Chapter Text

Azula walks towards the entrance to the War Room, she heard that Zuzu had gotten to sit in on the last War meeting so she decided that since he got to do it than she will be welcomed with open arms

After all she was vastly superior to her worthless brother, she walked through the curtain and took a seat close to her father who sat on the throne, nobody really greeted her but she didn't mine after a while one General Bujing stood up to propose a battle plan

"The Earth Kingdom's defenses are concentrated here, a dangerous battalion of their strongest earthbenders and fiercest warriors so I am recommended the 41st division" "But the 41st is entirely new recruits how do you expect them to defeat a powerful Earth Kingdom battalion?" a nearby admiral asked, Bujing smiled evilly and replied "I don't, they'll be used as a distraction while we mount an attack from the rear, what better to use as a distraction than fresh meat"

Azula scoffed

Bujing looked at Azula "Something you wish to say princess?"

"Well, your plan is incredibly stupid, you honestly think a bunch of rookies can distract a entire battalion and it's a waste of resour-" before Azula could continue the fire than hide her father's face rose and the Fire Lord spoke "AZULA, silence yourself" Azula smiled at Bujing and looked to her father "Yes father" "Azula you have disrespected General Bujing, there is only one way to settle this, Agni Kai" Azula looked at Bujing than to her father "I accept the challenge father" "Good I expect nothing less from you dear daughter"

after the meeting Azula went to her room to get ready for the Agni Kai, but than her dummy of a brother bursted in "Azula, what were you thinking?" "What do you mean Zuzu?"

"You insulted a general and father said you need to settle it in an Agni Kai, what were you thinking" "Well dum dum, the general's plan was stupid and I can surely take him in my sleep" "Bu-" "I, don't, want, to hear, your pathetic worrying Zuzu, get out" "Fine" Zuko stormed out of her room and didn't even try to warn her

Azula kneeled with the shawl on her as she wanted for Bujing to arrive and for the gong to ring, she will surely win, the gong went, Azula stood up and turned around with a wide smile of her face

but her smile fell when she saw who her opponent was

her father, Fire Lord Ozai

"F-Father?"

"Fight Azula, you accepted the challenge"

Azula weakly shot some blue fire balls towards her father as he slowly made his way towards her eventually he was standing right in front of her, Azula got on her knees and began to beg for her father's forgiveness "Father please, I-I meant no disrespect, please forgive me"

"You wish for a different punishment?" Ozai asked as he looked down at his daughter who looked up at her father's face "Y-Y-Yes, yes I am your loyal servant father"

"You will learn respect, and suffering will be your teacher"

Azula became very afraid when her father grabbed her by her throat with one arm and formed a ball of fire in the other, Zuko who sat in the crowd with his Uncle Iroh and his friends Ty Lee and Mai looked at the scene in fear, he closed his eyes and looked away as his little sister screamed out in agony

Azula's face hurt as she came to, she looked around to see she was in her room, she tried to sit up only for a pair of soft hands to stop her "Princess, don't move so much"

"W-Who are you, what happened to me?" "I'm a doctor, you have been severally hurt during your Agni Kai with your father" Azula laid on her bed the doctor left to inform the Fire Lord, Azula starred at the ceiling, her father had injured her, she expected this kind of treatment from her mother, but from her father of all people

the door to her room slammed open "AZULA" of course it was Zuko "Azula are you okay?" "O-Of course I am dear brother, that's why I have this Band-Aid on my face" "Well I was in the throne room with Father and Uncle when we got news that you were Awake, and dad has issued your new punishment"

Azula looked at her brother "What is it?" what Zuko said broke Azula's world entirely

"You are to banished from the Fire Nation until you find the Avatar"

"W-What, b-b-but the Avatar hasn't been seen in 100 years, how am I suppose to find him?" "I don't know but look on the bright side, he must think you are capable if he's giving it to you"

"Get out"

"Azul-" "GET OUT" Zuko bowed his head and closed his eyes as he made his way out the door leaving Azula in the bed as she silently cried, her father the one person she looked up to, her mother didn't love her, did he love her, if he was willingly to banish her until she accomplish an impossible mission, maybe not

the door to her room started to open, she could make out the voices of Ty Lee and Mai, her friends trying to get in but Zuko didn't let them in saying "She needs time" her door closed before anyone could come in, she really wanted her friends to come in, she needed them

