Work Text:
“This is the story of a man named Stanley.”
Stanley tuned out the rest of that spiel and took some time to think to himself. He was quite bored today. He didn’t have much to do since he’d already completed most of the endings at least once, not including the bad ones of course. He began thinking about what he hadn’t done. Hm. Well he already had the test achievement and he’d done door 430 as well. He didn’t even want to consider doing the skip button ending or the zending again. Stanley stepped out of the room.
“All of his coworkers were gone. What could this mean?”
While walking to the two doors, he decided that he would try to pester the Narrator to see if he had something new to say.
“When Stanley came to a set of two open doors, he entered the door on his left.”
He started walking through the path that Narrator had set up for him and eventually approached the broom closet. He had never stayed in the broom closet for very long, since he knew that Narrator never had much to say. However, Stanley noticed that Narrator had some different dialogue upon opening the door.
“Oh no. Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, not again,” The Narrator rejected, “I won’t be a part of this. I’m not going to encourage you. I’m not going to say anything at all. I’m just going to be patient and wait for you to finish whatever it is you enjoy doing so much in this room. Please, take your time”
So Stanley had walked into the broom closet and decided he was just going to sit there. In complete silence. Not that he could talk anyways. Although Narrator had stated that he wouldn’t say a word, Stanley knew he’d break eventually. Whether it be a forced reset or new dialogue, he didn’t care. All he wanted was something new.
A few hours had passed and Stanley was getting impatient. There wasn’t much to do and Narrator still hadn’t said a word. He could occasionally hear Narrator walk away or shuffle some papers but he still hadn’t said any or reset the game yet.
“Stanley,” The sound of his voice made Stanley jump. “Are you going to leave? or am I going to have to pry you out of there myself.”
Stanley didn’t respond. He knew that Narrator couldn’t go down there. It was probably just another of his empty threats.
Right as Stanley was about to walk out the door, He heard footsteps, closer than usual. Stanley moved to the farthest corner of the broom closet. The door creaked open and it revealed another person. He appeared slightly older than Stanley. He had a few grey hairs, presumably from stress, and some yellow highlights as well. He was wearing a black suit with yellow accents referencing the adventure line (tm). Stanley sat there idly in shock.
The man insultingly questioned, “What are you so surprised for?”
Stanley immediately recognized the Narrator’s voice. When he thought something new would happen, this was not what he was expecting at all. So, this was what the Narrator looked like. This was exciting, Stanley would have hugged him had it not been the Narrator. After collecting himself, Stanley looked up at the Narrator again and remarked, “Nice to see you too, Narrator.”
The Narrator sighed, “So, are you going to get on with the story or do I have to hold your hand and drag you around the office myself.”
To be quite honest, Stanley wouldn’t mind holding the Narrator’s hand, since he hadn’t felt any sort of physical contact in ages. The Narrator pulled him up, and they started walking to the boss’ office. Stanley felt the warmth of Narrator’s hand grasping his. He heard the noticeably cheerier tone of the Narrator’s voice. For a moment, Stanley was happy. That is, until the game reset.
