Chapter 1: session zero

Chapter Text

Most DnD tables start their campaigns with a session zero, where the dungeon master(DM/GM) can establish the tone and premise of the campaign, help the palyers make their charachters and, if they are lucky, have time to actually play the game.

' it's probably not a good idea, they would make fun of me'

Good grief, I'm really getting sick of reading Kaidou's thoughts today. The chuunibyou found a new thing to get excited about, he clearly wanted to introduce it to Saiki and Nendo but couldn’t gather the courage to do so.

'but it would be so COOL! People online make it sound amazing… and it's not like you could play it alone'

Saiki flinched as Kaidou's thoughts moved to imagine them on some grand fantasy adventure. It was annoying enough to hear his thoughts on a normal day, with the dissonance between Kaidou's outward behavior and his inner thoughts- this new idea of running a dungeons and dragons campaign for Saiki and some of the other nuances has gotten his thoughts jumbled up jumping from excited to anxiety and vice versa for hours and giving Saiki a serious headache.

It's about time I do something about it. the sooner he gives up this stupid idea the sooner we return to the status quo- I just hope that’s not the start of an arc or a long term fanfic or something. Saiki gave a quick scan to the classroom and those present, looks like Kaidou brought one of the game's source books. perfect.

'I should probably start with Saiki, Nendo will probably make fun of me if I start from him… I hope he will be okay with playing, with how little he talks normally. I was hoping to get someone else to run the game but it prob-' Kaidou's train of thoughts stopped abruptly as he tripped on his bag (he could swear it wasn’t here a moment ago), spilling the contents. the Player's Handbook he brought to show Saiki settling…. Right at Nendo's legs.

'ohnono'

Come on... take the bait…

Nendo bended down and picked up the book "Hey chibi!" he shouted "is that one of your neeerdy books?" good, Kaidou will probably back down from the whole thing after Nendo will mock him for a bit.

Kaidou's voice rose a few octaves "Ummm nnooo ittsss uhhh" he stopped for a moment to take back control of his voice and fake a small smug smile "actually it’s a super cool secret thing I was considering showing you- but you’re probably too stupid to appreciate it".

Nendo gave a small laugh and said mockingly "Yeah? And what sooo cool and seeecret about it?"

"W-well you see its it’s a super cool game where we can kill goblins and rob houses and save princesses but it's better than video games because you can do anything because it's played by talking and role playing around a table and rolling dice to determine results and it has rules and I think you really enjoy it an –" Kaidou's voice trailed off as he realized what he was saying.

'that was the worst pitch anyone has ever made for any roll playing game EVER there is no way they would want to play with me.' saiki hid a smirk. Well, sorry Kaidou, perhaps your next idea might work out better- try choosing something that involves less talking.

Nendo studied Kaidou's face in silent for a few seconds "I didn’t understand a word from what you just said, but I can see this is important to you, so I will join your super secret thing".

'say what now?'

Say WHAT now??

Nendo gave Kaidou a huge grin "But only if MY PAL SAIKI JOINS US!" oh dear "OI PARTNER! COME LISTEN TO KAIDOU SUPER SECRET THING!"

Kaidou joined Nendo next to Saiki "No need to shout dumbass! He is right next to you." He looked at Saiki with an excited look "so? Will you join us to a game of dungeon and dragons this Wednesday?"

What a pain, my telepathy will give me spoilers for everything anyway and my powers gives me unfair advantages but I can't tell them that… Saiki smiled internally as She entered the classroom, with her usual wave of noise. I guess it's time for plan B.

What? You thought I only had one solution that relied on Nendo? Don’t make me laugh.

Sorry, I already have plans. He shook his head and pointed at Teruhashi.

Kaidou looked to where he was pointing as he talked "What you can't joi-Oh wow Teruhashi! Haha I guess you already have plans with her?" Kaidou deflated a little as Saiki nodded.

I actually do have plans with her. She cornered me into an English project… and she promised me sweets.

What? It was fair trade.

At this point Teruhashi and Chiyo joined them and settled at the table next to Saiki "So… what are you boys talking about?" Teruhashi said with a warm smile.

Kaidou jumped a little at the sudden attention "oh uh we were talking about starting a dungeons and dragons campaign… though I'm not free most of the week with my cram school.. and Saiki said he has plans with you on Wednesday"

Teruhashi hid her surprise as best as she could. wow.. I mean so much to him he would even give up a chance to hang up with Kaidou and Nendo.. I'm sure the sweets had nothing to do with it'

'and yet…' Teruhashi glanced at Chiyo, the brunette had perked up at the mention of d&d, and tried to hide it as best as she could.

"A d&d campaign?" Chiyo asked, visibly excited "I read about it online! It’s supposed to be so fun! Do you mind if me and Kokomi join you? I’m sure you and Saiki can move your plan to another day..?" 'please Koko.. a d&d campaign with Kaidou? Don’t ruin it for me...'. Chiyo gave Teruhashi the biggest puppy eyes she could muster.

"well I guess it couldn’t hurt.. Kaidou could you explain to me how the game works? I'm sure Chiyo could use a refresher" the satisfaction Teruhashi saw on those two's faces was more than enough to snuff the frustration from the missed date 'well I’ll get him next time.. and I would be spending time with him at the game so that’s something' Teruhashi tried her best to get a good grasp of the rules from Kaidou's explanation 'Saiki is kind of a nerd.. maybe he will be impressed if I show a good understanding of the rules'.

I wouldn't count on it.

The psychic watched the four of them, Kaidou struggling to make the game sound cool, Nendo not really understanding what's going on, Chiyo with a dreamy expression and Teruhashi looking focused.

Well time for plan C. I was hoping to avoid that one.

Saiki waited a few minutes into Kaidou's explanation and then he walked up to him and tapped on his shoulder.

"huh? What is it Saiki? Do you have a question?"

"can I play as the GM instead?"

"huh!? Are you serious??" 'I didn’t think Saiki would want to play the main role of the game… I would feel bad throwing all this work at him but…'

Come on, I can read your mind I know you wanna.

"wwell if you really want to you can use the notes I made for the first session! Here, and have the rule books I brought!" Kaidou piled a folder and a bunch of books on his table, "and I can meet up with the rest and show them the secrets of character creation…" Kaidou tried to give a dramatic tone to a process that probably involved a bunch of reading and dice rolling. I'm really glad I dodged that bullet.

You are probably wondering why I made that offer to him. Well you see, as the GM I will have complete control over the flow of the game.

I will make it the most boring game of d&d the world has ever seen; the group will start seeking excuses to avoid my games until the campaign dissolves.

It’s bound to work.
