Chapter Text
“Let’s go to that campus bingo night, maybe we’ll find friends.” Sapnap said, looking over at Dream who was on his own bed. He had Minecraft bed sheets for the meme. Sapnap had some anime characters on his comforter.
“Sure why not.” Dream said and stood up, popping his back and grabbing a drink from his mini fridge. I was a water bottle. Sapnap followed suit and pet Patches quickly before letting Dream say goodbye to his ESA.
The leaves were starting to change ever so slightly around campus. Dream enjoyed fall.
They walked into the dining hall and asked two random people if they could sit with them as there were really no empty tables.
“Sure!” Said the boy with light brown hair. “I’m Karl, this is my roommate George. He’s from London.”
“Ello.” George said with a soft smile and Dream sat next to the dark haired man. He was instantly drawn to him like a moth to a flame. Like the sun to the moon. And he always loved the moon.
“Nice to meet ya’ll. I’m Nick and this is Clay.” Sapnap sat next to Karl and they instantly started talking about Anime.
“What’s your favorite season?” Dream asked and George seemed taken aback by the question, like no one had ever asked him that before.
“Autumn.” George said. “I like being able to dress warm without actually having to freeze my ass off. And the leaves are pretty.” A pause, “I would argue they are the prettiest thing.”
“Usually I would agree with you,” Dream spoke softly, “But I think I found a counter argument to the changing leaves being the prettiest thing ever.”
“And what might your counter argument be?” George asked with soft doe eyes that held the secrets of the tides. Like he was the moon, finally meeting the sun in an eclipse. Like they were destined to meet.
“You.”
George hid his blush behind his hand, “Shut up, idiot.” He said in argument and Dream just laughed. Dream could see the light in George’s eyes shine at his laugh. But the smile that clung to his face after the laugh is what George really seemed interested in. Dream would have to smile for him more often.
None of them ended up winning bingo, but Sapnap ended up going back to Karl’s dorm with him and George went back with Dream. They didn’t have classes for two more days.
“You play Minecraft?” George asked, taking note of Dream’s bed spread. Dream laughed and nodded.
“Yeah, have for a long time and a lot of it.” Dream admitted.
“I also play, we’ll have to play sometime. I code mods for people here and there.” George said before he grew confused why Dream was clicking his tongue. George gasped when he saw a cat come out from under Dream’s bed.
“This is Patches.” Dream said and George crouched down in front of her, letting her sniff her hand before petting her gently behind her ear. Patches purred instantly. “I know it's stupid but I base my friendships on if she likes someone or not.”
“It’s not stupid, cats are a good judge of character. And Patchington here, seems like a sweet cat.” George smiled at Dream and he felt his heart stop at the genuine smile on the brunette's face. It shone in a different way than Dream’s. Dream’s smiles were bright and cheerful. George’s was a soft light in the dark.
“Already giving her a nickname, damn.” Dream said and George looked around the room, seeing Dream’s football jersey with his last name and number on it.
‘’Dream.” George said.
“Yeah, it’s not a common last name.” Dream said. “And I like the number 4.”
“That’s actually crazy, 4 is my favorite number- and if we take my number 4 and your uniforms ‘04’ we get ‘404’.”
“The error message.” Dream said. “Smart- uh you’re smart-“
George laughed, “Computer science major.”
“Oh shit, me too. Maybe we’ll have some classes together.” Dream said, petting Patches as well.
“I don’t know, I took some advanced courses before coming here. That allows me to not take the base level classes.”
“Are you trying to say that you’re smarter than me, Georgie?” Dream asked and George rolled his eyes at the nickname.
“I guess I am, Dreamie.” George tossed a nickname right back and Dream huffed at it.
“I will have you know, Georgie , That I also took advanced classes and I am skipping the base level classes. So, like I said, maybe we will have some classes together.”
George just smiled fondly at the blonde, “Then we’ll have to sit together.”
“You sure you won't be distracted?” Dream asked slyly.
George narrowed his eyes, “By what?”
“You haven’t stopped looking at me since we met.” Dream pointed out and George stuttered a bit, at a loss for words.
“I have NOT been staring at you this whole time.” George said defensively, “No proof.”
Dream just laughed, “It’s okay, I think you’re attractive as well.”
George huffed and grabbed a pillow hitting him with it. Dream just smiled a wide smile at him.
They would get along great.
*
Dream didn’t expect their closeness to stem from texting and calling or simply hanging out on the daily. Karl and Sapnap were off hanging out or doing the same things.
He also wasn’t used to anyone watching his games, especially with his jacket on… but there George was, cheering him on weeks later. Their easy friendship turned into a situationship. Karl and Sapnap were dating. George and Dream felt like they could take things slow, they had forever after all.
And that’s why Dream could score the winning touchdown and run to George and take him into a sweet kiss and nothing bad would come from Gorge kissing him back.
They had forever.
*
“It’s a week of thanksgiving break.” Dream said, string at his packed suitcase by his dresser and taking note of the soft hum from his mini fridge no longer being present.
“I know, idiot. I’m not the one who begged we hang out till the last possible moment.” George said, laying his head on Dream’s lap who instantly started carding a hand through his hair.
“Let me know when you take off and land and make it home safely. I know you’re scared of flying alone so if you need anything, I’m a text or call away.”
George hummed. “I don’t want to leave you.” A breath, “You’ve become my home.” George admitted softly.
“I don’t want to leave you either.” Dream said, “If you were just a friend then it would be different. But I do love you, George.”
George sat up and looked at Dream like he didn’t hear him the right way, “Are you joking?”
“No.” Dream said. “I love you.
“I love you too.” George spoke softly and Dream smiled warmly at him, cupping his face ever so gently. They met in a soft kiss. Break wouldn’t have to be so hard when they had each other to come back to.
*
They went for ice cream their first night back.
“George, I do have a question.” Dream said suddenly and George hummed. “Would you be my boyfriend?”
“I would love to.” George said with a smile full of moon dust. The tides were gentle with their love.
“Winter break will come out of nowhere.” Dream pointed out, “that one is even longer.”
“I’ll be sad, fall is my season and it always feels like the shortest one.” George frowned, “and on top of that I will miss you.”
Dream’s soft smile offered golden rays of sunshine. “I will miss you too, baby.” He would miss George like the trees miss the fallen leaves. But the leaves come back and so will George.
Dream will await his return like the sky awaits the sun's longevity in colder weather.
Fall was George’s season, but he was still Dream’s for the winter. Where the moon shone so brightly in the night, and the tides stayed gentle. Soft waves crashing on a shore like clouds.
And George would await the sun to melt the ice filling the cold waters, so he could bask in the light in the same way he did with Dream’s smiles.
Winter had nothing on them when they waited for each other.
Till the ice melts in the spring.
The waves get bigger and slam into the shoreline in the same way the harsh greens sprouted from the brown trees. They hit so suddenly that no one was prepared for Spring’s tsunami. Especially Dream. Nothing could have prepared him for the roaring tides that his once shining moon created for them.
