Chapter Text
This had been a stupid idea. Not that he hadn’t predicted this right from the beginning. Okay, he hadn’t seen this coming, but he’d already presumed that their whole plan wouldn’t work out and would end in some kind of chaos.
How could it have been any different? Sneaking undercover in an exclusive club. They were basically asking for trouble. And this trouble was on their way to them in this exact moment, in the form of two henchmen belonging to the shady man they were investigating.
Get in, find out who he was meeting with and get out. Perfectly simple, except someone had apparently informed him that there were some unbidden guests here tonight. These men were here to find and eliminate them, there was no doubt in that.
Toby supressed a curse. Of course something like that had to happen. As if the evening weren’t already weird enough. He’d already had a bad feeling when they’d found out in which club their subject would meet their possible accomplice tonight. Exclusive, with a lot of security and not really the most confidence-inspiring clientele. Oh, did he mention it was a gay club? Of course it was, out of all things and of course that’s why their choice regarding who would do the undercover mission had been a very quick one.
Going to a gay club with the man he had feelings for wasn’t exactly what Toby would choose to do on a Friday evening. Or ever. Not when Walter knew nothing about how he felt and Toby was very sure that his feelings weren’t reciprocated.
That they were both dressed up in a way a club like this demanded, also didn’t help. It was hard enough to concentrate on their plan and not think too hard about the environment they were in, without having to block out how insanely hot Walter looked with his shirt unbuttoned almost half the way down and these way too well-fitting pants.
But all of this had just become a lot less significant, in the light of these two henchmen looking for them. At least, Toby thought, he’d had the opportunity to see Walters ass in pants like this, if he should die today. The thought didn’t really improve how he was feeling.
He cast a subtle glance to Walter who was standing next to him, eyes darting nervously across the crowded room, searching for a way out. He tried to hide his nervousness but of course Toby could see right through it.
This wouldn’t do. They would be spotted if they didn’t do anything to disappear in the crowd and it didn’t need a doctor title in psychiatry to see that. They couldn’t exactly just run, or even just try to leave casually, as this would certainly catch these men’s attention.
From the corner of his eye Toby could see them getting closer, his heart skipping a beat. They were running out of time. Walter seemed to have the same thought, because now he turned to him, that determined look in his eyes he always had when he just came up with a plan. But there was also something different underneath it, something Toby couldn’t quite identify. But before he could try to analyse it, Walter raised his voice, quiet, just loud enough that Toby could hear him over the music and the noise of the people around them.
“Kiss me.”
For one second Toby was certain that he must’ve misheard Walter, that maybe the music had distorted his words, because surely, that couldn’t be what he just said.
“W-what?!”, he responded, probably looking as bewildered as he felt right now. Distantly, he heard Cabe’s voice coming from the small earphone he wore – or was it Sylvester’s? Both? – but he didn’t understand what he was saying, too focused on Walter who was still looking at him like that.
“You said it yourself, public displays of affection make people uncomfortable, make them look away. Besides, they won’t be looking for a couple when they’re searching for us. Now do it!”
Toby could feel his heart racing in his chest and he knew it wasn’t just from the sudden danger of the situation they were in. Walter couldn’t mean that. He was right, of course, but they couldn’t.. Just like this..
“But-“, he started, but was cut off by a pair of lips pressing against his. From one moment to the next Toby forgot how to breathe. The world around them stuttered to a halt. Walters lips were soft against his, soft and a little insecure and Toby’s eyes fluttered shut as he slowly responded. He felt the wall they’d been standing close to in his back as Walter ever so gently pressed him against it and he felt something coming undone in his chest. It was like a flutter, warm and light and it drew a soft sigh from Toby’s lips that got lost in the music. Walter’s scent in his nose made him feel dizzy, as did the feeling of his hands, one laying on his cheek, the other on his side where they sparked a tingly, hot feeling.
He didn’t know for how long they’d been kissing when they slowly parted again. Toby opened his eyes, meeting Walter’s just inches away from his own. He felt like he was in a trance, not being able to move, to do anything but look into Walters eyes.
A few heartbeats later, Cabe’s loud voice roughly pushed them back into reality. From one second to the next, the moment was over. The music and the noise of the people around them came crashing back into existence and with it the situation they were in. Hastily, they moved away from each other, looking anywhere but the others face.
“Walter! Toby! Are you okay?” Cabe’s voice sounded from their earphones again, seeming truly worried now.
Walter was the first one to catch himself.
“Yes, we’re okay. They’re gone.”, he told Cabe and the rest of the team.
“Good, then get the hell out of there. Now!”
“On our way.” Walter confirmed.
For a brief moment, their gazes met again and Toby tried to get a clue about what Walter was thinking. But all he could see was that he was feeling just as awkward and embarrassed as himself. In an agitated movement, Walter ran his fingers through his hair, cleared his throat. He clearly avoided his gaze.
“I think the exit’s this way.” Walter nodded towards a point beyond the crowd and led the way, only for Toby to follow him two seconds later, his heart still racing in his chest.
