To Ordinary Boys

Summary:

Their reason to stay
To go on
To dream
This is what you are to them and me
Reasons for so much to so many
This and so much more

Work Text:

You weren't why I dreamed
I was doing that long before you came
But I think I may have left them
With you that day
When I threw us away
Fleeing as if I’d been burned
Before having truly understood and known
Before there was anything between you and me and us
Before giving you a chance, yours alone

(It used to be his
Used to be a way to say
What we have feels so nice
Not his now, never again his)

It was for the best, I know
I was a bad owner then
Couldn’t have cherished and nurtured them right
Would've watered them poison for tears
Screaming at them and you
Sobbing over a heartless boy
I can’t do this anymore
Can’t look back and be reminded of him
Please, no more

Then you said to me
Don’t you worry dear
Life goes on
And spring day will come
We’ll wait for you here
‘Til winter has gone
For you to come back home

Now I’m older
Finding you and dreams once more
After walking a lonely lane, there in the moor
But I sometimes wonder at night
When past demons come by
If I had stayed
Would I have still lost so much of my light?

It’s no use, I know
I have you now and you have me
That should be enough
And it is, please believe, but
Sometimes I see her in the reflection
I see and I want to yell
Why did you have to choose abandonment and rejection?
Right when life was going to hell?

Then I remember when you said
Life goes on
And spring day will come
You’ll be fine
We’ll wait for you here
‘Til winter has gone
For you to come back home

I remember and the ache abates
Perhaps not the mend or the cure
To a broken heart and weary soul
Perhaps comfort, a shoulder to lean on
Shelter in this never-ending storm
Perhaps not why I dream
Rather something nameless
Deeper than love and seas
At last, something between you and me and us
Nameless but deeper than love and seas
