“What did you think when you first saw me?” Davis asked Ken. They were watching some dumb Netflix show and Davis wasn’t paying attention. Neither was Ken but it hadn’t been him who suggested they watch tv.
“I was utterly confused,” Ken stated bluntly. He was scrolling on his phone and wasn’t really paying attention.
“What?” Davis asked, he plopped himself into Ken’s lap making him lower his phone and look into Davis’s brown eyes. Ken absentmindedly switched off the tv. “Shouldn’t it be something like love at first sight, or a strong emotional attraction.”
Ken laughed, “I don’t think the Digimon emperor would fall for some dumb kid on the soccer field just because he tackles me.”
“Oh shit I forgot about that,” Davis said, his head now laying in Ken’s lap.
Ken flinched, the Digimon Emperor was the thing he hated the most about himself. Over the years he had learned to forgive himself but that didn’t mean he would ever enjoy remembering that part of his life.
“I think it was your fashion sense,” Ken said, ruffling Davis’s hair.
“You loved my fashion sense back then,” Davis said. “I was hot stuff back then. Tai gave me those goggles and I had every person attracted to men coming to my door asking for a date.”
“I was literally the only date you had back then,” Ken said, shaking his head.
“Yeah but Kari would have totally asked me out if TK hadn’t been around.”
“Lucky me I guess.”
“But really, you were confused when you saw me?”
Ken laughed. “Yea, I mean no one had ever beaten my ultimate move like that in soccer, much less managed to cut me. I was so arrogant back then that I grew to resent you very quickly.”
“Looking back on it I had the smallest crush on you back then,” Davis said blushing. Ken raised an eyebrow. “Yea, me and Yolei like to joke you were my bi awakening.”
“You definitely were not my first crush.”
“Oh but I was your first friend crush right?” Davis asked, poking one of his cheeks.
Ken laughed. “You didn't know any of my friends before I became one of the DigiDestined.”
“You didn’t have friends back then.”
“Not true. I was friends with everyone on the soccer team.”
“I thought the Digimon emperor didn’t have friends.”
Ken rolled his eyes. “What about you, what did you first think when you met me for the first time?”
“Admiration,” Davis said, his eyes twinkling. “I had seen you on the news before but I didn’t know what you were like in person. I was a little smitten. If you ask Kari she’ll say I talked about you for a week.”
“TK told me it was a month.”
“Who believes anything TW says?”
“So you had a crush on me?”
“Yeah pretty much. It stopped after we found out you were the Digimon emperor. But as you were trying to get better, the crush came back. When did your crush develop on me?”
Ken thought back to that time. It had been nearly a decade ago. His anxiety had been so bad back then. But he could still remember how Davis was that light in the dark for him. He was the one to keep him grounded in those days.
“I think it was when you gave me a second chance,” Ken said. “You were the only person on the team that thought I could change.”
“Well I saw how you were treating Wormmon and defending the other digimon, and I knew you weren’t the same person.”
“You saw what even I couldn’t see.”
Davis smiled at him. “I remember when you asked me out that first time.”
“What, we were fifteen?”
“How do you not remember the exact date?” Davis said, sitting up and waving his arms around dramatically. “You’re not the person I thought I was dating.”
“Was it October?”
“No you asked me out January, thirteen, Friday, 2003,” Davis said self assuredly. “At lunch, which would have been around noon.”
“You’re a sap,” Ken said leaning closer.
“If you want to have sex can we at least get to our bed. I’d rather not on the couch again. I think the person across the street is watching us because she can’t afford Yaoi.”
Ken jerked away. “Davis, you didn’t have to tell me that. I feel so violated.” he ran over to the window and shut the curtains.
“So do you want to do it?”
“No,” Ken said immediately. He fell back onto the couch landing on Davis. He let out a little yelp and shoved him off.
“Oh you’re on,” Davis said, grabbing a pillow and bashing him in the head.
And that’s how their peaceful evening ended with an all out Pillow war, waking all their neighbors.
