda’s own. “Oh, dear! It seems we have some guests, my love.” The wife lets go of her husband to walk towards them. “Well, come on! It’s rude to block the doorway!” She holds Brenda’s hand and gestures for Ken to follow, so he does.

The wife pulls them both into the center of the room. “It’s lovely to meet you two! What are your names?” “I’m Brenda.” “Ken.” They both reply. “Different last names, I suppose?” “Yes?” Brenda questions, confused. “Well that’s no good! You two look like the perfect lovers. When are you two getting wed?” Brenda and Ken both turn bright red. “I see, a sensitive topic. Well, let’s dance! Come on!” The wife goes back to her husband.

The wife begins to dance once again with her husband, and soon enough Brenda puts her hands on Ken’s shoulders and does the same. They spin around and around just like the late couple, letting themselves dance like it’s just the two of them.

After what seems like hours, Ken and Brenda bid the ghost couple goodbye. They walk out of the old mansion and stop just as they cross the street.

“Y’know, dancing with an infamous ghost couple in an old mansion is definitely not my idea of a first date.” Brenda giggles. “Yeah, definitely more of a second date.” Ken chides. “But- this definitely was the best date I’ve been on.” “Guess it’s gonna be hard to top this one, right doll?” “Yeah.”

Brenda kisses Ken on the cheek. Ken turns bright red. “Well how about this time you let me plan?” “Okay. Yeah, of course, whatever you want.” Brenda grabs Ken’s hand. “Great. Now c’mon, let's go get milkshakes!” “Alright.”
