Work Text:

“SOOUUULLLL!”

Black Star tackled the other boy to the ground as Maka side-stepped away from them.

“One of these times you’re going to break his neck, doing that.” Maka grumbled, walking toward Tsubaki and Kidd.

Black Star cackled where he lay on the ground, his arms and legs wrapped completely around a squirming Soul. “Maka, you act more like his wife than his meister.”

She froze and glared over her shoulder. “What?”

“Oh. Black Star, you should run now.” Tsubaki said, flapping her hand.

“HA! Maka could never get me, I’m too fast.” Black Star boasted.

Soul tore Black Star’s arms away from him and rolled away as Maka stalked toward the other boy. “Good luck, bro.”

Black Star glanced at Soul, taking his eyes off Maka. “What?”

“MAKAAAAA CHOP!”

*

After a long afternoon completely failing to learn how to play basketball, Maka sank bonelessly into the couch while Soul made dinner. It smelled so good, and her stomach growled, loudly.

She could see the edge of Soul’s grin from where she sat. He definitely heard that.

Maka watched as he stirred various ingredients into the pot, a buzzing nervousness fluttering behind her ribs. The feeling had started that afternoon, dominating her body and making her movements clumsier than usual.

Soul set the lid on the pot, moving to slice up a loaf of bread, and Maka couldn’t help but remember Black Star’s comments at the basketball court.

Wife.

As if Soul would want to be married to her, Maka sighed internally, dropping her chin to her chest. She wasn’t oblivious, she saw the way some of the other girls looked at him. It always pissed her off because Maka knew none of them wanted him for the right reasons.

Sure, he was beautiful, but he was so much more than that. No one knew Soul the way she did.

Wife. Yeah right.

“I wouldn’t mind.”

Maka’s head jerked up at the quiet words from her partner, wondering if she’d said the self-pitying words out loud. “What?”

“Being married to you. Wouldn’t be any different than the way we are now.” Soul said with a deliberately easy shrug of his shoulder. “You’re my partner.”

The nervousness she’d felt since that afternoon settled as a pleasant warmth flooded her chest. Soul met her eyes over his shoulder and Maka gave him a happy smile.

“Yeah. I wouldn’t mind either.”
