Summary
While geologists predicted the result of a massive volcanic event, it was all hypothetical. There were papers published on the topic with no intention of any of it becoming reality. “There’s no way this could happen, at least in our lifetimes,” they all said, closing the case and moving on with more important research.
Then again, no one could ever fathom such a massive tectonic movement such as the one that ended the world nearly eight years ago, no matter how much research was conducted. The chances of it happening at all were so impossibly slim, and yet it still happened.
And Wilbur, just like everyone else, wished that he wasn’t of the generation that had lived to see it.
Tough times have fallen upon the Soot-Nevadas family since the volcanic apocalypse started: It’s wintertime, and Wilbur is the sole scavenger after Quackity sustains a severe leg injury, rendering him disabled. When Wilbur returns home from his first outing of the season, Quackity expresses some feelings whose confession is long overdue.
