The sunset reflected off the glittering pond in the park as Himiko and Ochako wound along a dirt path with their arms interlocked.
Himiko snuggly wrapped the red scarf she had bought for Ochako after their first month of dating around her neck. Entangling Ochako's hair around her fingers, Himiko wistfully stared at the shadows dancing beneath the willow in the park.
Maybe Himiko was greedy, but she desperately wanted all these little moments with Ochako to be hers and her alone, forever.
Licking her lips in satisfaction, Himiko could still taste the hearty beef stew with blood-rich broth at the restaurant Ochako had taken her to that evening.
Ochako never made grand declarations of wanting to be Himiko or giggling every time she stepped into the room. But she showed she cared in the ways that mattered. She'd press Himiko's hand tight when she got her blood drawn at the hospital and never questioned why Himiko was only squeamish about seeing her own blood extracted. Ochako would pick pomegranate seeds out of the hardened magenta shells because she knew how much Himiko loved the tart fruit but packed the patience to fish out the seeds herself.
Patting the pocket of her pink winter jacket, Himiko felt around for a small cubical box. Her plans for when to propose had always been tentative at best, but part of her knew that she would recognize the right moment when it was there.
Shutting her eyes in anticipation, Himiko slowly opened the box as she got down on her knee. But when she opened her eyes she found that Ochako’s pose was her mirror image. A box with a ring decked with a brilliant red gemstone lay in Ochako's hands. As Himiko’s heart raced, Ochako's eyes widened with realization.
Shellshocked, neither of the two spoke the same question they held on their tongues aloud. Regardless, the unspoken I do, hung heavily in the icy evening air.
Enamored, Ochako stared at the pink diamond Himiko placed on her finger, and practically in sync she slipped the red diamond onto Himiko's hand.
Himiko held the deep maroon stone up to the sky, marveling over how it shone beneath the light. “How did you get this?”
“My UA friends.” Ochako then beamed and gestured toward the pink diamond. “And you?”
“Dabi.” Paling with realization of what the situation looked like on the outside, Himiko started to frantically wave her arms in front of herself. “But I promise that the gem wasn't stolen. Honest!”
“I believe you.” Smiling, Ochako placed a delicate kiss on Himiko's cheek that made every nerve in Himiko's body crackle to life.
“We have pretty amazing friends, don't we?” Himiko asked. She stepped close to Ochako and entangled their palms so that the pink diamond clinked against the deep red one.
“Absolutely!” Ochako leaned against Himiko's shoulder as she stared out toward the embers of the setting sun.
“And I'm sure they'll be there every step of the way when we start our new life together.”
