“You look happy,” Teyla says, taking a seat across from John at the mess hall.
“I know people are upset that the SGC is replacing Elizabeth so quickly, but let’s just say that they’re making the best of a bad situation,” John responds. While he knows that Teyla won’t judge, he’s never actually explicitly told anyone about his relationship, so he’s not entirely sure what to say.
“I noticed that you and Colonel Mitchell do have a rapport when he was here,” Teyla responds. “How long have you been together?”
John’s eyes widen in surprise, as he thought his years of hiding would have won out over his friend’s perceptiveness. “Since our first year at the Academy, so almost twenty years,” he responds. “Please tell me we’re not that obvious.”
“You have no need to worry about your military regulations,” Teyla assures him. “I was merely following a hunch with my question.”
“Stargate Command has been turning a blind eye to some of the military’s more problematic regulations for years, both because civilians and foreign nationals are part of the program and because almost every other civilization we’ve encountered is far more progressive,” John explains. “Though we still have to be careful that we don’t get reported outside the SGC. Everyone loves Cam, but I’ve made a few enemies over the years.”
“Hopefully soon you’ll be able to be open about your relationship,” Teyla responds. “In the meantime, you and the Colonel won’t need to hide when around my people. Or the rest of our team,” she adds, giving him a pointed look, and John knows that he needs to have conversations with Ronon and Rodney, which he is not looking forward to.
