Jake woke up slowly, feeling safe and warm. There was a dull pain in his back, along with a new weight, but he was too tired to consider it much. Actually, speaking of tired, Jake wanted to go back to sleep.
His ears itched. And his throat hurt. And he wanted water. And, damnit, now he couldn't sleep.
He groaned in annoyance.
There was a soft trill next to him.
'Awake calm?'
Jake wanted to reply, but his throat felt weird. He needed water, still. But it felt different, like-

Derek’s blood turned to ice in his veins, and he sat on his bed, frozen for a few moments. Sparing a quick glance at Dex, who was still fully immersed in his coding, Derek minimized his thesis.
On his desktop there were four folders, one for each of the MFA programs he applied to. In each one he stored copies of his applications, writing samples, and recommendation letters. The folders were sorted in alphabetical order. Brown. Columbia. Emerson. Johns Hopkins.
Providence. New York. Boston. Baltimore.

For once, Dex wakes from sleep slowly. There’s no blaring alarm, no pounding of feet from the kitchen above him as the rest of the Haus wakes up. No practice or class or shift or anything to run off to – just a slow float to the surface. It’s positively lazy in a way that he never allows himself normally and Dex ruthlessly pushes aside the faint guilt that threatens to rise and lets himself bask in the cozy atmosphere. The air is chilly where it meets the exposed skin of his face. He goes to burrow further into the comforter, stilling and then smiling when he meets sleep-warm skin instead of bedding.
