Work Text:
He’s seen the board at the post office, with all the names and the lights. He knows that Mumbo’s board says WIP on it. That means that a location’s been picked out, and the postbox should be installed soon. (He knows all of this because he kept bugging Pearl for updates on Mumbo’s postbox until she told him what the board meant.)
But soon isn’t soon enough. Grian wants to send Mumbo mail NOW.
They’ve sent each other mail before, on a slightly more rudimentary system back in season 7. Linked up their hobbit holes with a chest minecart that could go back and forth. Sending Mumbo messages is a hobby of Grian’s. And now that his fishing hobby has lost its obsessive nature (by winning its hunt for a Mending book), he wants to bring back an old one: filling up Mumbo’s mailbox.
Once it’s installed. That part is important.
The redstone had still been warming up in Grian’s new postbox while he was at the post office, buying a batch of Mumbo stamps. (The office should have a permit to sell these, but he’s not going to snitch to the DHP, not today.) He’d dashed home, placed a potato in the shulker, put the stamp in the dropper, and pushed the button.
He’d been met at the post office (on his journey to buy more stamps) with a baffled Postmaster Pearl, telling him that Mumbo didn't have a box yet, and there was no end point for lost parcels. They just…run off the end of the track and disappear eventually. And something had gone wonky with this parcel anyways - the minecart chest had only the stamp in it, not the shulker OR the potato!
Grian reasons that, if Mumbo’s box is going to be in the next wave, surely some of the bits are already in place. He’s poked his head into the system in the Nether once or twice - there’s so much there!
So he should be able to send Mumbo a package, and have it wait in the system until the box gets installed, and then be instantly delivered to him! It makes sense to Grian! Why didn’t Etho and Tango make it that way, instead of having lost parcels just sit in a hole in the Nether? Seems like a flaw in their redstone. He sent that potato perfectly properly!
He sends another parcel to show Pearl he knows how to do it. It’s an egg, to Mumbo, once again. She sighs and retrieves it (successfully this time), and promises that Mumbo’s box is at the top of the list, if he would please stop trying to break the postal system. Which he’s not!
Not trying to, anyways. He’s just trying to send mail to Mumbo. They knew this was coming.
Grian knows Mumbo is taking care of things. Seemed like he was a bit embarrassed by being voted second-slash-third weirdest in terms of “personalized setups” among the Hermits, and is taking steps to rectify the situation. With safety cables strapped to his fingers. It’ll probably take his hand some time to get used to, and that is time he’s not spending on the server.
Grian is happy that Mumbo is pacing himself, and taking shorter breaks. It’ll keep him from needing to take a long break like what happened last time, and that was. Well, there was a reason Grian kept trying to summon him and threw him a surprise party when he came back. He can wait, as long as Mumbo needs.
Doesn’t mean he’ll be patient about it.
In the meantime, Grian does need something to do with all the Mumbo stamps. Not like he has to worry about running out, since he can and will just go buy more. And everyone loves looking at a Mumbo stamp!
So he sends GeminiTay an offer of end-busting, written on the back of the stamp. It does make a lovely letterhead - especially the head on it. A touch of personality!
She writes back on just normal paper. Grian’s happy she wants to go End busting, but a little sad she didn’t seem to get the memo about using Mumbo stamps. So he sends her another message, with two of them this time.
And Gem does send one back on a Mumbo stamp! A trend is starting! Grian likes this. He can keep doing this. He has plenty of Mumbo stamps to share. He will be the Champion of Mumbo Stamps.
The Stampion.
Grian can see it now. By the time Mumbo logs onto the server, everyone will be writing all their short letters on Mumbo stamps. His face will be everywhere, saying all manner of things, without him even knowing.
Par for the course for Mumbo, really. Just like old times.