Zuko walked past the entrance of the War Room as everyone was leaving the meeting, the last one he went to was pretty stressful so he decided to skip this one for now, but than he heard something he couldn't help listening to

"My Lord you wish for me to fight your daughter in an Agni Kai?" "No, Azula needs to be taught a lesson in respect, I will be fighting her" Zuko froze, his father would fight Azula, in an Agni Kai, he had to tell her, despite the way she had treated him, he couldn't just let her not know about this

he ran to her room and barged in and tried to tell her but all she did was kick him out of her room

he went to the Agni Kai chamber to watch, he sat next to his uncle Iroh and his sisters friends Mai and Ty Lee, "Zuko is it true that your sister is fighting in this Agni Kai?" Ty Lee asked "Uh yah, yah it's true" Mai looked as blank as ever "At least something is actually happening nowadays" Zuko couldn't find the strength to tell them the truth about who his sister would be fighting

Azula entered the chamber and took a kneel "Prince Zuko, are you okay?" Iroh asked "Well, it's just that the person Azula is going to fac-" a wave as gasps through the crowd Zuko and Iroh looked to the other side of the chamber to see Ozai entering and taking a kneel

the Agni Kai started and Zuko saw the look of fear on Azula's face and how she tried to fight before she got on her knees and Ozai stood right in front of her

than he grabbed her by her throat and held her up, he formed a fire ball in his hand, Zuko's eyes widened as he realized what was about to happen, he closed his eyes and turned the other cheek as his sister screamed out in agony as his father burned her

"Let me in" Zuko tried to get in to his sisters room but the doctor refused to let him in, but his sister was hurt he couldn't just do nothing, eventually he got in and saw his sister laying on her bed with a band-aid on her right eye "Prince Zuko, please your sister needs space for her to recover" his uncle came from behind and guided him out of her room as the doctor went back to attend to his sister

"Uncle, she my sister I can't just not care about her" "I understand your concern, but the doctor knows what's best now come, my brother seems to want an audience with us" Zuko froze, his father want him, what did he want with him.

before he knew it he was in the throne room with his uncle and brother "So brother what do you want with us?" "I've called you hear for a few things, firstly I've decided what Azula's new punishment will be, she'll be banished until she finds the Avatar" the Avatar, but the Avatar hadn't been seen in 100 years

"On the other hand, Prince Zuko, you showed more respect for your country men by not speaking out of term, I'm proud of you my son"

Zuko looked at his father with uncertainty, his father just said he was proud of him, but it felt hollow by what happen with Azula, she had always been their father's favorite child but if he was willing to severally hurt her did he even care for him, was his love worth it if he would hurt one of them like that?

before he could think anymore the doctor came in and said that Azula was awake, he ran out to the throne room to his sister's room, he didn't care what his father thought or what he did,

his sister was awake

he didn't really care about what his sister said, he was just happy she was alright, as he walked out he saw Mai and Ty Lee running towards the door as well, but he stopped them "Zuko let us in" Mai demanded "Please Zuko, she's our friend, she needs us"

Zuko closed his eyes and said "She needs time" Mai and Ty Lee left but not before they glared at him

he just hoped his sister would be alright on her journey to find the Avatar

"Azula you've show great weakness and as such you will be banished until you've returned with the greatest threat to our nation, the Avatar" Ozai said as he sat on the throne looking down at his brother, his son and daughter who looked at him with small tears in her eyes "F-Father, ple" "SILENCE AZULA, get out of my sight"

Azula walked out of the throne room tears now falling from her face

"Azula wait"

Zuko tried to catch up to his sister and almost had a hand on her shoulder when she snapped at him "I DON'T NEED YOUR PITY ZUKO"

as she walked to her room, she overheard some servants whispering "I'm just saying I feel bad for her, I mean she was burned by her own father, in front of the entire courts no less" "Yah I know we're suppose to trust the Firelord, but for someone to burn their own child, it just seems, so cruel"

Azula didn't feel like dealing with them and just went to her room, slammed her door shut, went to her bed and cried, she had lost everything and the only way she can get it back is to find the long lost Avatar

Zuko sat in the garden he played with his mother before she left, he threw pieces of bread for the turtleducks as his uncle came and sat next to him "Something is on your mind Prince Zuko"

"It's just.... Azula has always been my father's favorite child, he always said she was born lucky, and that I was lucky to be born" Zuko stopped to breath "But... now, he just burned and banished her, what would he do to me if that was me?" Iroh placed a hand on his nephew's shoulder "Your sister will be fine Zuko, I'm sure of it"

Azula stood on her ship looking over the sea, she wouldn't be back for a long time, she heard someone stepping onto the ship, odd everyone should be on the ship

she turned to see Ty Lee with two satchels smiling "What are you doing here?"

