The snow was covering every surface of Las Vistas. Despite the cold, the sun was high up in the sky, although it would go down in only a few hours.
The Oak children were putting jackets and shoes on faster than ever, as if their lives were on the line. They would be in just a moment. It was the perfect temperature to make snowballs - and that meant that it was time for a snowball fight.
Kipo and Wolf had made one team, and Benson and Dave were on the other team. Mandu, who couldn't pick up snow by herself, was a self-made judge. She would make sure that they followed the rules of the game. Nobody was allowed to catch snowballs on someone's face, or add ice or rocks into the snowballs.
Dressed and ready to spend the afternoon attacking each other, the Oak children walked out of the house. Kipo and Wolf built a small wall out of snow to protect themselves from their brothers, while Benson and Dave settled on hiding behind trees and house walls. They weren't afraid of some snow.
As soon as each team had their own walls of protection, they started picking up snow and forming them into balls as fast as they could. Benson and Dave were already experts. During the Dave vs the Fanatics war, they would use the snow as a weapon to fight each other.
While Kipo and Wolf were clearly the stronger ones in the bunch, they were not as familiar with snowball fights as Benson and Dave. Kipo had never touched snow before then, and Wolf hadn't gotten to have fun in the snow as a survivor. She would use her own weapons to protect herself.
Therefore, the odds were pretty even.
Mandu took her spot on the stairs in front of the house, squealing to let each team know that they were allowed to start.
They grabbed their snowballs and aimed towards the other team. Kipo aimed for Benson, Benson aimed for Wolf, Wolf aimed for Dave and Dave aimed for Kipo. Kipo threw her snowball first, using her jaguar strength to hit him in the chest. She cheered in victory, but was interrupted when Mandu squealed angrily at her.
She had broken a rule. Since she was the only one with special abilities, she was not allowed to use them in the game. As punishment, she had to let Benson throw a snowball at her.
She stood still as she recieved her punishment, the snowball hitting her shoulder. She didn't have the time to register what happened before another snowball was thrown at her, this time from Dave. It hit her in the stomach, causing her to stumble back.
While he was distracted, Wolf threw her snowball at him, grinning as he was hit and fell backwards from the force.
"Hey!" he called out angrily.
Wolf stuck her tongue out at him, grinning before getting down on her knees to grab more snow. Dave copied her, wanting to hit her as well just to get revenge. He had just made a snowball when his eyesight was partially blinded from the snow that came straight at his face with full force. He had been hit again. By Wolf.
She laughed at his dumbfounded face as he turned towards her. She had always wanted to do something like that, although she had never imagined throwing snow at him before. Mandu squealed again, this time at Wolf for hitting him in the face. It was against the rules.
Wolf groaned in annoyance, knowing that she had to let Dave hit her. She glared at him as he aimed at her before throwing the snowball at her. He caught her in the stomach, the force big enough to catch her off balance before falling to the ground onto her back. Dave and Benson cheered, high-fiving.
"Can't you two win without breaking the rules?" Benson teased.
Kipo and Wolf exchanged a glance before grinning at each other.
"Come on, Wolf. Let's show them what we're made of!" Kipo said and Wolf nodded.
For the next half an hour, the two teams went back and forth. In total, Wolf and Kipo broke the rules five times while Benson and Dave only broke them twice.
Benson and Dave ended up winning the game, for the first time ever. Song was the one to interrupt the game to let her kids know that they had to come back inside before it would get colder. The temperature had already started to drop and the sun was moving downwards.
She had made four cups of hot chocolate for the four of them, as well as a bag with cheese for Mandu, and lit a fire in the fireplace. They sat down in front of the fire, enjoying the warmth it brought to their cold bodies. Song handed them their chocolates, watching them drink.
Kipo loved hot chocolate. Lio used to make them when she lived in the burrow. Benson and Dave were only slightly familiar with it. It was a rare treat to get hot chocolate on the surface, but they loved it. Except for eating a chocolate box as a child, Wolf had never had chocolate before, especially not hot chocolate. She ended up liking it and emptied the entire cup before setting it down beside her to watch the flames in front of her.
The Oak children talked about their snowball fight, exchanging ideas for the next time they would do it. They laughed and joked together, just like the siblings they were.
And although they loved each other dearly, they couldn't wait for the next opportunity to throw snow into each other's faces.
