Not a secret (that I love you)

Summary:

While Bakugo is trying to solve the mess he created and trying to save his marriage, Kirishima and Midoriya are pushed in the right direction to do something about their own lives. Will they take the chance that Bakugo set up for them before he ruined his own life?

Notes:

I strongly recommend reading the Secret Husband story before you dive into this one. It won't make much sense until you read the first one. There are numbers of chapters where these scenes should take place within the main story.

Work Text:

CH.1

“Hey, Kirishima!” The redhead stopped in the hall of the Wonder Duo agency after his name was called. He turned around. The familiar mess of green hair appeared in his sight of vision, getting closer to him from the front desk… with papers in his hands.

Great. More work.

After the conversation he had with Bakugo in the locker room, he wasn’t in the mood to talk. Not in the mood for more work either. All he wanted was to go home, relax after this awful day, and maybe figure out where he failed his task of being a best friend.

“Is it urgent?” He asked before the greenhead could even get to him properly. “If not, I’ll do it tomorrow. First thing in the morning, I promise. Just leave it on my table.”

Midoriya looked confused for a second before he realized he was holding a stack of papers in his hands.

“Oh, this? No. No. No. That’s not for you. That’s Kacchan’s work. But with what’s going on with the media… I might as well do it myself.” Izuku sighed. He looked way too calm for someone who just found out that someone he had known for so long was secretly married.

That’s only if he didn’t already know.

“I wanted to let you know that you have a day off tomorrow. That’s all.” Midoriya smiled at him brightly.

“Ehm… No offense, but I don’t think you can decide that. I work under Bakugo.” The redhead hesitated.

“Yes, but all the heroes who worked on that villain today are getting a day off tomorrow. I am on my way to Kacchan, to let him know. He should be the one informing your group but as I said… I think he’s gonna be busy explaining today.”

Yeah, he had to know about the husband. Or be the husband.

“Thank you for letting me know then. See you around.” He turned around, ready to leave.

Katsuki and Izuku. Yeah, they were close. But Eijiro always thought about them as brothers whenever he saw them bickering around. They looked like two brothers who always get on each other’s nerves, just for fun, just because they know that they can.

Now when he thinks about it, old married couples do the same.

“Wait!” Izuku stopped him once again when he already walked out the front door of the agency.

“Yes?”

“Do you have plans for tomorrow?” Izuku looked a little bit nervous about asking.

Did he need something? Maybe he was hoping that Kirishima could spend the day with Bakugo while he took care of the media and the chaos that Bakugo brought into their life. But Kirishima wasn’t sure if he was ready to deal with Bakugo before he figured out where he failed.

“I think I’ll go visit my moms. It’s been a while since I went back home.”

It didn’t even have to be a lie. He could go back home tomorrow to say hi. He probably will.

“Oh, okay. See you later then.” Midoriya’s smile looked hurt for a second, but he was quick to hide it.

Kirishima was sure that Midoriya will be able to deal with his husband on his own…

CH.3

Saturday or not, it didn’t mean much for heroes. They didn’t have weekends, they worked shifts so if they didn’t have a day off, it was a normal workday. Crime doesn’t sleep after all, nor does it care about what day it is.

“Morning!” Some people were cheerful no matter what the day was.

“Hi, Midoriya.” Kirishima didn’t look up from the papers lying on his desk. It was a slow day so far, his patrol didn’t start for the next few hours, so he might as well finish the paperwork from the last few days that he was putting off.

He hated doing paperwork.

When a shadow covered the early morning sun shining on his desk, he looked up to find Midoriya, already in his hero suit and ready for patrol, standing next to his desk. He looked like he was trying to find the right words.

“Can I help you?” Kirishima prompted.

“Is Kacchan okay? He’s been declining all my phone calls since yesterday.”

Right, some people didn’t know what happened last night. The article didn’t come out yet.

“I don’t think he is. He went out yesterday with Shinso for the first time, and long story short, it won’t be just his friends knowing who his husband is in a few hours.”

Kirishima watched as Midoriya’s eyes widened.

“Shit.” He cursed under his breath, catching Kirishima off guard. “But I guess it’s between him and Shinso to figure it out, not like I can help unless they ask me...” The muttering that followed was something more familiar when it came to the greenhead.