"I'm coming with you" "I don't need a babysitter" Azula turned away from her friend "How about a friend" Ty Lee handed her bags to one of the crewmen "If your gonna be gone for a while than I plan to be with you all the way" Ty Lee stood next to Azula and put her hands on both her shoulders smiling

Azula watched as the capital city vanished into the horizon and she passed by the great gates of Azulon, her grandfather

her hunt for the Avatar had begun

"Whoa this place is beautiful, imagine what it'd looked like when the nomads were around" Ty Lee and Azula stood in the western air temple, since the Avatar was supposed to be an Airbender it made sense to search the temples first "The only image I care for is the Avatar in chains"

"Azula it's only been 2 weeks since we left, maybe you should take it easy" Azula didn't pay attention to Ty Lee and simply turned to leave "Come on, we'll check the other temples, we won't wait until the Avatar is found"

Azula peeled the bandages off her face to reveal a scar on her face, she placed a finger on her scar closed her eyes and let her finger fall

Azula stood on the bow of her ship, Ty Lee was behind her practicing her acrobatics when it happened

a great blue light shot up in the air

"Finally" Azula had an almost psychotic look in her eyes and a twisted smile on her face

"Ty Lee do you know what this means?" "I won't get to finish my morning routine?" "It means my search it's about to come to an end, that light came from an incredible powerful source it has to be him" "Or it could just be the sun playing tricks, we've been down this road a hundred times Azula, I just don't want you to get all worked up over nothing"

"ENOUGH, helmsman, chart a course for the light" Azula snapped at Ty Lee before commanding her helmsman

Azula and Ty Lee looked through their spyglasses "There he is" Azula said "he's quite nimble for a one-hundred-year-old man" Ty Lee complimented "Yah whatever, what matters is that we've founded him, and his hideout" Azula looked at the small water tribe village

their ship landed at the water tribe village and Azula walked down the ramp to the village with a squad of her men walking behind her, a boy charged at her and she knocked him out of the way

Azula walked to the cowering villagers "Where are you hiding him?" Azula asked them, no one moved

Azula reached for an elderly woman "He should be about this old, master of all four elements" no answer, she shoved the woman who was caught by a younger girl who glared at Azula, Azula threw some blue fire at the villagers to scare them, she started to grow impatient "If you don't turn him over to us right now I'll-"

but before she could finish the boy got back up and was charging behind her back, she turned grabbed his club and threw him to the villagers "Fire then, don't say I didn't warn you" Azula fist burned blue

but before she could do anything she was knocked off her feet by a boy riding a penguin, the children cheered even when they were covered in snow, the boy got off the penguin and looked to the boy and girl "Hey Katara, hey Sokka" the girl Katara waved at Aang while the boy Sokka groaned at him, he then turned to face Azula "Looking for me?"

Him? this boy, was the Avatar?

"Your the airbender?" Azula asked in disbelief "Your the Avatar?" the villagers were in disbelief as well "Aang?" "No way"

so the Avatar's name was Aang huh, no matter, she had come this far to capture the Avatar and reclaim her lost honor

with a second of hesitation she charged at Aang throwing punch and punch trying to knock him, some of her blue fire got close to the villagers but she didn't care, the Avatar clearly did and he looked to them before he blew her away with his airbending and set the terms of surrender "If I go with you, will you promise to leave this place alone?"

