Work Text:
Mordecai sighed deeply from the backseat, eyes locked on the bullet-riddled car rattling away in front of him. He could barely make out the three figures inside of it as the car sped away over a hill, taking all of the alcohol with them.
What a waste of time.
“Let’s not prolong this. This…” Mordecai said as he adjusted his golden spectacles higher on his nose, “is a trifling matter. We have other business to attend to.”
“Yeah. But none of it near as fun as this gon’ be” Nicodeme snickered from the front seat, turning to look over as Seraphine.
“Mm!” she sneered haughtily, “Can’t let the competition go unchecked. Even a little vermin, they got a way of… festering.”
She raised her claw, pointing in the direction that the other car had gone. “Allons!”
Mordecai’s ears flicked slightly with disdain; he could tell that this was going to be a long night. Why couldn’t these upstarts just give up? It wasn’t as if anyone could compete with their business.
But, in the end, it was better to crush the competition than give them a chance to start up again.
Mordecai fixed his indifferent green gaze out the windshield, rolling his eyes as the other red car started speeding away once again. It wasn’t as if they had anywhere to go.
Seraphine hastily angled herself out of the window, firing a steady stream of bullets into the back of their car; the bullets punched holes in the worn leather chest full of alcohol bottles, and shattered through their back windshield with a resounding crunch. All three figures inside made various exclamations of distress, and turned to look back at Mordecai’s vehicle.
From Mordecai’s position in the backseat, he could make out the faces of the three figures hiding in the other car: there was a short, fluffy orange male cat; a small, thin, dark-gray female cat; and a surprisingly handsome light-brown male cat, with piercing blue eyes.
Hm, Mordecai thought, training his gaze on the blue-eyed cat. Maybe this night wouldn’t be such a waste after all.
The blue-eyed cat quickly stuck himself out of their car’s back windshield, slamming his paws on top of the leather trunk to keep it shut. Unfortunately for him, Nicodeme chose that moment to rev their vehicle into the back of the bullet-riddled car, effectively throwing the blue-eyed cat out the back window.
Mordecai frowned from the backseat. It seemed his fun was about to be over before it even began.
Somehow, the blue-eyed cat managed to dig his claws into the worn-out leather trunk; he scrambled for purchase, trying to save himself from tumbling to the ground.
“What the-” Serafine scoffed as she took in the sight, with Nicodeme laughing alongside her.
“I guess this one is the bait,” Nicodeme snickered as he moved to rev the car again.
Mordecai could barely make out the blue-eyed cat shrieking “Stay with me!” as alcohol began spewing out of various bullet holes in the trunk.
He even has a pleasing voice, Mordecai mused to himself. A pity he likely won’t be alive much longer.
The blue-eyed cat dug his heels into the metal fixtures of the car, saving himself from being crushed against the ground. However, this maneuver had unfortunately left him facing outwards towards Mordecai’s vehicle. Mordecai tilted his head slightly to the side, curiosity momentarily cracking through his emotionless facade. He was curious as to how the blue-eyed cat —whose name likely began with an R if his embroidered tie was any indicator— would escape being crushed between the two vehicles.
However, once Mordecai’s car was almost close enough to brush against the blue-eyed cat, his orange-coloured friend leaned out of the back windshield and unleashed a storm of bullets, causing Nicodeme to let up on the car’s speed. The bullets cracked through the front windshield of Mordecai’s car, spraying shards of glass everywhere.
Nicodeme and Seraphine ducked their heads to escape the onslaught of bullets, but Mordecai merely fixed his intense acid-green gaze on the blue-eyed cat, unworried about the possibility of being shot whilst in the backseat. Mordecai watched in interest as the cat removed his embroidered tie to secure the alcohol trunk’s broken lock.
Clever, Mordecai thought, slightly raising one of his eyebrows. The other cat really was quite… charming.
Suddenly, the blue-eyed cat locked eyes with Mordecai, and Mordecai’s brain seemed to forget how to function. He could feel his emotionless facade melting off his face. They both gazed at each other, and time seemed to slow. There was a tangible tension in the air, a raw electricity connecting them.
