Summary
In which reflections are forced, and in which Sole buries the dead.

Sole has lost his wife and his son and all the familiarity he ever knew.
At first it threatens to swallow him whole, the strangeness of it all. His first step out of the vault, the recognition of death ghosting around the mangled trees, with leaves brittle and grey if present at all. It’s dusty out, and Sole can feel it coat his lungs, can feel an itch settling in his throat. He breathes out punched out, warm, white clouds of air into the startled morning chill, and he shivers under the pretense of the weather.
