First Day of School

Summary:

It's a new school year which means Bob has new students to teach and tell them the news.

Work Text:

Groaning and turning off his alarm, Bob slipped on his glasses and looked down to see his wife cuddling him and laying her head on his chest. Chuckling to himself at the sight, he lay there for a few minutes scrolling through his phone until he decided it was time to wake Phoenix up before they got to work late.

“Phe,” Bob woke her up with a kiss and ran his fingers through her hair.

“Five more minutes,” the aviator groaned.

“Come on, we’re going to be late for work,” he told her. “First day of school for the both of us.

Letting out another groan, the two got out of bed and prepared for the day. As Bob dressed in his typical teacher outfit of slacks and a dress shirt, Phoenix struggled to get her pants on.

“Come on, it’s just a button,” Phoenix muttered to herself. “I give up.”

Sighing, she sat on her and Bob’s bed looking up at the ceiling. Walking out of their bathroom, Bob saw his wife lying on their bed with just her undergarments and shirt on. The pants were completely unzipped and unbuttoned.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” Bob sat down next to her.

“I need to get a new uniform,” she told him. “I can barely fit in my shirt and don’t fit in my pants. It’s the same for my civilian clothes. Only baggy shirts and leggings fit me.”

“Okay, that’s fine,” he kissed her forehead. “We can go shopping over the weekend and get some stuff.”

“I feel so fat,” Phoenix sniffled.

“No you’re not,” Bob reassured his wife as he wiped the tears off her face. “You’re growing our child and that’s completely healthy. It’s fine and the doctor says they’re growing at a healthy weight.”

“I need to talk to Mav about putting in a request now,” she sighed. “And I need to get these pants on.”

“I’ll help you come on.” Bob pulled her up from the bed and helped her.

With the help from Bob, Phoenix managed to put her pants on but they were pretty snug around her waist. They soon got their bags and headed out of the house, getting into their car.

“Have a good day okay,” Bob told her as he dropped her off at base. “I love you.”

“Love you too,” Phoenix replied after the kiss.

“And you better be good for Mom,” Bob said as he rubbed his wife’s small bump.

Phoenix let out a chuckle and said goodbye to her husband before going to the locker room. Greeting Halo as they changed, they started to talk about the morning they had. Silently, Phoenix was grateful that her flight suit still fit her. They also talked about the new Top Gun class that was coming in today. After changing, they headed to the recreational room where they usually hung out and waited for their captain to come in.

“Alright, are all of you ready?” Maverick asked.

Everyone nodded their heads and went to the classroom where the newest Top Gun members were.

After dropping Phoenix off at base, Bob drove a few blocks away to the local high school where he taught. Parking in his parking spot, he grabbed his bag and headed to the school’s office to get all of the last-minute materials that he needed. Getting the mail and materials from his box, he greeted some of his coworkers before heading to his classroom.

Unlocking the door, he walked into his classroom which he recently decorated. Placing his bag down, he grabbed his laptop and started to log in and connect it to the projector.

“Hey, Robert,” a co-worker and the head of the science department walked into his classroom.

“Matt,” Bob looked at his laptop and greeted him with a smile. “How are you? How was your summer?”

“I’m good and my summer was pretty good,” Matt replied. “How about you? I just want to give you my congratulations since I heard Phoenix is pregnant.”

“Thank you,” Bob thanked him. “All of our friends and families are pretty excited.”

“I bet,” Matt chuckled and patted him on the shoulder. “Well, I’m just here to catch up before school starts in a few minutes. See you at lunch.”

“See you at lunch,” Bob said before Matt left his classroom.

Finishing up his presentation, he opened his door again so students could walk in and get a seat. When the warning bell rang, a huge group of freshmen walked through his door chatting with each other as they sat down in their seats. With the final bell ringing, Bob started by introducing himself and then taking attendance. After that, Bob presented the presentation he made introducing himself. He had also mentioned to his class that he would be gone in February till mid-March because of the newest family member that will come. He did the same presentation for his next three freshman biology classes until the one AP Biology class he had after lunch and his prep period.

“Mr. Floyd!” Some of his former students entered the room.

“Oh god,” Bob jokingly groaned as he saw them.

“How is Mrs. Floyd?” Adrian, one of the former students, asked.

“She’s good,” he smiled with a big smile.

Soon the final bell rang and Bob did the same routine with attendance.

“Alright, some of you already had me so this presentation is the same but I did make a change in it,” Bob started. “So yes, I’m Mr. Floyd, your AP Biology teacher for the year. I can see some familiar faces here so welcome back. This is my fourth year teaching here, before that I was in the Navy as a weapon systems officer. Yes?”

“What’s a weapons systems officer?” The student asked.

“I’m the person responsible for controlling my pilot’s radio,” Bob explained while changing the slide to pictures of him with the Daggers. “I also control the weapons and manning the systems. A small basic summary of what I do.”

“Why did you leave?” Another student asked.

“Well, technically I’m in the reserves right now so there’s a chance at any time of the year I get called back,” he replied. “Decided to go to the reserves because I always wanted to be a teacher and I fell in love with my pilot.”

Bob changed the slide showing pictures of him and Phoenix. The recently updated picture of them on that slide showed them at their wedding.

“We’ve been married for a little over two years now and,” Bob changed the slide showing the picture of the two of them holding the ultrasound. “We’re expecting our first child.”

“No way!” The group of his previous students exclaimed.

“Yep and everything goes well, I’ll be starting my paternity leave in February and come back mid-March,” he told everyone as he knocked on the wooden block he had. “Just in time for AP test prep.”

Everyone in the class groaned and Bob chuckled and shook his head before going through the syllabus. With the ending bell ringing, Bob packed up his things before signing out and heading to his car to pick his wife up from base and to see his friends.

Parking her jet, Phoenix got out and checked it before heading to the classroom. Throughout the whole day, all of the Daggers were performing hops and new flight maneuvers with the newest Top Gun class. She and some of the Daggers sat in the back of the classroom while Mav talked about the things the students needed to improve on. Soon dismissing the students, the Daggers stayed behind so Maverick could talk to them.

“Oh Bob, how nice of you to join us,” Maverick said halfway through his conversation.

“Maverick,” Bob greeted him as he walked up next to his wife and greeted her with a kiss. “So, how was the first day?”

“Not the worst,” Maverick scratched the back of his neck. “Yours?”

“I got some former students in my AP Biology class and I’m pretty sure I’m bringing home some baby gifts in the next few days,” he chuckled and looked at his wife to see how exhausted she looked. “If it’s fine, can I take Phoenix home?”

“Sure,” Maverick nodded his head. “You two take care of yourselves okay? We’ll see you at dinner on Saturday.”
Saying goodbye to everyone, Phoenix headed to the locker room to get her things before heading home with Bob. Making the ten-minute drive from the base to their house, the two walked into their house and Phoenix took off her flight suit and changed into some more comfortable clothing.

“Exhausted?” Bob lay down next to her in bed.

Phoenix hummed and nodded her head as she let out a yawn.

“Alright, take out for dinner tonight?” Bob suggested. “We’re both tired from our days.”

Nodding her head, Phoenix pulled out her phone so the two could decide what to eat.
