Walk Down With You (Instead of a Lonely Road)

Notes:

Did you know that the word 'instead' means 'as a substitute' or 'an alternative'? It also comes from way back when royalty or other very important people in the government or hierarchy would send people to conventions or minor parties as their substitute. Basically being that they are there 'in their stead'. Just thought that was cool.

Chapter Text

Hawks- No, Keigo- Hawks is bad, bad, bad pain hurtbadpainpainpaINPAIN- used to be under the impression that Endeavor was an amazing hero. He was so cool, saving people left and right, capturing villains and assorted criminals. In his eyes, Endeavor was a god who could do no wrong.

How naive...

Keigo sees it from everyone else's point of view now, though. That despite the fact his quirk made him unbearably warm, he was so, so, so cold. Fuck...everything hurts. His feathers are wilted and burnt from the number one's anger being spent on them. He can't feel much, but what he can burns, stings and aches. Sobs wrack his body and he scoots numbly to the corner of the dead-end alleyway.

He felt so dirty, the alley was gross, grimy, and he could see mud and dirt on his pants and shriveled bomber jacket. He felt around his pants, fumbled with his phone, and eventually dialed a number, hopefully Dabi's. Was he confident in his voice? No. Was he confident that whatever pained chirps, mumbles, and whimpers he could choke out would get his boyfriend to track his location? Yes, yes the fuck he was. A beep that signified the call being answered.

He chirped into the mic pathetically and winced at his burns.

"Pretty bird?"

DABI! It was Dabi's voice! He did it, he called the right number!!

"D-Dabi!" Chirp, coo "Da-abi help.." He was so tired, his voice was raspy. Why was he this tired? "Hurts...Burns hurt...Feathers...tir-red..."

"Keigo? What's going on, where are you?" There was shuffling on the other side of the line. "Hold on, Kei. I'll find you, I just need to know where you are."

He had wasted his voice, however, and could now only produce pained chirps and warbles. There was clicking on the other line. Typing, his mind supplied. Dabi was coming! He was coming to get him! To save him!

"It's okay, pretty bird." Dabi said softly. "I'm getting your location, Dove. I'm coming to get you, don't worry. You're gonna be safe soon."

Keigo cooed and warbled into the mic at his comforting words.

"There...I got your location, baby bird, I'm coming right now." A portal opened up right next to him as Dabi hung up. "Oh, my gods...what have they done to you?"

Keigo trilled and wrapped his arms around Dabi's neck. Finally feeling safe, he drifted off as Dabi walked with him through the portal.

When Keigo woke up, he was in a nest. Not just any nest, however. This was the nest that the League had surprised him with after a particularly rough patrol. He shivered as the memories from the previous day came back to him. He sat up and Dabi's coat slid down his body. He looked down to see that he'd been changed. No longer was he wearing his tattered, burned khaki pants, khaki jacket, and black and gold bodysuit. Instead, he was wearing a long, over sized white pajama button down and black biker shorts. He was also freezing to the point of his teeth chattering, though it might have been from his attire.

He was also clean. He blushed at the fact that he was bathed, either with a rag or in a tub, while he was knocked out.

Another thing he noticed was that his was patched up from head to toe. Wings. Fuck, his wings, where-

And then he saw them...

His beautiful wings, if you could even call them that anymore, were half gone. The few feathers that were still hanging on were there by a thread. Each on burned and crimped and broken. He cooed sadly at the damage. Hopefully, he ran his fingers through them. Nothing. No vibrations or feeling in his feathers. He would have to pluck his wings and re-grow them, leaving him grounded and defenseless for at the very least two months. Not to mention ugly, featherless wings for a week before his soft, downy feathers grew in.

He stood up and felt like he weighed a million pounds, the cold feeling multiplying. He stumbled to the closet and grabbed a thick sweater, putting it on and walking down to the main room. Everyone's eyes turned to him and it felt like the suffocating room finally had oxygen. Everyone looked relieved and happy to see him on his feet. Dabi barreled to him, somehow hugging the life out of him and not hurting him at all, despite his plethora of injuries.

Keigo trilled at the touch, hugging him back. Toga came over and hugged him from behind, setting the tone for everyone else. Somehow, Keigo didn't know, they had found themselves on the nest-like couch, snuggled around him.

Dabi had laid Keigo on himself, stomach to pelvis with Keigo's head resting on his boyfriend's chest, while his heavenly hands drifted lazily around the base of Keigo's wings. Shigaraki was laying on Dabi's left, playing with his hair while Toga lounged herself on Shigaraki, simply snuggling his side. Spinner's claws, also laying on Shigaraki, preened and stroked his left wing while Twice and Compress did the same on his right side.

He started purring. He couldn't help it, being loved felt so good. He was warm, clean, and comfortable, surrounded by the people who make him happy. He heard several muffled giggles at the purring and Toga openly 'awed'.

"Hey...guys?"

Seven hums could be heard in answer.

"Could you call me...Keigo and not H-Hawks?"

"Sure, baby bird."

"Alrighty! Keigo is so much better than that bullshit the HPSC gave you!"

"Okay, Kei-chan!!"

