Steve takes a deep breath, staring at the gaping hole stretching out across the road, bright red shining through. He reaches out to his left, grabbing Robin’s hand as she inches closer to him, latching to him tightly. His eyes flash over to hers, wide and full of terror. Her words from last time echo in his mind. ‘ It might not work out for us this time.’
How close they’d come to that being true. How they almost lost Max.
Eddie…
Steve’s other hand whips out to his right, his head turning to follow, searching for the deep brown he’s fallen so quickly into. His hand lands in Eddie’s, eyes locking on each other as they hold on tightly. And they don’t need to say it. Not really. They already know. Steve can see it in his eyes. Knows his reflect the same. And it’s crazy. Because it hasn’t been long, really. Barely a year since they met in that boat house. And a good portion of that was filled with running for their lives, and fighting, and Eddie laying in a bed, hanging onto life by a thread. But it’s there, all the same.
Steve takes a deep breath, leaning in closer to Eddie, feels Robin shift, pulled in where Steve still grips her hand, refuses to let go. He presses his forehead to Eddie’s, trying, just for a moment to ignore the world crumbling around them. “ I love you, Eds.”
