Date Night Done Right

Summary:

When Dick has to cancel a date with Wally to look after Jason, who's managed to break his arm on patrol, Wally offers to come hang out in the manor with them both instead.
It ends up being one of their best dates yet.

Notes:

Written for BirdFlash Week Day 5 - Meeting the Family.

Work Text:

Wally was about to speed over to pick up Dick for their date when his boyfriend gave him a call.

“Hi, Dick! You almost ready? I have been dying to try that new pizza place!”

“I’m gonna have to cancel, Walls. I’m so sorry.”

“Oh… okay. Is everything alright? You don’t usually cancel last minute.”

“Remember how Bruce picked up that new kid? Jason?”

“The new Robin? Yeah, what about him?”

“Well, Bruce has this stupid meeting in Metropolis, Alfred’s in Britain for some family thing and Jason’s not supposed to be on his own right now because he broke his arm on patrol last week and he can’t do anything for himself.”

“That sounds like a recipe for a very grumpy Robin,” Wally said, attempting to lighten the mood. “And a very stressed Nightwing…”

Dick groaned. “You don’t know the half of it, Walls. This kid hates me.”

“I didn’t think it was possible for anyone to hate you,” Wally said, mostly because he couldn’t resist an opportunity to flirt with his boyfriend.

“Yeah, ‘cuz I’m such a delight,” Dick scoffed. “Can we reschedule for next weekend?”

“We could still spend time together,” Wally offered. “I’ll come over and help you out with Jason, if you want.”

The line went quiet for a moment, before Dick asked, “You’d do that for me?”

“Sure! I mean, I’m not terrible with kids. Most of ‘em like the Flash enough, too. I’ve not got that Nightwing charm but I do my best.”

Wally could imagine the way that Dick’s eyebrows were crinkling in amusement. “What did I do to deserve you?”

“Be born?”

Dick snorted with laughter. “Alright, alright. I’ll see you at the manor in five? I’ve got to go check that Jason isn’t trying to make himself lunch one-handed or something.”

As Wally grabbed the last of the stuff he might need from around his place, he heard a crash on the other end of the line that sounded suspiciously like a plate smashing, followed by a young voice snapping Fuck off, Dickface! I can do it myself!

This was going to be a very interesting date.

By the time that Wally zipped onto the Manor grounds, Dick was well and truly at the end of his tether. He had only been at the manor for three hours and he and Jason had already gotten into six arguments, mostly about Dick trying to do things for Jason.

Since he couldn’t do it for himself.

Since he had a broken arm.

When Bruce warned him about Jason’s stubbornness, Dick had thought he was exaggerating. If anything, he was underplaying it! Jason refused to accept any help at all, and every time Dick tried to do anything for him, it ended in a shouting match.

Safe to say, when Wally zipped into the kitchen, Dick was indescribably relieved to see a familiar face.

“Where’s the kid?” Wally asked.

“Eating lunch in the dining room,” replied Dick. “I made him a sandwich, which he is now eating… begrudgingly.”

“Have you eaten anything today?” asked Wally.

Dick hesitated. “Aw, shit. I was going to, but I completely forgot.”

“Want me to speed-make you a sandwich?”

Dick fished out a handful of cash. “Do me one better and get us a pizza from that place you were talking about.”

Wally grinned. “You got it, Boss! Pepperoni, right?”

“Yeah, good job remembering.”

“It's easy to remember stuff when it's you.”

Wally waited just a second before zipping away, solely so he could see Dick’s cheeks turn pink at the comment.

The pizza was amazing, of course, and Wally even managed to convince Jason to try a slice by telling him that he accidentally ordered a large, and that there was simply too much pizza for just him and Dick to eat it.

Wally had to hide a smile when Jason sat down with them and muttered, “Well, if neither of you guys are gonna eat it…”

After lunch was done, Wally and Dick settled down in the movie room to watch something. Wally noticed Jason lingering in the doorway and said, “Do you want to watch something with us?”

“No!” Jason snapped. “Shut up!”

Neither Dick nor Wally were fooled by Jason’s tough-guy act.

Seconds later, Jason mumbled, “I mean, it depends what you’re gonna watch.”

“How does the Princess Bride sound?”

Classic Dick, choosing Jason’s favourite movie and acting like he was the one who wanted to watch it. It was kinda sweet, honestly. Dick was gonna be a really good dad someday…

Wow, okay, that thought came out of nowhere. They were both way too young to be thinking about that!

Still a nice thought, though…

Jason sat down on the other end of the couch, a decent distance away from Wally and Dick, which made sense, considering what Wally knew about the kid. Jason was very guarded; Bruce and Alfred were the only adults he really trusted, so it made sense that he’d be cautious around Dick and his new boyfriend.

Might as well set a good example for the kid, right? Giving trust wasn’t always easy, but if Wally learned to do it, Jason could too.

Wally rested his head against Dick’s shoulder as the movie started, and Dick instinctually put an arm around him. It was nice to feel so secure with someone else. Wally really hoped Jason got there eventually.

By the end of the movie, Jason was dozing off. Dick gave him a little nudge on the shoulder. “I think you should head upstairs. You’ll be comfier in bed.”

“Uhhh… okay?” Jason yawned. “I’m not that sleepy, though.”

“Maybe I want some alone time with my boyfriend,” Dick said with a suggestive waggle of his eyebrows.

Jason groaned. “Don’t be gross! I’ll tell Bruce that you’re being gross.”

“Do you want to go to bed or not?” Dick asked. “I can carry you if that would help.”

Issued with that final ultimatum, Jason mumbled, “Yeah, alright, but you don’t gotta carry me or nothing. I’m not a baby.”

Dick held his hands out in mock surrender. “Alright, alright. See you in a bit, kid.”

“Yeah, night. Seriously, though, don’t do anything gross.”

“No promises,” Wally said, grinning.

Jason threw a pillow at his head and missed, since it was sorta hard to hit a speedster with a projectile, making Wally double over with laughter as Jason left the room.

A pretty successful date, all things considered. Wally wouldn’t have changed it for the world.
