Ai Di woke with a start. His heartbeat rapidly slowed to a normal rate, but his forehead was coated with a sheen of sweat, even in Chen Yi’s air-conditioned room. He reached out to the space beside him, feeling only cold sheets. Ai Di sat up in the bed, his eyes wide, looking around the dark room. A shaft of golden light was seeping in under the closed door. Ai Di could hear Chen Yi’s voice coming from outside, too, so he laid back down, taking deep breaths to calm himself. He turned over, facing the door, and tried to fall back asleep, but wasn’t very successful. Not to say he wasn’t tired— he was extremely tired, but he felt cold even under the comforter and every creak of the floor or car that drove by the window made him wince, jerking him out of any shallow sleep he slipped into. After a quarter of an hour had passed in this way, he stood up and walked to the door.
Ai Di poked his head out of their room, drowsiness shrouding him, wearing only his boxers and socks, to see Chen Yi sitting on the couch outside, having a heated discussion with someone on the phone. He shuffled over and sat down on the seat next to him, bringing his legs up so he was curled as close to Chen Yi as possible, snaking his arms around his waist and dropping his chin onto Chen Yi’s shoulder. He let his heavy eyelids fall, resting the side of his face against the curve of Chen Yi’s neck and sighing softly as he leaned into him. Chen Yi paused in his tirade against the unseen speaker over the phone as Ai Di’s soft hair brushed the side of his face and his breath tickled the side of his neck. Ai Di’s every little touch or slight movement sent a pleasurable tingle up Chen Yi’s spine. Ai Di heard the other voice begin a rebuttal and Chen Yi rolled his eyes, hanging up the line and flinging his phone to the other side of the couch. He brought a hand up to pet Ai Di’s head,
“Aren’t you cold?” Ai Di kept his eyes closed as he nodded in response. Chen Yi smiled against the top of Ai Di’s head and patted him gently on the back,
“Here, sit up for a second.” Ai Di reluctantly righted himself, putting on a display of annoyance and fatigue as he dramatically draped his body against the armrest instead. Chen Yi unzipped the sweatshirt he was wearing and took it off, then leaned Ai Di’s head against his chest and pulled Ai Di’s arms into the sweatshirt, zipping it closed. He wrapped his arms around Ai Di and laid back into the couch. Ai Di inhaled deeply and his body melted into Chen Yi’s as he relaxed again, safe and content, Chen Yi’s hands rubbing slowly up and down his back. This time, he descended with ease into a dreamless sleep.
