Sterile White Room (Me and You)

Summary:

A rewriting of Hira waking up in the hospital, and what happened before

Notes:

This is a short one, sorry! I just had the idea while re-watching the movie and wanted to get it out! I hope that you enjoy!

Please note that this does deal with the canon themes of kidnapping, violence, and blood from the movie, albeit very light and mild. Still, please take care of yourself

There is also a scene that can technically be considered a form of self harm, which is the shower scene, so please be cautious and skip it if needed, because it doesn't really add that much to the story

Please take care of yourself, and thank you for reading

Work Text:

Kiyoi feels numb as he sits beside Hira’s bed, watching him closely, waiting for him to wake up and hyper-focusing on the beeping noise filling the air, telling him the other’s heart rate — telling him that it was still beating

His hands are still stained red where they sit in his lap, blood drying over his skin, having rushed straight to the hospital as soon as he could get away from his manager, needing to get to Hira and make sure that he was okay

He was being examined when Kiyoi got there, and they wouldn’t tell him anything, no matter how much he pleaded and cried, until he finally relented to the lobby to wait for an update

Sometime after he arrived, the hospital must have called the police. Or maybe they were called before, when the paramedics arrived

How did they know to get there?-

Kiyoi was taken to one of the empty rooms, interrogated for what felt like forever about what happened, telling them everything that he could. It admittedly wasn’t much in terms of usefulness, because he didn’t know the strangers name, but it seemed to be enough as the police quickly left

At some point, while he was back to waiting in the lobby, Anna and Kiriya arrived, making an immediate beeline over as soon as they saw him, Anna’s eyes widening at the blood coating his hands as she sat beside him

They were talking to him, he realized belatedly, but the words sounded fuzzy, Kiyoi unable to process much around him

At least until the doors leading to where they had taken Hira opened

Everything snapped back into razor sharp focus as he heard the doctor call his name, quickly rushing over as his skin buzzed, Anna following him and standing at his side with a reassuring hand on his back as they awaited the news-

“Mr. Hira is going to be fine. He has a concussion, but there are otherwise no issues. We will be keeping him for monitoring” The doctor says, and Kiyoi feels his heart stop in relief, the exact same moment that the blanket of numbness had washed over him

Anna and Kiriya had walked him to Hira’s room, staying for a little bit before they had to leave, Anna wrapping him in a tight side hug, placing a gentle kiss to the top of his head that made him feel a little better, a little more comforted and secure

He watched as Kiriya waved him goodbye, not seeming to mind his lack of response, before wrapping an arm around Anna’s waist and steering her out of the room, door sliding shut behind them

That was hours ago, Kiyoi thinks, everything feeling like a blur to him as he tried to will Hira to just wake up already

He had hit his head when he fell

It’s what one of the nurses told him when they came to check on the other male. Hira had hit his head, and he had gotten a concussion, one that shouldn’t cause him any problems but that they were monitoring anyway, just in case, and they would let him know when Hira was cleared to leave

Just as soon as he woke up

That’s all he has to do, is wake up. Why hasn’t he woken up?

Despite the doctors' and nurses' tellings of what happened, Kiyoi can’t tame the ball of anxiety inside of him, the one that had formed when he saw the blood on Hira, scared that the stranger had taken him from him

He can’t help but remember their fight, when he left Hira’s — their house, and didn’t see him again until Anna and Kiriya’s reunion

It all feels so stupid now; how he had reacted, making everything worse with his short, ill temper. It had felt so huge at the time, and he had been so hurt, but he can’t even remember why now under the fear of almost losing Hira again, this time forever-

Hira had hit his head

There were no puncture wounds on him, no sign that the knife had even managed to graze his skin. He was going to be fine

Hira is fine-

Kiyoi jumps as a hand settles on his shoulder, quickly jerking away from the touch. “Ah, sorry Kiyoi-kun” Naho whispers, Kiyoi slowly settling down a little, continuing to try and will Hira to wake up-

“Kiyoi! You’re hurt!” Tomoya’s worried shout brings him back to reality a little, right in enough time to jerk his blood covered hands away from the kid as he rushes over, trying to give him a reassuring smile

“Ah, I’m fine. It was for a project at work” He lies, forcing a playful lilt to his voice as Naho gently pulls Tomoya away a little

“Why don’t you go home and get cleaned up, Kiyoi-kun? We can stay here and look after Kazu-kun” She suggests, and Kiyoi feels like all of his nerves have suddenly been lit on fire, hating the sting of tears that prick his eyes as he shakes his head

“Kiyoi-kun, he isn’t going to be awake for a while. Go get cleaned and rest some, I will call you if he wakes up before you return” Naho insists, Kiyoi’s cheeks burning as tears streak down them — whether from the tears themselves or embarrassment he doesn’t know, thinks that it might be both

“I want to stay with him” He whispers, hating the way that his voice breaks, Naho giving him a sad smile

“You need to take care of yourself too, Kiyoi-kun. At least go clean up. You wouldn’t want Kazu-kun to see you and panic, hm?”