Kirishima smiled a little bit. He always found the muttering cute. Even back at UA. He was fascinated watching Midoriya basically spill his thoughts out of his mouth every time he got worried or excited.

“So, he told you about Shinso, hmm?”

Kirishima got out of his memories from UA when the green-haired man sat down on the edge of his desk. Thinking about it, Kirishima realized that he was probably done with his patrol already.

“Oh, yeah. It didn’t go as he wanted. But I am happy for them. I think they are good for each other.”

“Thank God I don’t have to keep this secret alone anymore. It was killing me to be the only one knowing about them. I am not very good with secrets.” Izuku laughed.

“I can’t even imagine keeping a secret for seven years. Both you and Bakugo did an amazing job. If it makes you feel any better, I almost slipped and mentioned the bets we made to Bakugo before he even arrived at the meeting.”

“Wait, what bets? Did you bet who the husband was?”

Kirishima nodded, watching as Midoriya’s eyes widened before he started to laugh again. “How many people bet it was me?”

Now this was the question that Kirishima didn’t want to hear. It was embarrassing that he was the only one thinking that. As bad as he was at keeping secrets, he wasn’t any better at telling lies. So, the truth, no matter how humiliating, needed to be said.

“I was the only one.” He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. He leaned back in his chair, the paperwork left for later. Again. He will finish it one day. Right now, Midoriya’s eyes that looked him up and down in curiosity were much more interesting.

“Really? Why?”

Kirishima could swear that Midoriya’s smirk looked almost identical to Bakugo’s. If he learned one thing from the blond, why it had to be this one?

The thing is Kirishima was never blind. He was aware that the current number one hero was attractive. Kirishima also wasn’t stupid. And he knew that someone as pretty and smart as Midoriya would probably have his own secret partner.

He at least never seemed to be interested in dating.

In moments like this, Kirishima wished he was. He wished he could have a chance. Because he would take it.

“I mean, you are so close.” The statement came out as a whine.

“Yeah, like brothers.” Midoriya rolled his eyes.

“That’s what I said!” Kirishima almost shouted, but after the look that Midoriya shot his way, he clarified. “Well, after I found out you are not husbands. Cause that would be weird.”

“Super weird. I mean, Kacchan is attractive, that’s given fact, every person with good taste can see that. But we’ve been through a lot together. I don’t think I would be able to love him as unconditionally as Hitoshi did back at UA. There were still scars from the past that weren’t healed.”

To some degree, Kirishima understood. He knew about the complicated past the two had before coming to UA. They took a long way to get where they are today. They weren’t at this point seven years ago.

“And it’s not like he was ever my type.” He stood up from the desk, ready to either go do his own paperwork or head back home, Kirishima assumed.

“You have a type?” He laughed because as far as he knew, Midoriya never was with anyone. He never even seemed to be interested in anyone. And Kirishima was confident in saying that he and Midoriya were quite close so he would notice.

But well, there was Bakugo’s seven-year-long secret relationship that he failed to notice…

“Hmm.” Midoriya stopped in the doorway, turned back to face Kirishima, and leaned against the frame. The smirk was back. And his eyes looked dangerous when they locked with Kirishima’s.

“Life was hectic. I knew I couldn’t keep up with everything I was doing while dealing with romantic feelings on top of that, so I pushed it back in my mind. But I had my eyes on someone since the entrance exam to UA. He placed right after Kacchan so I knew he would be a good hero one day. And he proved me right.”

With that he turned around, walking out of Kirishima’s office.

Kirishima just went back to work before a random thought popped up in his mind. Bakugo placed first in the entrance exam. That meant that whoever Midoriya liked, or likes, placed second.

He placed second.

“Midoriya wait!” He ran out of the office, colliding with someone in the corridor. It was the greenhead, standing right behind the corner of the door, giggling. The speed and force that Kirishima ran into him with would be enough to knock over almost anyone. But not the number one hero.

“Me?” He still grabbed onto the waist of the slightly shorter man, to keep him steady. Just in case.

“It took you a while.” And Midoriya’s hands ran up his arms, holding onto Kirishima’s shoulders. “I was dropping hints for years, but you ignored all of them. It got me thinking I had no chance but after Kacchan yelled at me to ‘put my shit together’… here we are.”

“He knew that I and Mina broke up because of you.” Kirishima whispered. The shorted man looked at him confused, maybe with a little bit of guilt. He wanted to pull away, but Kirishima didn’t let him.

