Work Text:

Waking up at a reasonable time, other than when they get up for work, Phoenix and Bob got out of bed and got ready for the day. The soon-to-be parents were excited since today is the day where they find out the gender of their baby. They’re not finding out at the appointment but are planning a photo shoot with the photographer who did their engagement photos. After the appointment, they go to a local bakery and have one of the bakers do a gender reveal cake where they’re cutting into it. They also were coming into work late because of it so that meant their friends and coworkers bugging them if they know the gender yet.

After finishing the initial checkup, Bob and Phoenix waited for her doctor to come in to find the gender of their baby.

“They are kicking up for a storm,” Phoenix chuckled as the baby kicked.

“They’re probably excited for us to see them again,” Bob chuckled as he gently touched Phoenix’s bump.

“Sorry for being late,” Phoenix’s doctor entered the room.

“It’s fine,” they reassured her.

“So, are you ready to find the gender of your baby?” She asked.

“Actually, can you write it down?” Phoenix asked. “We’re planning on doing a gender reveal with friends and family.”

“Sure, it’s no problem,” she replied. “Now, let’s check in on this baby.”

Phoenix had gotten used to how cold the gel was so she wasn’t phased when it was placed on her bump. The new parents looked at the screen as the doctor moved the wand around. Smiles beamed as they saw their baby pop on the screen as their heartbeat played.

“Well, the baby is all healthy and growing at the rate they should be,” Phoenix’s doctor handed her the envelope with the ultrasounds. “You’re going to stop flying soon right?

“Yep, next week but I started desk work this week,” Phoenix answered. “I only fly when needed.”

“That’s good but still take it easy when you fly,” her doctor said.

Nodding their heads in understanding, they thanked the doctor before leaving the office. Dropping off Phoenix at the base, Bob started his way to the high school. Looking through his mailbox and greeting his coworkers, he made it to his classroom where thankfully it was his prep period.

“Dang it, I thought we had a sub today,” Sam, who Bob had in his class before, said as she walked into the classroom.

“You got our hopes up Mr. Floyd,” Adrian pouted as he sat in his seat.

“Sorry you two,” Bob chuckled at their reactions. “I joined my wife’s doctor’s appointment.”

“Oh, are she and the baby alright?” Sam asked.

“Yeah, they’re both alright and healthy,” Bob smiled as he wrote some notes on the whiteboard. “Alright, let’s get started.”

*Sunday*

After picking up the cake from the bakery, Bob drove to the location their photographer sent. The two were pretty excited to find out the gender finally. They already know that the main priority is for the baby to be healthy but it is fun to find out what they are having.

“Bob, Natasha,” their photographer greeted them.

“You picked a great location,” Phoenix complimented the venue.

It was up in the hills surrounded by a plethora of flowers. You could see the beaches off in the distance. Also, there were barely any people so it allowed them to be more comfortable taking photos.

“Thank you, so are you ready?” The photographer asked.

Nodding their heads, Bob placed down the cake stand before taking the cake out of the box. They sat down on the picnic blanket they brought and started to take some photos before cutting into the cake.

“Ready for this?” Phoenix asked as they grabbed the wine glasses, looking away from the camera and cake

“Ready,” Bob confirmed.

The couple covered each other’s eyes as they cut into the cake using their wine glasses. The camera clicked as the wine glass was filled with cake. Telling the couple that they could open their eyes, Bob and Phoenix looked at their glasses and their eyes widened. Tears immediately started forming once they found out. Sharing a kiss, they took some more photos before they thanked their photographer and headed back home.

While on their way back home, they called their parents and family who didn’t live in San Diego or California the news.

*Wednesday*

After finding out the gender, Bob and Phoenix decided to host a dinner with their squadron and father figures, along with Penny and Amelia. It was also to celebrate Phoenix’s last day of flying. Once work was done, Bob picked up Phoenix and they headed home to get started on dinner. Thankfully they already premade some dishes the day before and all they had to worry about was cooking the meat. They also asked Bob’s coworker, the culinary teacher at the high school who had her side business baking treats, to make some cake pops, one of them was the gender.

“I see that our first guests have arrived,” Phoenix chuckled as they saw Ice and Maverick walk into their backyard.

“Bob, Phoenix,” the couple greeted them as they walked into the kitchen.

“It smells good,” Maverick inhaled the small that engulfed the kitchen. “How is our grandchild?”

“They’re good,” Phoenix replied as she rubbed her bump. “Probably happy that I’m not flying anymore.”

“So, do you know the gender?” Ice asked them.

“Yeah, we do,” Bob and Phoenix smiled at each other.

“So, boy or girl?” Maverick asked.

“Well, they are a perfectly healthy baby,” Bob replied which caused Maverick to pout.

“Don’t worry, you’ll find out soon,” Phoenix reassured them.

Soon more people came bringing food or drinks. Bringing the food out and placing it on the table in the backyard, everyone filled up their plates before sitting down.

“So, thank you everyone for coming,” Phoenix said.

“We are here to celebrate Phoenix’s last day of flying but also to find out Baby Floyd’s gender,” Bob added, making everyone cheer. “But at dessert.”

“Or we can just skip to dessert?” Mickey suggested.

“No,” Phoenix shot down the wizzo’s idea. “Now enjoy the food and have fun.”

Everyone dug into the food and started to talk to each other. Since Bob wasn’t active in the military anymore, he enjoyed listening to the stories that everyone was talking about. Yes, it did make him miss training with his squadron, but he knew he made the right decision when he joined the reserves. He also brought up the idea to Ice and Mav about his AP Biology class on a field trip to see what career pathways his students could do in the future. The base had a lab that Bob frequented occasionally if they needed his help. With that type of trip, Bob needed many people’s permission from the district and base. With Ice being COMPACFLT, Bob does have the leverage of getting the approval quicker but he still has to talk to the base commander about this trip. He was also planning on taking the students a week after AP testing ends for all subjects so it gives them time to relax before finals start.

Hearing a text notification on his phone, he saw that his coworker was at the front of the house so Bob excused himself from the table.

“Thank you so much,” Bob thanked his co-worker and friend.

“It’s no problem,” she replied with a smile. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“See you tomorrow,” Bob nodded and took the box from her.

Walking back into the backyard, he saw that everyone was almost with their dinner. Placing the box on the table, Phoenix and Bob handed everyone a cake pop and told them not to eat it yet.

“Alright, take a bite!” They announced.

Everyone around the backyard took a bite out of the cake pop. Everyone was confused as to why theirs didn’t have any color inside until Harvard bit into his.

“It’s a girl!” He shouted as he saw the pink.

“A girl!” Everyone celebrated.

The couple was given hugs and congratulations from their friends and family. As their friends and family celebrated, Bob and Phoenix looked at them knowing that their daughter was going to have the most supportive family.