Azula nodded and her men cuffed the Avatar's hands and marched him back to the ship the Avatar said some words to the villagers but she didn't notice, she was too wrapped up in her head, she had the Avatar, she was going home, and before the ramp could close she yelled to her crew

"Set a course to the Fire Nation, I'm going home"

Chapter Text

Azula stood next to Aang looking at each other "It took me three years but at long last I have you Avatar and I can go home" Ty Lee and a few firebenders were standing around them looking at the princess "Taken him to the brig and take this" she handed the monks staff to Ty Lee "To my chambers"

Azula went to the helm as Ty Lee walked with the staff in hand and the Avatar was taken below deck

as she stood there she felt happier than she felt in a long time, until the Avatar ran right by her staff in hand "HELLO" he yelled before he ran onto the open deck and attempted to fly away

SHE WAS SO CLOSE!!!

she ran out and jumped, she grabbed onto his leg and shot blue fire into the airbenders kite sheet burning it causing them both to fall onto the deck below, Azula shock it off sooner than the boy and grabbed his throat, she started to strangle him

only to be sent flying off the deck and into the frozen sea, she climbed back up to see the water tribe peasants helping the Avatar onto a sky bison then taking off into the sky, she yelled to her crew "SHOOT THEM DOWN!!"

and they shot fire at the group only for the Avatar to send the fire at the side of an iceberg causing their ship to get half buried in Ice, Ty Lee ran out to the deck, she had put the staff in Azula's room only for the airbender to run in and grab the staff before she had time to react

Lieutenant Jee stood by Azula as Ty Lee came over to Azula who was looking at the fading Sky Bison "good news for the Fire Lord, the Fire Nations greatest enemy is just a kid" "Lieutenant that kid did this, now DIG THIS SHIP OUT AND FOLLOW THEM" Azula was oblivious to the fact that half her crew was frozen in ice by the waterbender

"WHY AREN'T WE MOVING?" "Uh Azul-" "WHAT" Azula snapped at Ty Lee and turn to glare at her, Ty Lee pointed to her firebenders trying to melt their crewmates out of ice "argh, useless to the bitter end" Azula moved to melt the ice herself

she would capture the Avatar even if she would chase him all the way to the North Pole and all the way back to the South Pole

Azula sat in her cabin aboard her damaged ship, they were going to get repairs soon but until then she sat in her cabin and meditated

she had found the Avatar, now all she needed to do was capture him, then she could return home and her father will love her again

'He'll never love you Azula'

oh great she was back, over the span of her nearly 3 years at sea she had started hallucinations of her mother, who abandoned her, who never loved her, who thought she was a monster

"What do you know about, you left me, you think I'm a monster"

'No I love you Azula, and I always will'

tears started falling down Azula's face and she threw a fireball where her mother stood, only to hit nothing

Azula and Ty Lee walked down the ramp onto dry land "Ty Lee I want the repairs done as soon as possible, I don't want to stay too long and lose his trail" "Don't you mean the Av" Azula turned around and grabbed Ty Lee's arm harshly silencing her "DON'T mention his name on these docks, once word gets out that he's alive every firebender in the world will be out looking for him and I don't want anyone getting in my way"

"Getting in the way of what, Princess Azula"

a man walked up to them and Azula turned to see him "Ah Captain Zhao, so good to see someone as skilled as you is here to help us"

"I'm flattered, but it's Commander Zhao now, you're welcome here anytime, what brings you to my harbor?"

"Our ship is in need of repairs" Azula said gesturing to her ship "Now that's quite a bit of damage" “Yes, we crashed right into an iceberg, we'll simply get repairs and leave” Zhao looked at the ship than back at Azula "Of course princess, care to join me for a drink?"

"It would be a prestigious honor" Azula and Ty Lee followed Zhao to his tent

"And by this years end we'll breach the walls of Ba Sing Se, the Fire Nation's victory in this world is inevitable" Zhao stood up facing a map of the world as Azula sat on a chair while Ty Lee looked around the tent "Yes, we will win, and nothing can stop us"

Zhao sat back down next to Azula “So, how is your search for the Avatar going?” while Azula didn't show her slight panic, Ty Lee humbled when Zhao mentioned the Avatar and toppled a weapons rack over "Sorry, my bad"

“We haven’t found them yet,” Azula said

“Do you really expect to?” Zhao sneered. “The Avatar died a hundred years ago, along with the rest of the airbenders, unless of course, you have found some evidence that the Avatar is alive?”