“My eyes always wandered for a little bit too long without me realizing. Mina did notice though. And after she called me up on that, I realized it was not fair for her to be with me.”

“I don’t know what to say to that, to be honest.”

“Nothing. It’s fine, it’s in the past.” Kirishima let go of him. Midoriya stepped away, but not too far.

“What if I asked you on a date? Or are those glances also only in the past?”

“I would say…”

Before he could finish his answer, the alarm in the agency started to go off.

“Emergency. Rescue operation. All heroes are needed. Emergency. Rescue operation. All heroes are needed.” An electronic voice started to repeat through the speakers.

Kirishima didn’t even notice when Midoriya took out his pager, looking at the emergency description.

“Let’s go.” He ran down the corridor, pulling Kirishima right after him.

 CH.4

Kirishima was grateful for Bakugo. If it wasn’t for him, maybe he would never get here, sitting in a nice restaurant, enjoying lunch with a really sweet man. The conversation was flowing, the time was passing, and Kirishima knew he was enjoying it.

Midoriya seemed to be enjoying it too.

But at the same time, Kirishima sometimes hated the blond. For example, like right now.

“It’s Shinso.” Midoriya frowned at his phone that was buzzing on the table. “Can I…” the green eyes turned to Kirishima. He knew it was impolite to not pay attention to his date but with everything going on…

“Yeah, of course, pick it up.”

…he wasn’t sure where Shinso and Bakugo stood with each other or with the media at the moment. And if it was Shinso calling, not Bakugo, that meant that it might be dangerous.

“Hello?”

Kirishima watched as Midoriya’s facial expressions changed rapidly while Shinso was talking. The man who was always talking couldn’t even get in one word. After a long time, he nodded. Then realized that Shinso couldn’t see him, so he added his agreement verbally. The phone was put on the table with a sigh.

“I need to go. I am so sorry, Kirishima. But Kacchan…”

“Don’t say anything. I get it.”

“Thank you.” He seemed to be relieved by the understanding. Kirishima offered to pay since Midoriya needed to run somewhere right away.

“I am paying the next one, I promise!” The green-haired man leaned in and surprised Kirishima with a light kiss on his cheek before he ran out of the restaurant. He could feel his cheeks matching the color of his hair, not only from the kiss but also from the mention of a next time…

Maybe Kirishima wasn’t that mad at his best friend.

CH. 5 + 6

“Kirishima Eijiro is my husband.”

Izuku was watching the conference from the other side of the room. It’s not like he was hiding before Katsuki. He just happened to be passing the room where the conference was held when Katsuki said that exact sentence.

He stuck his head in the doorway. Thanks to the chaos in the room, no one even noticed him. Katsuki was too shocked by his own revelation to notice him. Takashi was too busy running to the front to stop Katsuki from making an even bigger mess.

But the chaos already started. The room erupted into a murmur.

And no one even noticed when the number one hero left the building, laughing so hard that tears filled his eyes.

When the call that he was expecting didn’t come, he sent Kirishima a text.

His address and a simple: Come over…

An hour later, the doorbell rang. Izuku went to open the door, wearing sweatpants and some random T-shirt that he found. Of course, it was the redhead standing on the other side of the door. Out of breath, with messy hair and crumpled clothes.

“The married man arrived.” Izuku leaned against the doorway as he crossed his arms, not letting the redhead in immediately.

“You’ve seen it.” Kirishima’s smile fell as soon as it appeared upon seeing the other man.

“I think the whole of Japan saw it.”

“I swear I am not married.” Kirishima protested as Izuku let him inside the apartment. He kicked off his shoes, getting a déjà vu of doing the same just an hour ago in Bakugo’s apartment.

“Kirishima…” Izuku didn’t say anything else, it was enough to get the redhead’s attention on him. The red eyes looked ready to cry. “I was the witness at his wedding.”

With a soft smile playing on his lips, he watched the weight lift off Kirishima’s shoulders as he slumped against the closest wall. He hid his face behind his hands in embarrassment, slowly letting his body slide down the wall with Midoriya’s laughter in the background.

“Oh my god, I am… so stupid.” Kirishima peeked from behind his fingers. There were just so many things happening at the same time, so much information he needed to process in just a few hours. He was so lost in this mess that he completely forgot who he was talking to.

