Work Text:
“I want to love you. Stars above, I want to love you, so. Much. But as much as it hurts to stay apart, it hurts far more to know that my love for you would never be enough. I… I could never make you happy, not truly. And all I want, more than anything in this life, more than loving you, is for you to be happy. For you to be content with your life, to never wish for more, to feel loved in the way that you deserve. And I know my love for you cannot do that.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I do. My love for my– for the people who found me, it didn’t change the fact that I wasn’t human. My love for them didn’t change the fact that they had to leave just to be happy again. It didn’t stop others from hating those I was close with, it didn’t stop them from hurting them, my love has done nothing for the ones I care most about. Nothing except hurt them until they made the smart choice and left me behind, or… or died simply for staying by my side.”
“Neuvillette…”
“Please… find someone else. Anyone else. I can’t bear the thought of you suffering because of me.”
“If I don’t want anyone else?”
“Then learn to stop waiting for my love. I cannot in good conscience give it to you. Not when you deserve so much better.”