“No. Nothing,” Azula replied

Zhao obviously didn’t buy it, he leaned in closer to Azula who tensed up. “Princess Azula, the Avatar is the only one who can stop the Fire Nation from winning this war, If you have an ounce of true loyalty to your country and father, you’ll tell me what you found.”

Azula held out her palm and created a blue flame. “Careful who you are questioning, Commander,” she said, voice cold as steel. “While my idiot of a brother and my failure of an uncle might be willing to grant you mercy for your disrespect, I, your princess, am not nearly so forgiving” Azula held her flame close to Zhao

Shocked, Zhao instantly took a few steps back from Azula, looking nervous “My apologies, Princess,” he said with a bow “I meant no disrespect to you”

Before Azula could come up with a snappy reply, a soldier came rushing in “Commander Zhao, we interrogated the crew as you instructed, while they didn’t confirm anything, a few men launched their fireballs at us and threatened to drop us into the sea, they’re hiding something”

Zhao smiled "I see, now than what are you hiding Azula?" Azula and Ty Lee looked to each other

after several hours of interrogation Azula and Ty Lee refused to tell Zhao anything, although he did come to the conclusion that the Avatar had returned and he made plans to find the Avatar before Azula did "Don't get cocky Zhao, I will find the Avatar before you"

Zhao rolled his eyes “You can’t compete with me, I have hundreds of war ships under my command, and you, you’re just a banished princess, you have no home, no allies your own father doesn’t even want you”

Azula glared “You don’t know anything”

“If your father wanted you home, he would have let you return by now, Avatar or no Avatar,” Zhao continued “But in his eyes, you are a failure and a disgrace to the Fire Nation. And he’s not wrong.”

Azula glared at Zhao as the torches in the tent burned brighter

Zhao said “You know it's true, you have the scar to prove it”

“Maybe you’d like one to match!” Azula shouted, lunging forwards to get into the commander’s face

Zhao cocked his eyebrows “Is that a challenge?”

“An Agni Kai at sunset” Azula said without fear

“Very well,” Zhao replied, he took a step back, looking smug “It’s a shame your father won’t be here to watch me humiliate you, I guess your friend will have to do” He turned and walked away, leaving a tense silence over his tent

Ty Lee looked to her friend with worry in her eyes “Azula, don't you remember what happened the last time you dueled a master?”

“I will never forget,” she growled

Azula kneeled, a shawl on her shoulders, memories of the last Agni Kai flashed before her eyes

'You can take him dear, you're stronger than him'

Azula looked up to see her mother smiling with pride down at her "I refuse to let him win" Azula whispered before she stood up and faced Zhao, her father's form flashed in front of her, she snapped out of it as the gong rang out, Azula made the first move, blasting fire out at Zhao with her palms. The commander dodged, and Azula continued to launch more attacks, punching and kicking the air to make flames

Finally, Zhao started to push back, pushing Azula’s attacks back with his own fire and advancing on the teen. Azula was pushed further back as he focused on diverting Zhao’s blasts, one slipped through his defenses, and Azula went flying backwards, crashing onto the ground. Zhao jumped towards him, ready to strike

Ty Lee stood, feeling anxious, her stomach felt like it was shrinking in on itself “Come on, Azula” she whispered “You got this”

Azula rolled out of the way before Zhao’s flames could hit her, using the momentum of her kicking feet to stand and swirl around, knocking Zhao’s legs from under him, Ty Lee smiled

The commander scrambled to stand, but Azula focused her attacks on his feet, making it too difficult for Zhao to catch his balance. After two well aimed kicks from Azula, Zhao fell down on the ground, Azula runs forwards to stand over him positioned her hands for the final strike

“Do it!” Zhao roared

Azula looked down at the man, she didn't fully know why she did it, but she moved her hands to the side, scorching the ground next to Zhao’s head “That’s it?” Zhao questioned, looking offended. “Your father raised a coward.”