Midoriya crouched next to him, arm wrapping around Kirishima’s shoulders.

“It’s okay. I get it.”

“I just… I wasn’t expecting to be thrown into this so suddenly.”

“Kacchan surely knows how to keep the drama going.” Midoriya rubbed Kirishima’s back as he encouraged him to stand up. “I know I said I’ll pay for the next lunch, but I don’t think it would be smart going out together in public right now sooo…”

Kirishima followed the other deeper into the apartment, walking through the living room and straight into the dining room where the table was set. Steaming food was ready on the table together with candles and wine.

“…I cooked.” Midoriya presented a little bit more shyly than before. Kirishima always admired how his shy personality could come and go depending on the situation. It was adorable.

“I thought I was a married man.” He teased back with a smile.

“I am sure Kacchan will let me borrow you for a while.”

CH.7

Kirishima woke up in the middle of the night. He could feel his head pounding, but that was not something that woke him up. What woke him up was the feeling that he couldn’t breathe.

He didn’t know why. It took him a while to get used to the darkness, ignore the headache in his head, and become aware of his surroundings at the same time.

When he did, he wished he was still sleeping, that everything around him was just a too-realistic nightmare that he would soon wake up from. Because the reason why he couldn’t breathe was the body of his very naked best friend who was lying on top of him, pressing him down with his weight.

“Holy fuck.” He yelped and pushed the blond away. The other man only groaned as he turned around, pulling the sheets closer around himself. He continued sleeping without disruption, obvious to Kirishima’s rising panic.

“Shit, shit, shit, shit…” He got out of bed, and ran into the bathroom, slamming the door behind himself. He didn’t care about his neighborhoods at that moment.

A first glance in the mirror shattered all his hope that maybe it wasn’t as it seemed. He wanted to believe that he just jumped to a conclusion too quickly, but the person staring at him from the mirror was proof, that he was right.

There was no other explanation for the burn marks and scratches on his shoulders. He knew what damage done by Bakugo’s hands looked like. And he knew what it meant.

“No, please, no…” Bile rose up his throat at the thought of what he did. His hands were trembling as he opened the door again.

Bakugo was still there, lying in his bed. Kirishima couldn’t handle it.

He grabbed his clothes from the floor. His phone was still in the pocket of his pants. The room felt too small for him to stay in, it seemed to be airless, and his lungs were burning with the lack of oxygen.

Stumbling through his living room, he opened the balcony door and walked out into the darkness of the night. His fingers automatically dialed a number that became his most called contact recently, and the other person picked up immediately.

“Kirishima?” Midoriya’s voice sounded wide awake. Right, he had night patrol tonight.

“You are at work, sorry.” His voice was shaking. Badly. Even he could hear it.

“Yeah, but it’s fine. It’s a calm night. What… are you okay? You don’t sound good.”

“I… shit. No. I … I fucked up.” The night city before him became just a blur of lights as tears filled his eyes.

“Whoa. Okay, calm down. Are you hurt? You are at home, right? Do you need me to come?”

“I slept with Katsuki.” He whispered, griping the railing of the balcony in his free hand. He was shaking, and it wasn’t caused by the cold April night air. His knees gave out from underneath him, and his knees hit the tiles hard as reality settled in once the words were said aloud.

The phone line stayed silent.

“Midoriya?” He couldn’t breathe. Even with the fresh air around him, his head was spinning. His thoughts were too loud, too chaotic and he knew that he was panicking. He just didn’t know how to stop it.

“Hey, hey, calm down Eijiro, it’s okay.” The voice wasn’t coming from the phone anymore. It was too real.

“Look at me.” The redhead turned his head up to see the number one hero Deku, standing on top of the railing of his balcony. “It’s okay. You need to breathe.” Midoriya jumped down on the floor next to him and pulled him into a hug.

“What have I done?”

Midoriya didn’t say anything once again. He just held the redhead close until he stopped trembling. It took a while before Kirishima could look up and into Izuku’s eyes directly. Their faces were lightened by the little bit of light shining from the living room, and that’s why Eijiro convinced himself that he didn’t see any pain in the emerald eyes.

Instead, Izuku’s eyebrows furrowed when he got a good look at the redhead finally. He gripped his jaw, forcing Kirishima to keep looking him in the eyes as he searched for something in them.