"Yeah, sure, whatever, bird boy."

"You got it, Keigo."

"That is far more fitting for you, Keigo."

His purrs got louder and he snuggled into their little couch puddle. Everyone lay in their cuddle puddle until the next morning

Keigo felt like shit when he woke up. He had to be sick, there was no other explanation. With what, though? There were few things it could be. The sat up and stretched, body vibrating with it. While his back snapped, crackled, and popped like a glowstick, his wings(?) arched over him. Several feathers fluttered down, out of his control.

Oh..OH. He's molting. That's why he feels like he has the flu and common cold. Shit. This isn't going to be fun at. All.

Chapter 2

Notes:

Sub/quirk drop warning. Nothing sexual, but if it isn't for you, you may skip this chapter; it's mostly a filler anyway.

Chapter Text

Keigo was not happy. Molting is shit and it made him feel as though he was being dunked into lava and ice cold water, one after the other in a loop. This coupled with the fact that he had reason to believe the next stage was his instincts taking over his body, well, it didn’t paint a very pretty picture in his head.

He stumbled to the bathroom and took out the med kit, snatching the ibuprofen from the kit and glared at it as though it had insulted his mate. He filled up one of the disposable paper cups with water and took two of the reddish-orange pills. He downed the rest of the water, shuddered, and (with the grace of a newborn fawn) hobbled out into the kitchen to get some food.

He opened the fridge and his eyes zeroed in on the meat drawer. He ripped it open and snatched one of the rib eye steaks that had ‘Keigo’ written in elegant Kanji on the plastic wrap. He tossed a skillet on the stove and turned it on, putting some butter in it and waiting impatiently for it to melt and bubble.

Once it had, he put the steak on the piping hot pan and seared it nice and dark, making sure the inside was warm as well. He took it off when it was done and plated it, taking it to the table. Scarfing it down, Keigo looks around. Everyone was gone and on the microwave was a sticky note.

‘Hey, Kei.
We all went out shopping.
Be back @2pm, love you.
-Touya’

He smiled and folded the note up, sticking it in his pocket. He rinsed the plate off and limped to his and Touya’s room, shutting the door and turning off the light. He flopped on the bed and made a mediocre nest with the comforter and multitude of pillows. He spent five minutes getting snacks and drinks that would keep him hydrated and about fifteen more fussing over his nest until it was fluffy and perfect.

He turned off the main lights and closed the blackout curtains, opting for the very soft glow of LED fairy lights strung up around his room and little glow-in-the-dark galaxy ceiling stickers above his head. He tossed his snacks into a basket and organized his drinks in his mini-fridges, setting the snack basket on top of it.

He had Sprite, nutrition shakes, Sparkling Ice, individual milk bottles, and apple juice. His snacks were simple and had little to no effort attached; apple sauce pouches, soft boiled eggs, grilled chicken, and mochi, all refrigerated or frozen, while the snacks in his basket were beef jerky, dried venison, smoked turkey bacon, and a huge container of goldfish. His second mini-fridge had no freezer, but was filled to the brim with water bottles and on top was a box of hydro-packets.

He sighed happily and plopped himself into the nest, and as he feels the Drop coming on, he lets out a rumbling purr while his pupils blow wide and innocent.

Chapter Text

Dabi knew that Keigo being off of his Commission-sanctioned suppressants would do something big. He did not, contrary to popular belief, expect it to be as big as a growling ball of bird. Dabi was always in one of two places; Exiled from the nest or confined to the nest. There was no in between. Today, the end of the first week of Keigo's molting, as Spinner had dubbed it, he was in the former situation. Allowed anywhere but the nest and forced to sleep on the couch left him in a foul mood, only wanting to cuddle with his mate and being refused it made him cranky and irresponsible. So, he decided that he would do something drastic and flashy to win back his mate.

He was going to kidnap Kei's little UA bird baby.

Dabi sat in his spacious van, a block away from the school and on the direct route that little Tokoyami Fumikage takes home from school. He turned off the car's engine when his alarm for the end of school day went off.

It was dark, even at 4:30 in Japan's chilly mid-October, the sun had already set behind the towering buildings of east Musutafu, and, though it might be difficult for him to see, the little black hawk that was Tokoyami might not have that same issue. He would have to take precautions. Pulling out a dart gun, he loaded into it one of the temporary quirk disabling bullets they're stolen from the Shie Hassaikai.

Dabi looked out of the tinted window to see a tired-looking Tokoyami walking down the sidewalk. He shook his head in silent laughter, knowing now, in the state the young student was in, that he might not even need the bullet. He took a closer look at the young boy, and it seemed that their quirk had mutated. He no longer had the face of a bird, now he had a slightly angular human face with sharp eyes. He also had cute little wings fluttered as he talked with his small demon.

He set the gun down and, when the little bird was obliviously in front of the open door, darted out to pin Tokoyami's arms to his sides with one arm and keeping his head down and covering his eyes with the other. They let out distressed chirps and warbles, trying to fight off Dabi, but to no avail, and settled for jerking his head this way and that to get his hand of of their eyes.