“Next time you get in my way, I promise I won’t hold back,” Azula replied he turned away from Zhao, walking back to her friend, meanwhile, Zhao pushed himself off the ground and raised his foot for a fiery kick towards Azula's back, Ty Lee jumped to Azula's defense and chi blocked Zhao causing him to fall to the ground

the two girls walked out of the arena "You didn't have to chi block him you know" Azula said "I know, but what kind of friend would I be if I didn't" Azula smiled, at least she had Ty Lee

Azula sat in her cabin trying to meditate, Ty Lee entered hesitantly "Hey... Azula... I've got some bad news"

Azula stood and faced Ty Lee "Ty Lee, whatever you've got to say I can take it" she said sweetly

"Well... We... don't... know where the Avatar is"

Azula looked calm but the lanterns burned brighter and she said grimly "Give me the map"

Ty Lee held the map in her hand and Azula snatched it from Ty Lee's hand as she spoke "There have been small sightings of the Avatar but they've been really random, he must be some kind of master of evasive maneuvering"

Azula had a different answer "Unlikely, he more likely has no idea where he's going" Azula threw the map aside "The only question is... where will he end up next?"

Azula and Ty Lee sat at a table as a crewman walked in with two dishes of fish, Azula wished her father gave her a larger ship, but he insisted not to waste so many resources on her

"Why do you look down Princess, haven't you heard? The Avatar is on Kyoshi?" Azula's mind snapped to what the man said "The Avatar is on Kyoshi Island?" Azula stood up and ordered Ty Lee "Ty Lee ready the Mongoose Lizards, he not escaping me again" Ty Lee stood "Of course Azula but...

"But what?" Azula snapped

Ty Lee pointed at the dishes "Can we eat first?"

Azula groaned, her friend was sometimes insufferable

their ship landed on Kyoshi island, Azula, Ty Lee and a few other soldiers riding Mongoose Lizards scurried out off the ramp "I need the Avatar captured alive, everyone else is expendable" Azula ordered

they rode into he village "it was quiet, too quiet" Ty Lee said nervously only to make a smile "I've always wanted to say that"

suddenly a squad of Kyoshi Warriors jumped out of hiding and took fighting stances, Azula only taunted them "Well well, look at what we have here, it's the Avatar's fangirls"

a few seconds later Ty Lee understood "Oh I get it, good one Azula"

an all out fight broke out, while the soldiers struggled slightly to defeat the warriors, Azula and Ty Lee slowly took them out one by one until all who was left was their leader and the Southern Water Tribe Boy who was dressed in Kyoshi Warrior armor

"Don't you know fans only make the flames hotter?" Azula asked

before anyone could make a move, the Avatar's bison flew down from the sky and set the Fire girls flying into the ocean

Azula and Ty Lee surfaced and watched as the sky bison flew away from Kyoshi Island, Azula growled and immediately swam back to shore with Ty Lee following her close behind

"Azula you've been locked in your cabin for days" Ty lee said standing in the door "Because Ty Lee, I've found out where the Avatar is heading next" Azula pointed to a spot on the map

"The Earth Kingdom City of Omashu"

Ty Lee shrugged "well then we'll just wait for him to leave, I mean Omashu is a nearly impenetrable fortress?"

Azula walked dangerously close to Ty Lee and whispered "That's the point Ty Lee, we're going to sneak in and nab him"

"Remember Prince Zuko, power in firebending comes from the breath not the muscles"

"Yes Uncle" Zuko bowed to his uncle before a hand forced him to turn around "Focus on your training Prince Zuko, it's time you advanced to the next level"

Iroh stood up and walked between his nephew and Master Zwe, the firebending instructor his brother wanted to teach Zuko "No, my nephew is not ready, he still needs to finish the level he's currently on"

"The Fire Lord assigned me to train his son" Iroh glared at Zwe "My brother can decide who can train his son when he starts being a father to him"

Master Zwe left the training arena, Zuko and Iroh sat down for some tea

ever since Azula was banished Ozai had been trying to takeover Zuko's training, but Iroh managed to keep the title of Zuko's firebending master

Ozia was treating Zuko slightly better, but even with that Zuko couldn't shake off what happened to Azula

he could only hope his little sister was okay

(later that evening)

Iroh and Zuko walked to the dining room when a servant walked up to them

"Prince Iroh, Prince Zuko, Fire Lord Ozai has requested you to come to the throne room" the uncle and nephew looked at each other before changing their destination to the throne room

they walked in, the flames were as hot as usual, Ozai's form blocked by the wall of flames "You requested us brother?"

"Yes, I've received news from one of my Commanders in the south, the Avatar has returned"

Zuko smiled, that meant Azula had a chance to come back
