Back to the Big Apple

Summary:

It was a normal day when it all began. The sky turned gold and the earth rumbled. Robin, Sam, Aster, Alex and Andy learn of a prophecy they are given to complete. Their first stop? The grand City of New York.

Robin isn't the most thrilled about having to go on this quest, especially to this place. But maybe there will be more to this quest than meets the eye?

Chapter Text

Five as one, across the land; Do not fail, or be doomed by your own hand.

Boy of magic and blood of gold; Open your heart and see the story unfold.

Robin could feel the sun against his face as he drifted into the waking world. He didn't want to get up, his bed felt so nice. But if he didn't get up Willa would get on his case for being lazy. Peeling his eyes open, the young wizard sat up and stretched out his arms, letting out a yawn. It was weird as he actually felt refreshed for once after sleeping.Something was going to go badly, wasn't it?

Looking over at his bed he saw Al; his other half, curled up and snoozing away. Robin reached over and gave a gentle scratch to the top of the snake familiar's head. Al let out a soft hiss and his eyes fluttered open. He uncurled himself and let out a yawn.

"Did you have to wake me up? I was having such a nice dream. Can't we sleep in?" Al complained while stretching.

"We have stuff to do today so sadly no," Robin replied.

Getting onto the swing of things, the young wizard changed into his regular clothes and made sure he looked somewhat presentable. Al slithered around Robin's jacket collar as he walked out of the room.

"You're in a good mood today," the snake familiar commented.

"It probably won't last long," Robin mumbled.

Al nudged his head against Robin's chin. "Cheer up. I haven't seen you this happy in ages."

The young wizard couldn't argue with that. The past few months had been a good improvement in Robin's eyes. He was no longer on the streets, had a good bed to sleep in and got good meals to eat. He'd made some good progress on training his magic although it was definitely far from being as good as it could be. The most important (at least to him) was the new relationships he'd made.

Making his way downstairs, he slipped into the kitchen, leaning on the door-frame. Willa was whisking around the kitchen, tending to several different things that were cooking. Robin didn't know why she made so much food when there was only three of them that lived in the building (although Sam did eat a lot of food). He also didn't know what to make of the older wizard. She was kind enough to Robin but she also kept her distance, like she was afraid something would happen if she got too close (looked like he and Willa had something in common then). The older wizard was cooking what seemed to be eggs and bacon and it all smelt amazing.

Glancing around, he noticed a certain lack of green sunshine.

"Have you seen Sam anywhere? I thought he'd have been down before me," he questioned.

Willa didn't look up from her cooking, giving a shrug. "He's likely still asleep. You wouldn't mind going and waking him up would you?"

Without saying another word, Robin made his way back upstairs.

Making his way up to the young gargoyle's room, he knocked on the door. When no noise came from inside, Robin slowly opened the door and peeked his head inside. The room was empty, the hammock at the other side of the room was devoid of any gargoyles. Robin couldn't help but let out a sigh. He was up on the roof again, wasn't he?

Swiftly making his way up to the roof, Robin quickly found who he was looking for. Sam was fast asleep, leaning against a large stone slab. His arms were crossed and his head was lopsided. It didn't look that comfortable. It reminded Robin of when he used to sleep on the streets and his neck had only just recovered from sleeping like that.

Crouching down next to his friend, he gently shook the young gargoyle's arm. Wearily blinking his eyes open, Sam glanced around and spotted Robin.

"Oh hi," the young gargoyle greeted, his eyes still a bit droopy.

Robin couldn't help but smile. "Hey sleepyhead, about time you got up,"

Sam sat up properly, stretching out his limbs. "What time is it anyway?" he inquired while yawning.

"Way past sunrise. I'm surprised you slept in this much; Were you staring up at the stars again?" Robin asked. The young gargoyle sheepishly looked away from Robin's gaze. "Yeah."

"You know you have a bed right?" Robin explained, trying to catch Sam's gaze. Sam continued to avoid Robin's eyes.

Sadness crept up in the young wizard's veins. He'd found Sam up on the roof more often than not, like he was purposely avoiding his bed. No matter how many times Robin had tried he couldn't seem to get an answer out of Sam as to why he wouldn't sleep in his bed.

Placing a hand on Sam's shoulder, the young gargoyle glanced at Robin from the corner of his eyes.

"You know if there's something wrong you can tell me right?" Robin stated, giving Sam a soft smile.

The young gargoyle returned the smile which was a warm and welcoming one. "I know."

Robin and Sam stood up, Sam stretching out his wings. "Why did you come looking for me anyway?"

"One, because you're my friend. And two, we're going out today, remember?"

Sam looked surprised. "Oh my thorn. I totally forgot. We need to go now."

Robin had to put his hand out to stop the young gargoyle from rushing off in a flurry.

"Hold on there one moment; We need to eat and get ready first."

Sam's face flushed a dark green in embarrassment. "Right. Forgot about food for a moment."

Sam made his way into the building and Robin followed his friend, a small smile plastered on his face.