Dabi shushed him, trying to lull him into a calm sense of security that would force his overworking little brain to calm down. "It's okay, Tokoyami, I'm not gonna hurt you." He started humming.

"L-let me go- Please-" Their voice cracked on the last word, hiccuping."I won't say anything, p-please-"

"Shh, sh-shh, I can't do that, little bird, calm down." Dabi soothed, starting backwards, stepping in the van and shutting the door. "I already said I wasn't gonna hurtcha, so just relax and enjoy the ride."

He slipped the blindfold over Tokoyami's terrified eyes, tying his wrists, ankles, and knees. Dabi petted Tokoyami's hair for a moment, running his fingers through the soft plumes of feathers dusted throughout his hair; quite similar to Keigo. They shivered, letting out a dry sob.

"Please...." He begged.

Dabi felt bad, so bad. But it would make both of them happy. Keigo has wanted to see his little mentee, his baby, for ages and Dabi knew that Tokoyami had been going out every night to see if he could find his mentor, his mama bird, even going through the rough patches of Musutafu and all over their district to look for him.

"It's okay, chickadee, you wand Kei are gonna be so happy to see each other, you might even forgive me..." He hopped up to the front of the van and turned the key in the ignition, starting up the vehicle and driving away. "I hope you can forgive me."

And he swears he hears the little bird chirp, "Mama Kei?"

When Dabi pulled into the alley, turning off the van, he noticed the little hawk in the backseat had drifted off. He sighed and sprayed a medical mask with diluted chloroform, even if he was sleeping now, the chick might not stay that way. He slipped the medical mask onto Tokoyami's face and picked him up after a minute, being gentle and mindful of where every part of the student was going.

He set the knocked out teen on the couch and removed his restraints and blindfold, deciding that he would remove the mask right before he left Keigo's room. He picked Tokoyami up and walked to his boyfriend's room. Peeking in, he saw that the bedroom was empty and the dim purple LED light strips on the mirror int he bathroom were on.

He walked further in, carefully taking off the mask covering the baby bird's face off. When he heard the toilet flush, sink turn on, and saw Tokoyami stir, he hopped on out of there, shutting the door with a nearly silent snap.

As Fumikage woke up, he became aware that was being cuddled and nuzzled by a purring.....thing. He turned and saw his mama mentor snuggled up to him, preening the tiny, three foot wings that were gradually growing on his back while also running delicate hands through his hair.

He chirped in surprise when he realized where he potentially was and tried to stand up, but failed as mama Hawks pulled them back into his lap and snuck a piece of grilled chicken into the teen's mouth. He chewed and swallowed, eliciting a please parental coo from mama the hero.

Fumi warbled back instinctively, shivering and purring when Keigo's the hero's mama's nimble fingers massaged their way through the hair and feathers at the base of his neck; turning him into a ball of fluff. No hero student here, only a purring puddle.

There was a soft, abrupt knock on the door and a somehow rough and soft male voice that snapped Fumikage out of his reverie.

"Kei? Are you and the little birdy awake?" The man-Dabi- asked.

Before they could stop him, mama cooed in confirmation, and the door swung open to reveal Dabi with some clothes in his arms. He walked in and toed off his shoes before coming into the nest, staying a respectful distance away from the black hawk.

He handed off some of the clothes to mama, who started weaving them into the nest before going to the bathroom to change. Once Fumi was sure that they were alone his turned to glare at Dabi, who sighed, slumping.

"Okay, birdy, I see that you're angry-with good reason-but could you please hear me out before attacking me or something?" Dabi sounded genuine, and Fumi hated that he felt a little bad.

"Fine, but I wanna know why I'm here, why ma- Keigo is here, and why the hell he's acting so weird." Fumi snapped, but it held little fire. "And I wanna hear it now, so start talking."

"Okay," Dabi conceded. "Keigo was a child soldier for the commission and they had him sent on this stupid mission to infiltrate us, the league. He saw it for what it was, a suicide mission. The president thought that I would incinerate him on sight and if I didn't and he got to the point of meeting Shigaraki, he would die then. He caved after the tenth meeting, obviously I already knew and everyone at base one picked it up along the way."

A breath. Silence.

"Anyway, he was on evening patrol and some shitty F rank villain tried to rob a convenience store along his patrol route, which happened to cross with Endeavor's route." His voice was bitter, like talking about something infuriating and disgusting. "Endeavor, as per usual, blew it way out of proportion and started shooting fire everywhere, trying to kill the assailant. Keigo tried to stop him, and doubled down after the moron lit the store on fire, which had a shit tone of civilians inside. He didn't even stop after the cops had him in cuffs, kept trying to annihilate this petty criminal."

"He got even more pissed off after the guy was in the car because Kei was blocking his way. So he started a fight with him, and blasted him into an alley and walked off. Kei called me as soon as he could and when I got there, he was barely lucid." Dabi looked resigned. "After I brought him here he started molting and shit and is in this mama bird head space that we can't break him out of. I thought that bringing you here would get him into a mood where he felt safe and he would finally let me back into our room, but it might take a while."

"Wait..." Fumi's eyes widened and he whisper-shouted: "Are you mated to my ma-mentor?!"