“Were you drinking something at the event?”

“I don’t… I don’t remember. I don’t remember anythi…”

“Eijiro you are drugged.”

“What?”

“Get inside. Come on.” Izuku pushed him back inside the apartment and straight onto the sofa. “It’s gonna be okay. Don’t worry.”

“But Katsuki and I…”

“Eijiro, I know you. Trust me, I know both of you. This is not your mistake. And I need you to believe that because you will have to get it into Katsuki’s head as well in the morning before this ends up in a much bigger disaster.”

Kirishima just stared at him with wide eyes.

“You are loyal and someone who puts morals over anything else. You wouldn’t do this to Katsuki. You wouldn’t do this to me. I know that.”

“I didn’t want to hurt yo…”

His sentence got lost in the feeling of soft lips pressed against his. There was a high chance he won’t even remember it in the morning. Maybe he will. But he knew that Izuku and the kiss had the effect that the green-head hoped for.

Kirishima’s brain shut off. His panic included.

And after a while, they could talk in peace.

CH.9

“You told him?” Izuku looked at Eijiro with a raised eyebrow as Katsuki’s figure disappeared behind the door of the guest room.

“I didn’t need to! He figured it out himself.” The redhead groaned and let his head fall on his crossed arms on the coffee table. He was still sitting on the floor of his living room, the coldness of the room slowly creeping up on him.

“Like if it was hard, right?” Izuku reached for the cup of steaming tea on the table. Katsuki probably wouldn’t come back to drink it, so why let it go to waste?

Kirishima stood up and joined him on the couch, grabbing his own mug of tea to warm himself up.

“Do you think they will solve it?” He leaned against the back of the couch, turning his head to Izuku. “I don’t want to carry the blame on my shoulders if they...”

“You wouldn’t either way. It’s partly Kacchan’s fault, but mostly Hitoshi’s. You don’t even come close to having blame on your shoulders.”

“How can you be sure of that?”

Izuku sighed as he turned his head to Kirishima.

“Because I know things others don’t. I know more about Hitoshi’s work than Kacchan does. Did you know that I have to approve even missions of underground heroes? At least for as long as I am the number one…”

Kirishima’s red eyebrows disappeared behind his bangs. Izuku only nodded. He put the cup with tea back on the table and leaned back on the couch. He moved closer to the redhead, letting his head fall on his shoulder.

“I was debating whether it’s worth it… to pull back for a while. Let Kacchan have my spot for some time, only so he and Hitoshi can talk freely about what’s going on.”

“Katsuki would actually murder you if he found out he didn’t get the place fair and square.” Kirishima chuckled as he wrapped one arm around his shoulders, letting Izuku lean more into him.

“That’s why I didn’t do it.” Izuku laughed, lifting his feet on the couch, as he curled to Kirishima’s side. “I know they will figure it out if they just talk. Even more now, when Hitoshi’s work is out of the way and there won’t be any more secrets between them.”

The redhead stayed silent. There was still something on his mind. Something blurry, that he wasn’t sure he should bring up, but he wanted it. He wanted to ask… so badly.

“And us? Will we figure this out?” He risked it.

Izuku moved his head so they could look at each other, at least a little bit, even when they were too close to see the other properly.

“What is there to figure out?” Izuku’s smile was gentle and sweet.

“You kissed me yesterday.”

“I did.” The smile turned wicked as he glanced at Kirishima’s lips briefly. “You want me to do it again?”

Kirishima grabbed Izuku’s jaw and pulled him into a kiss. One that he will be able to remember without blurry edges from drugs in his blood system. He felt Izuku melt against him, his arms wrapping around the redhead’s neck and tangling in his loose hair.

Before he knew it, Kirishima had a lap full of the current number-one hero, clinging to him as if the kiss was the only cure for a sickness that he’d been dying from. If it was true, then Kirishima’s had been dying his whole life too, because he refused to let go.

Not unless they were both panting heavily, tangled, and lying on the couch.

“Someone told you already that your public image doesn’t match you at all?” Kirishima smirked once his heart calmed down enough. Sweet and innocent… right.

Izuku only laughed, lying on top of him. When at that moment the greenhead smirked, Eijiro knew that everything that happened in his life, was headed toward this moment. To this life.

“Like you are one to talk.”

And he won’t let go of it.