Suddenly, the orange cat redirected his rapid stream of bullets, causing Mordecai and the blue-eyed cat to break eye contact. Shaking his head slightly, Mordecai sunk back into his indifferent mask, not letting it show how much that small interaction had affected him.
Mordecai felt the car rocking underneath him as Nicodeme and Serafine regained their upright posture. Serafine roared with laughter as Nicodeme coughed, raising one hand off the steering wheel.
“I think I swallowed a bug,” he said, fixing his gaze on his unoccupied hand.
“You got a big, fat bebette for dinner? No fair” Serafine smirked, grinning over at Nicodeme.
Nicodeme coughed once more and spit into his palm. “Nah,” he chuckled, revealing a thin shard from the windshield in his hand. “Just more glass.”
Nicodeme and Serafine began howling with laughter. Mordecai’s ears flicked with distaste as he listened to the meaningless chatter of his accomplices; why was it so hard to find competent workers these days?
“Profoundly unprofessional,” Mordecai scoffed, fixing his cold, indifferent gaze on Serafine and Nicodeme.
They both turned in their seats to look back at Mordecai, slight grins decorating their faces.
“Well,” Nicodeme smirked, “They got more firepower than I expected.” He turned once again to face the front of the car. “But you want to take over drivin’ back there?”
Mordecai eyebrows angled downwards, and his eyes slanted into an icy glare.
“No,” he stated, slightly raising his shoulders. “Especially now that you have alleviated us of our windshield.”
“Aw,” Serafine purred, “You don’t like how we play? How about you stop spectatin’ and throw in, cher?”
Mordecai slowly reached beneath the left side of his suit jacket and withdrew his gleaming silver pistol, angling it so that Serafine could see its shine. Once again, Mordecai angled his gaze out the windshield to focus on the blue-eyed cat.
“You two deal with the others. The blue-eyed one is mine.”
“Roger that,” Serafine sneered, grinning over at Nicodeme. “We’ll have ourselves some fun!”
Nicodeme revved the car once again, gaining on the other bullet-riddled vehicle. Mordecai’s curiosity once again led him to focus on his blue-eyed cat, who was busy pulling his orange, gun-wielding friend back inside of their vehicle from where he was leaning out the back windshield.
All of a sudden, Mordecai could make out his blue-eyed cat yelling at the small female cat who was driving their car.
“Brakes!”
Mordecai smirked softly to himself.
Clever.
Because of the blue-eyed cat’s words, the bullet-riddled car slowed suddenly, causing Nicodeme to swerve violently around; Mordecai’s car ended up perfectly in line with the other vehicle’s side doors.
The orange-furred cat angled his gun out, firing rapidly at Mordecai's side windows. Bullets crashed through, causing Mordecai, Serafine, and Nicodeme to duck rapidly to avoid the onslaught of assorted projectiles.
Mordecai suddenly felt the car jerk beneath his feet. Shit. The orange cat had blown out one of their tires, causing the vehicle to careen off the road into a ditch. Mordecai watched in frustration as the other car sped past, carrying away not only the prized alcohol but his newfound blue-eyed cat.
Well, Mordecai thought to himself as a frustrated scowl began to form on his face. That simply wouldn’t do.
Rapidly throwing open his passenger side-door, Mordecai quickly exited the vehicle and strolled out to the middle of the road. He raised his shimmering silver gun into the air before angling it towards the bullet-riddled vehicle currently making its rapid getaway.
Narrowing his eyes, he focused carefully on the car, attempting to take out the driver. Time seemed to slow down to the second, an invisible clock counting the ticks as his finger slid over the trigger, getting ready to fire.
As he unleashed his shot, the car swerved suddenly, causing the bullet to tear through the side mirror of the car. The bullet-riddled vehicle made a hard left, wobbling rapidly off in the direction of the old Sable Stone and Quarry yard. Mordecai’s eyebrow quirked upwards in confusion and he tilted his head slightly to the side.
Well then.
That turn of events had been… unexpected.
But no matter. Mordecai quickly strode back towards his car before getting into the backseat. They would easily catch up to the other car now.
And, Mordecai thought, To his blue-eyed darling.