It’s a dirty card to play, and Naho knows it if her slightly apologetic smile is anything to go by, but it has the intended effect; getting Kiyoi to move out of his chair, sending one last look back at Hira before he leaves

It feels like his chest has split open, and the feeling only gets worse the further that he gets from the hospital

Kiyoi barely gets into the house before he crumbles to the floor, painful sobs wracking his body as the events of the day finally hit him — as the fear finally hits him; not just from almost losing Hira, from thinking he did, but from him getting kidnapped and hurt, almost getting stabbed-

Kiyoi doesn’t know how long it is before he manages to pull himself off the floor and into the bathroom, avoiding the mirror so that he doesn’t have to see how pathetic he looks

“A rookie actor who has nothing but a pretty face”

Kiyoi shudders at the echo of the stranger's words in his head, quickly trying to distract himself with a shower, setting the water temperature to one that is probably too hot — that Hira would freak out over him using on himself — before stripping and stepping in

He winces at the initial sting of the water’s burn, before that blanket of numbness drapes back over him and he can tune it out, furiously scrubbing at his skin to try and erase the past twenty-four hours-

Kiyoi’s lost all sense of time again, jumping as his phone rings, hissing as he’s brought back to reality and feels the now ice cold water cascading over him, quickly getting out and drying off before pulling on his and Hira’s shared hoodie and a pair of the other male’s baggy pajama pants

He almost trips getting to his phone, cursing himself for leaving it at the entryway, hurrying to answer the call from Hira’s number-

“Kazu-kun woke up”

The world slowly fades into view as Hira wakes up, the scene around him, though blurry, unfamiliar

His vision has just cleared, and his eyes have just managed to open more than a sliver, when loud footsteps hurry towards him. “Kazu-kun!”

Hira feels beyond disoriented as he looks around the room. “Naho-chan” He mumbles, looking down at the covers and shirt he was in, before up at the wall behind the bed he was lying in, adorned with various medical equipment. “How did I get here?” He asks

“You bumped your head when you fell” Naho informs him, the events of the last few hours flashing through his head, panic lighting up inside of him

“Oh, where is Kiyoi?” He asks, trying to sit up in the bed, because he doesn’t see the other male in the room, and he doesn’t know what happened to him, can only remember his screams and sobs, and he needs to make sure that he’s okay-

“Don’t worry. He’s fine” Naho gently soothes him, stopping him from moving any further, Hira slowly settling back down onto the bed. “Just stay here and rest” His cousin adds, waiting until she’s sure that he won’t try and get up again to settle into the seat beside his bed, Tomoya moving to sit beside her

“Kiyoi-kun has been here keeping you company” Naho informs him with a smile, one that quickly falls, sparking Hira’s worry and panic all over again for a moment. “That person…The attacker is alive. He stabbed himself by accident during the fight. The whole thing was kind of ridiculous” She adds

For a moment, Hira isn’t sure whether or not he’s glad that Shitara isn’t dead, taking a small deep breath as he looks up at the ceiling. “I see” He mumbles

His cousin takes a deep breath of her own, before she’s smiling at him again. “Kazu-kun, you and Kiyoi don’t have to move” She says, Hira’s brows furrowing a little

“What?” He asks, watching Naho as she smiles down at Tomoya, the younger boy turning to her as she places a hand on his back

“We’ll find another place to live. You should stay with Kiyoi-kun”

“Naho-chan” Hira isn’t sure if there’s anything else that he’s trying to say, feels like there should be, Naho’s smile turning a little sad

“After you were hurt, Kiyoi-kun kept crying…and said he wanted to stay with you” She tells him, and Hira’s worry for his boyfriend spikes all over again at the news, upset over the thought of Kiyoi crying without Hira there to comfort him

“Kiyoi kept saying that” Tomoya speaks up, Hira quickly looking over. “I asked him if you were his friend. He said you weren’t but someone who meant so much more than a friend to him” The young boy adds, Hira taking an unsteady deep breath, gaze trailing to the table beside the bed

Captain Duck sits there, a note propped up to his front, ‘Come back home soon’ in Kiyoi’s neat handwriting, Hira smiling a little as he looks up at the ceiling

His attention is almost immediately drawn away by running footsteps reaching the room, eyes widening a little when he sees Kiyoi in the doorway. His own eyes are wide, and he looks frantic, dressed in pajamas with water dripping from his hair, staining their hoodie

Naho turns towards him, smiling softly as she stands, directing Tomoya to do the same. “We’ll leave you be” She says, Kiyoi barely watching them as they leave enough to move out of their way, before his gaze is right back on Hira

It’s then that he notices the sheen of tears there, his heart feeling like it breaks. “Kiyoi” He whispers, eyes widening even more at the sob that breaks free from his boyfriend’s mouth, before he’s suddenly rushing forwards, cupping both of Hira’s cheeks in his hands and leaning over him and the bed to pull him into a kiss

It feels desperate in a way that it never has before; not like before Hira takes him to bed, or the ones they have shared after being apart a little too long for their liking

No, this one is alight with fear and the need to be close just for closeness sake, Hira slowly coming out of his shock enough to kiss back, eyes slipping closed as his hand reaches up to cup the back of Kiyoi’s neck

It feels so right when Kiyoi melts into the touch, letting a soft sigh out into Hira’s mouth that he quickly swallows down, pulling the other male onto the bed with him so that they’re closer — and so that Kiyoi doesn’t hurt his neck kissing him

They’re both breathing heavily as the kiss breaks, Kiyoi’s hands remaining on Hira’s cheeks as tears cascade down his own. “I thought I lost you” He whispers, sounding absolutely terrified. It shocks Hira, because he’s never heard Kiyoi like this before. “I thought I lost you, Kazu. Please don’t scare me like that again” He adds, the sentence coming out as one big, pained whimper

Hira pulls him as close to his own body as he can, running a hand through his hair before he trails it down to wipe away his tears, Kiyoi smiling sadly as he lets out an odd little mix between a laugh and a sob, hand reaching up to cup his own as he leans into the touch, nuzzling into it like a kitten

Hira pulls their hands away, towards him, pressing a gentle kiss to the inside of Kiyoi’s wrist, feeling his pulse thrumming underneath his lips, Kiyoi making that sound again as he watches him

“I promise” Hira whispers
