Work Text:
Johnny didn't usually have trouble sleeping, but tonight was a little different; his brain refused to shut off and he found himself staring at the ceiling over the bed for hours.
So much had changed in the last five years and sometimes he couldn't help but go through all of it in his head, always at night when there was nothing else to distract him.
His band had folded.
He had started songwriting and producing full time.
He had finally grown a pair and asked his soulmate out, maybe not in the best way, but he was so glad he did.
Said soulmate had been in… a very bad place.
But he was doing so much better now, he had stopped drinking entirely and therapy had helped in ways Johnny knew he couldn't.
And… that still haunted him, how helpless he had been to help the man he loved as he spiraled downwards into despair.
But it was ok now, he reminded himself, Samy was ok, he was safe. He had learned how to tell the younger man was feeling down, when he needed space or needed to be held. Samy in turn was learning to ask for help when he needed it, and could pick up when Johnny needed to be carried for a while too.
Some days it was almost spooky, how they could almost read each other's minds.
But it made Johnny smile, the way Samy would show up to the studio with coffee, the smile that would light up his face when he would bring home Johnny's favorite pizza on a bad day. How Samy could look so sad, like the world was ending and he could hold him until his sunshine smile lit up his face again.
He would protect his Samy at all costs.
Johnny looked down at the purple-haired man sleeping peacefully with his head and an arm on his chest, his bicep decorated with their matching guitar and red microphone; he bent forward enough to kiss the top of Samy's head before laying back and closing his eyes, arms wrapped tight around him.
He would keep him safe, even if it was just from his own mind.
