Ilya’s gaze traveled over him, slow and deliberate, tracing the pale lines of his collarbone, the curve of his shoulders, lingering where the shift left skin bare. “You look very pretty today,” he murmured, his voice a soft hiss, tinged with both amusement and intent. “Is just for me?”Shane swallowed, forcing his expression calm. “It is custom,” he said, though his fingers tightened on the necklace beneath his shift.
Ilya’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smile. “Hmm. I look forward to chasing you,” he said, but then he grabbed Shane’s hand and kissed it, his fangs leaving little indents on his skin. “But I cannot wait to catch you.”

“I don’t want to,” Hollander says so quickly it makes Ilya’s stomach drop. “Half the league is in this hotel. Can I just stay?”
Shane and Ilya start sleeping over. It still takes them years to figure everything out.

It started with a handshake at the world juniors hockey competition when they were younger, now Shane and Ilya are happily out, married and playing on the same hockey team in Ottawa. Everything has been going well for them, until Shane gets another invite like he does annually to attend his high school reunion which he has been actively avoiding for good reason.
Apparently those reasons had yet to be explained to Ilya, who may have accidently, on purpose already RSVP'd to the invite......on a personal email address......which ends up going public because of someone on the reunion committee having a vendetta against Shane Hollander.

Summary
The team goes out afterward and drags Shane with them. He has to, objectively. It's a running tally in his head all the time: if I leave dinner thirty minutes early, I owe a night out. If I skip a night out, I owe brunch the next away game. The season is still young, and Shane wants to rack up his social savings before he gets truly tired and has to beg out of more than two things in a row. His phone buzzes in his pocket as he shrugs on his coat. They're going out in their pregame clothes, men with harsh faces and sharp bodies that know they look good because they are wearing money. Money makes the most broken nose look sexy in a violent sort of way, and the evening has an undercurrent of violence running through it from the start.
The game was choppy, fast, mostly due to Shane and Ilya pushing the pace past what anyone was conditioned for this early in the season, and his teammates make him pay for it in chirps that cut a little. Shane doesn't mind it too much. He can handle the chirps about the hockey. That's a reflection of himself that is good and clean and known. He can't handle the ones directed at the unknown part of himself that swirls in his chest and bites back.
