Grateful

Summary:

In the aftermath being tortured, Hanawa is in a lot of pain but tries to hide it.

Notes:

Prompt: “I’m ok”

I've reached chapter 3 of this game and I love Hanawa. I had to write something about the whump he goes through in canon.

Work Text:

As they wait for the Daidoji agents to arrive to pick up Tsuruno, Hanawa does his best to hide how much pain he's in. He holds his arm against his chest to keep his sprained wrist still, taking slow breaths through gritted teeth as bruises throb all over his body. His head pounds after taking multiple fists to the face, and even taking a breath pulls at his bruised ribs. But he doesn't complain - remembering the instruments of torture the Omi men laid on the table beside him, he knows he got off lightly. But Hanawa fears what those assholes would have done to him if Kiryu never showed up.

Speaking of Kiryu, the man in question flexes his fingers, grunting as he pulls his bruised knuckles. He fought his way through dozens of armed men all to rescue Hanawa. He still can't believe that Kiryu went to such an effort to save him.

"Do you need anything?" Kiryu asks, his eyes scanning Hanawa for injuries. (A pointless thing to do, because other than his face, all his injuries ended up hidden by his shirt. Still, he appreciates the concern.) "I could get you a chair."

"I'm ok," he says, irritated when his voice comes out a little shaky. "I can stand."

Kiryu gives him a look that seems to mean, 'if you say so', clearly not believing his lie (the way Hanawa sways on his feet should also be a big giveaway of how awful he feels), but he doesn't argue.

"But thank you, Joryu," Hanawa adds, thanking his friend for more than just the offer of assistance.

"Don't worry about it," Kiryu says, and something tells Hanawa that Kiryu isn't just talking about finding him a chair either.

Hanawa tries to smile, his sore lip making the action painful and turning his expression into a grimace. But can't help it, no matter how strange he must look pulling a weird expression with blood all over his face. How can he not smile after being rescued by Kiryu? Everyone else would have left him to die, but not Kiryu. He saved Hanawa's life.

And he will always be grateful.
