Work Text:

Aja awoke to a tapping sound. It sounded like something was pelting Mother. She jumped out of her bed and grabbed her Serrator off her bed stand, glancing around the room for bounty hunters.

No one was there, she walked around her room for a second looking around for any bounty hunters that could be hiding from her. Nothing.

Aja cautiously stepped out of her room, Serrator blade still in hand.

“Aja it’s okay,” Krel said, coming out from around the corner. She jumped and almost stabbed him.

“What is the pounding on Mother then? If it’s okay?” She said making air quotes with one of her hands.

“It’s called rain,” Krel said, pulling out a tablet. “It’s this strange Earth phenomenon where the sky leaks water.”

“So it’s not bounty hunters?” Aja asked, lowering her Serrator only slightly.

“No, in fact I believe it’s harmless,” Krel said, still looking at his tablet.

Aja walked into the living room and took her first glance outside, the normally bright outside was now gray and wet.

“Morning Aja,” the mother robot said, making pancakes. Her eye twitched slightly and she dropped a plate.

Aja ran over to help her. “Are you okay?”

“Yes I just seem to be a little under the weather from the weather,” the robot said, in a more robotic voice than usual.

“Varvatos Vex doesn’t understand why the robots are malfunctioning,” Varvatos said from his spot on the couch.

“Oh the water and humidity are probably damaging their systems,” Krel said walking into the room still on his tablet.

“What does the king in training suggest Varvatos Vex do with the robots then?” he said standing up.

“Just put them in a cool dry place until it stops raining,” Krel said, sitting down on the couch.

Aja sat down next to him and tried to read over his shoulder. He shoved her away. “Go find something to entertain you, I'm busy.”

She draped herself over Krel and said dramatically, “but I’m bored and the robots are gone.”

“Then why don’t you go do something like take Luug on a walk.”

Aja glanced over at the dog which was currently in his corgi form. He lay on his bed dead asleep snoring loudly.

“I don’t think he wants to go on a walk.”

“Fine I’ll find you something to do,” Krel clicked a few buttons on his tablet. “Here you can go run around outside, you can do a puzzle, read a book. Anything but be here while I’m concentrating.”

“You can play in the rain?” Aja asked, eyes full of wonder.

“I don’t know, this website said to get a rain jacket and boots and you can get as wet as you want.”

“Mother, where are the rain jackets?” she asked, looking up at the ceiling. Almost immediately the house responded by forming a matching yellow rain jacket and boots.

“Krel, are you sure you don’t want to come out with me?” She asked, stepping out of the house.

“No, I want to work.”

She sighed and ran out of the house.

“Varvatos Vex wants to know how long the king in training has been on his computer,” Varatos asked, walking back into the living room an hour later.

“I don’t know,” Krel said, he was currently looking at some ways to improve mother and make the ship regenerate Mama and Papa faster. Not that it would help. This planet was so primitive that anything he found that would help was off the planet.

“Varvatos Vex thinks the king in training should try touching some grass.”

“Where did you even learn that phrase?” Krel asked, rolling his eyes. It was something Eli told him frequently when he was getting too upset at something a teacher or other classmate would say.

“Varvatos Vex learned it while watching cute cat videos,” Varvatos said. “And I believe you should join the queen in training, in doing that.”

“Why I don’t need to,” Krel said, not looking up from his tablet.

“Varvatos Vex is done with this attitude,” he took the tablet from Krel’s hands and threw it aside.

“Hey, that's fragile.”

“So is the king in training, so he should go outside and get fresh air.”

Krel rolled his eyes. “Fine. Mother please give me rain clothing.” Without another word, he trudged outside ignoring Varvatos’s smug look.

“What are you even doing?” he asked as Aja ran around the yard splashing in puddles.

“Trying to get as wet as I can,” she said. Her jeans were positively soaked but everything under her rain jacket and boots were totally dry. “It’s fun you should try.”

“Yes and act like an animal, I suppose that’s something you learned from that blond meat brain?”

“No I made this game up myself,” Aja said, taking his hand and dragging her through the puddles.

“Stop my hair’s going to get wet.”

“Like this,” Aja dipped her hand into the rain gutter and dunked Krel’s head with water.

Krel yelled for a moment, the water was cold and splashed in his face and eyes. But he took a breath and ran back to Aja.

“Oh you’re on,” he said, grinning and doing the same to her. She shrieked and ran away again.

They kept like this until they were both breathless on the front steps. Varvatos refused to let the two in, saying they would mess up Mother with all the water they would let in, so they sat and waited for the rain to stop pouring.

“Aren’t you glad you got off your computer for once?” Aja asked.

Krel smiled, “yeah this was fun.” he paused then said “but I swear if you sick Varvatos on me again I will beat the living flem out of you.”

She grinned, “how do you know that was me?”

He punched her in the arm and grinned.
