Chosen began to preen them, fixing each feather carefully as he did. He dug his talons into the very roots to unsheathe the pin feathers from the base, shredding the hard, grey-blue tubes with deft ministrations. It felt like peeling bark, or scraping dry paint. However, when the soft fluff of the feathers underneath revealed themselves, a bright crimson instead of the usual dirty maroon, it made up for the unpleasant sensations entirely.

Purple had only taken off her elytra for a few days. Just a few days.
But her back itched.
Mango Orange was almost 40 years old and very knowledgeable, but even he could not tell you why he found a trail of dusty feathers in his living room at 7 A.M.
An hour, two cups of coffee, and a relatively okay breakfast later, he was finally ready to investigate it.
Green opened the trapdoor and called out with one long clarinet note.
... He didn't get a response. They called again, verging a few steps into the house proper. This time, a noise in the silence of the rooms.

Or: What happens when you come to rely on something with otherworldly origins too much, and it decides its code would be much better off merged with yours. After all, it was once living as well, and if you use it so much, surely having it as a permanent fixture in your life would be more of a boon than a curse.
It's only a shame that the process is so painful.
Maybe less of a shame that the people around you love you enough to help, though.

He's risking it all, taking a few steps closer, but it lets him see something he hadn't seen before. Wilbur finally acknowledges him, eyes darting up to his face and staring right through him. His whole body shuffles closer to the plant, almost protectively, yet he still manages to flash a somewhat casual smile.
"What's it to you? Everyone keeps telling me to get a hobby. I figured you'd be thrilled."
Quackity laughs, even though it's not funny. "Thrilled? You practically live in your own garden. When's the last time you ate? Or slept?"
The smile drops. Wilbur's stare grows more intense, and only then does Quackity realize his pupils are blown wide as saucers.
"Don't need any of that. I barely feel it."
His face is flushed, too. Quackity didn't flag it as unusual, at first—Wilbur always gets heated when they argue—but this is something else. It's almost...
No. That's not possible.
