Work Text:

Jazz and Danny followed the librarian who had introduced herself as Barbara.

Jazz was still nervous. They were lucky that Danny’s ghostly abilities allowed him to sense emotions and intent. Though it didn’t help when she was trying to reassure him and he could feel that she was just as scared.

She shouldn’t have broken down. She was the older sister. She was supposed to take care of him. She needed to be strong. She–

Danny nudged her hand, sending her a smile.

They had made it to Barbara’s apartment and she and Danny were sitting on the young woman’s couch while she prepared some tea.

“Here you go.” Barbara said, bringing in a tray. “Are you guys hungry? I have some leftover soup or I could throw together some sandwiches.”

“I’m good, thank you.” Jazz said.

“I’ll take anything.” Danny said.
Barbara smiled. “Do you like tomato soup?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay, I’ll heat some up.” Barbara went back to the kitchen and Jazz turned toward Danny.

“What do you think?”

“She seems okay. I think she just genuinely wants to help.”

Jazz bit her lip. “Are you sure?”

“Yeah.” Danny gently grabbed her hand. “And if she turns out to be evil, we’ll just run.”

She squeezed his hand back and gave him a small smile.

---------------------

Barbara wasn’t entirely sure how to proceed. She had taken the teens back to her apartment and had told them to spend the night and then she’d help them find tickets back home tomorrow.

But she didn’t want to send them back to what was most likely a neglectful home if not a physically abusive one.

She didn’t want to contact Bruce though. He’d just adopt them himself, and even though she’d barely met the kids she wanted to be a bigger part of their lives. Sure, she was only about five or six years older than Jazz.

Maybe she could help Jazz get emancipated and set her up with her own apartment, or they could share the apartment. That would also work that way. And that way Danny could still live with Jazz. Barbara would have to get a bigger apartment though.

But on the other hand, maybe they wanted a parent figure and having Bruce adopt them would be better. And Bruce was getting better at communicating.

She wasn’t really sure what to do, what would be best for the young teenagers in her living room.

But she was going to do her best to convince them not to leave tomorrow morning.
