Summary
Camilla Dormer never really thought she’d be happy. Happy is not expected for a woman of her station. She is only supposed to be comfortable, content. But she wants it, feels it like a clamoring under her ribs. She reaches for it in the bed of a handsome sailor, an act that leads to her undoing when her love letters fall into the hands of the sadistic ship captain.
After a brief adultery trial, with both her lover and her husband consenting to the execution, Camilla is dropped into the sea, and meant to drown.
She does. Or it’s close enough, until through the panic and breathlessness, her hands go to her neck, scratching, tearing skin, severing tendons, trying to force herself alive, force nonexistent air into her lungs.
She comes to at the bottom of the ocean, frantic, confused, and not alone.
