Art Process:
I claimed this prompt on Nov 26.
I wanted to do a Lucifer!Sam and Michael!Dean kiss because I'm side art project I had been working on before claiming was arting a Lucifer Fem!Sam. So, it was on my mind and I decided to just go with it.
Dec 3rd I got this much sketched out:
I didn't want to do anything too complicated because I was worried I'd never complete anything otherwise. And I didn't want to care too much about composition because I'd loose motivation fast. So, I just slap down placement that vaguely made sense. *sigh* But, I always underestimate how hard it is to draw Dean/Jensen. Plus, I don't have a lot of practice drawing kisses. So trying to figure where Dean's lips should end and Sam's should begin took some time.
Dec 6th:
I was still not happy with my sketch of Dean here. But I kept looking at the Micheal!Dean screenshots I took from episodes 14x02 and 14x10, I kept reworking the stokes in the sketch, and eventually I was able to figure out some line work that I was happy with for Dean.
Initially arting Sam felt the easiest, because I feel so much more confident drawing Sam's face than Dean's. But then I started having trouble because I didn't know how the form of Sam's head, neck, and torso should interact with the pillow elevating Sam's head. At this point in the process I had been using a mixture of refs mainly from 5x04 (for lucifer!sam's suite) and 9x05 (for a side profile of Sam passed out)
9x05 only has Sam laid out flat out on the floor. So I ended up going back to google to search Sam sleeping in a bed.
Dec 8th:
I ended up not to use the line tool for line art.
I did try to, but I ended up losing some of the line thickness that I liked in the sketch. So I scrapped that linework layer. Then I took the sketch layer and lowered the luminosity all the way till the sketch turned completely black. And then I started cleaning it up. Erasing the sketchy multi strokes and remaking it into one clean stroke.
And I believe it was sometime after this wip shot that I found out through google that 9x01 has Sam's head elevated on a pillow from the side perspective. So I went to that episode on Netflix and started screenshoting refs. And it wasn't exactly what I needed, because the hospital bed was also elevated along with the pillow, but it was close enough that my brain could fill in the blanks.
With that issue out of the way, the next issue that cropped up was figuring out the suits shapes and clothing folds. I couldn't find a ref from the show that was bright enough to show distinct enough shapes and crinkles for Dean's suit in that position. So, I googled men in suits and actually couldn't find anything that really helped but I think the lines that ended up with were good enough.
In 5x04 Lucifer!Sam turns around to say, "Pardon?" to Dean or something and if I slowed the scene down enough I can pause Jared at the right frame for a side view of his suit. Again this isn't exactly what I needed, because gravity isn't pushing the suit down against his chest unlike if Sam was laying down. It's pushing the clothing to hang off his torso and arms, if that makes sense.
So I went to google and I found pics of guys in suits reclined in the drivers seat of a car. Again not exactly what I needed, but combining this information with the show ref's information, I was able to make strokes that I was satisfied with.
Dec 10th:
I finished the main lineart. I did use the lineart tool to make the circles and the top parts of the window, but the rest of the background's straight lines was made from the box selection tool and fill tool.
The diagonal lines made on altar's boarder was made through a series of steps. First I made two straight lines with the selection tool and fill tool. Then I copied and pasted these lines. After I got the pattern to fill the length of the canvas I used the deformed to widen the bottom of the content to cause the image to spread out. Which gives the coffins boarder more of a depth than just straight lines.
After this I made more layers on top of this lineart so I could add the Christmas decorations. I ended up going a slightly different path with the flowers surrounding Sam's head. I moved them to the bottom of the pillow and I added roses and pine leaves instead of keeping it just holly. I did keep the original idea for the hanging mistletoe.
Dec 11th:
I made five different layers for color. I started with the outside blue-purple gradient background. Then I made a layer for the small dots for snow with a light blue that I upped the brightness on and then lowered the layer's opacity. On top of those layers I added a layer to fill in the walls with black and the window borders with a dark grey.
Afterwards I made a color layer for the flora and another one for the alter and characters. Once all the base colors were decided on the flowers, altar, and figures I added a shade and overlay layers on top of the color layers to add the night atmosphere.
I ended up loosing detail of the lineart because of how dark it is, but I'm good with it. I also didn't add shading to the characters, because I didn't think it had to have it and I wanted to move on.
And then that's it.
