Work Text:

Daffy’s thoughts stirred as he sat in his rickety trailer, he was on lunch break currently and rather than actually eat something his stomach was desperately protesting for, he was pondering what a certain rabbit had told him earlier. He knew there were better fish out there for Bugs, but there was something about the floppy-eared troublemaker. No matter how many times he’d pushed him away, how rudely he spoke to him, Bugs kept coming back.

That’s why it caught him off guard when Bugs had pulled the duck aside, and rather than tease or taunt him like usual, he stared lovingly into Daffy’s eyes with his hands drifting to the duck’s own.

“What are you doing?” he asked stunned, but the burrowing rabbit only leaned in closer and planted a soft kiss on his bill before whispering softly, “I love you Daffy.”

Of course, Daffy protested against the intimate affections, not only for his beating heart’s sake, but because they hadn’t told a soul about their relationship. And of course, that meant someone was bound to figure it out sooner or later. Daffy didn’t want this news going public. The reputation he worked so hard to earn wouldn’t be ruined by some silly secret relationship! But, he couldn’t deny his feelings for the stupid rabbit, it was driving him mad. He wanted desperately to show Bugs all of his hidden thoughts, his care and affectionate touches, his love.

Daffy wanted to tell him that no one else mattered, that the sound of his voice alone made his entire day brighter. That, at night, he dreamt of hearing Bugs whisper sweet nothings into his ear.

But Daffy had his pride, and it seemed now more important than ever to keep up his image of being a total jerk. So he reluctantly shrugged and pulled back from the rabbit’s grasp.

“I think I’m gonna go get something to eat, see ya later!” He quickly left the lot without giving the bunny a second glance.

Daffy strolled aimlessly back to his trailer, why’d he have to go and ruin everything. He fucked everything up again. Why can’t he stop fucking everything up?!

The frustrated noise came out muffled as Daffy opened the door and trudged inside. His head hit the cot as he slumped down onto it.

If only he could tell him how much he loved him. How important he was to him…

If only… He thought to himself sadly.

So here he was, tears welling up in his eyes as his whole body began shaking. Oh god he hated this, he wasn’t supposed to cry. He really should have thought about this a little more. He took a deep breath and wiped his eyes, letting it out slowly. Taking a glance at the clock on his table his eyes shot up and he ran out the trailer, lunch was over 15 minutes ago, the director was going to kill him.

Daffy was dreading going home, it was a free weekend sure, but the thought of running into Bugs only made him feel guilty and anxious. Their previous interaction replaying in his mind continuously. Looking at his clock once more, it was now two hours past work dismissal. Bugs would be worried and he didn’t want to put more pressure onto the rabbit. They both deserved a bit of time apart after what happened today. Daffy figured he could wait until tomorrow.

Besides he wasn’t exactly looking forward to seeing those sad puppy dog eyes that Bugs usually gave him whenever they “broke up”. It would probably be best if he waited another day. He could text Bugs and tell him he didn’t feel well, then he could take a shower, eat something so his stomach would shut up, and get a good nights sleep. Unfortunately for him, his plans went out the window when he walked into his apartment and saw Bugs cooking something in the kitchen.

The tired duck smiled weakly and hesitatingly walked into the room, sitting at a table.

“You decided to cook for me huh?” Daffy remarked smelling the food on the stove where he saw a carrot cake baking in the oven.

“Yeah, well I guess I was feeling generous. You haven’t eaten in awhile right?” He said while he set out some plates on the counter next to the sink.

“Well uh… yeah I guess,” Daffy replied trying to hide his nerves.

How could he act so nonchalant about their earlier exchange? Why hasn’t he run off to go find someone who could actually reciprocate their love for him. Daffy was obviously the worst person for a guy like Bugs who had it all, who was perfect and likable, charming and handsome, rich and famous. So why was he still here?

Why did he put up with this shit?

He picked up his fork and started digging in to the delicious meal Bugs cooked for him.

“Ya okay Daff? You seem a little out of it.” Bugs asked putting down his own plate and giving Daffy a concerned look.

The duck simply looked down avoiding eye contact, guilt was coursing through him and he could feel tears start to prick at his eyes. Bugs showed so much care and love to him, and he repaid it by being emotionally aloof and pathetically insecure. Not even realizing his breath was now shallow and tears were flowing down his face.

“Hey hey don’t cry, I’m sorry…I shouldn’t have forced us to say things we weren’t ready for yet. It just, it was overwhelming. I’m such an idiot,” Bugs blurted out, his hand moving atop the duck’s own feathered one. Daffy slightly flinched at the soft touch, eventually putting his hand under the rabbit’s.

Bugs slowly lifted himself and walked over to the emotionally unstable duck, picking him up in bridal carry. Daffy immediately threw his arms around the rabbit’s neck and dug his face into the furry soft chest resuming his sobs.

Bugs walked to the closest couch and held the traumatized duck in his arms, gently rubbing his back and murmuring soft soothing words into his ears. His soft lips brushing along Daffy’s hair line, making him shiver slightly and relax. He rested his chin on the top of the duck’s head, petting and stroking his back.

As Daffy’s sobs turned to quiet whimpers, Bugs lifted the duck’s chin to face him. Daffy’s face was streaked with tears, puffy red eyes and water soaked feathers, yet he still managed to give the rabbit one hell of a puppy dog look. He rubbed his thumb across Daffy’s cheek tenderly.

“I’m sorry Bugsth, you’re so perfect and I-I can’t even tell you how much I like you…”, Daffy spoke, his voice cracking near the end.

“No I-I mean, I…I really, I mean…”

“Shhh, it’s alright Daffy, don’t worry about it, it’s ok, I understand. I know you really love me too”, the rabbit replied endearingly.

“Oh…”, Daffy whispered blushing and looking away shyly.

Bugs pulled him closer to him and pressed a soft kiss against his forehead. Bugs stared longingly into Daffy’s eyes once more and slowly closed the gap between them. When their lips finally met, Daffy let out a sigh of relief as warmth radiated throughout his entire body.

He wrapped his arms tightly around the rabbit’s waist, his eyes falling closed and he kissed back passionately.

For several moments the two lovers stayed locked together in each other’s embrace, before Daffy pulled back, panting and smiling wide.

“Thank you Bugsy…for everything…” he said fondly.

“Anytime”, the rabbit replied teasingly.

A newfound comfort surrounded the air as they resumed cuddling. Daffy was still astounded as to how well Bugs knew him, and it was obvious to him that Bugs knew that they had something special between them, that they both cared deeply for each other.

Daffy really did love him…
